285’s on a 2016 4Runner Trail - Fender Liner Mod

Just did something similar to this the other day on mine. Went with 285/70/17 ko2s with a 3" lift and had bad rubbing in reverse after my alignment. All I did was remove the two bolts, pull the liner in and drill new holes and boom, all rubbing was gone. Thankfully I didn't have to cut anything.

Are you running spacers though?

Now I've noticed you are all over Instagram/youtube etc with your trips, and you seem to be pretty active. Any regrets on going with the 285 and that digging into your MPG with all your driving? I do minimum 70 miles per day and that is conservative.

Thanks and loving the vlogs

Haha. Thanks!!!

We HAVE been pretty active - been trying to do a trip a month and have been blessed to do more from time to time!!

I have no regrets. And of some of the additional research I've done, I keep feeling the size being reiterated as a pretty much ideal size. I know Ronny Dahl and the 4xoverland guy like this size (and the Ko2's) and everything has worked out well for us.

I'm not sure the mileage would be any better with a slightly smaller size. The AT's are a much beefier tire than street tires.

I wouldn't change a thing.

Question for OP, do you remember what your castor was after the alignment? I just lifted mine with the same wheels, spacers and 285's. I'm not quite rubbing on the front bumper yet but I am hitting the body mounts pretty bad if I turn the steering wheel passed one full turn. My castor is 3.3 and 3.5 with Total Chaos uppers. Alignment guy is trying to figure out how to get more castor to pull me away from the body mounts, but I'm afraid a BMC is in my future.

Thanks for this write up!

Yes please add it. I was searching for just this info today. I have a set of 8.5wheels in 265/70/17 BFGs K02s that rub slightly on front drivers side only. I have pushed back liner with heat gun, made huge improvement, no have a minor rub on section still. Will move liner forward and that should cure it.

GREAT THREAD! Thanks :frog:

I have no idea. I had done the research when I'd done this and knew the reasonable settings, readout, output, result - whatever it's called when they do the alignment - and mine wasn't perfect but it was close enough. I took it for a drive and it drove fine. I know that it was just outside what it was supposed to be but they said that was as good as they could get it without rubbing more.

I'm subscribing to this thread as I plan to order 285 BFGs in the near future, stock suspension as well. I know it can be done with trimming, and now I have a detail writeup for that. Thank you! JasonKoko

I have 275's with stock trail rims. no rubbing at stock height, no rubbing with the 2.5" lift. As soon as I put the spacers on, i had to to move the fender liner and trim the bumper as well.

I recently installed a set of 275 K02's on SCS Ray 10 Wheels (17 X 8.5 BS:4.30" et-10mm) with a stock lift. I removed the mudflups in the front and they still rub significantly in reverse at maybe 60% lock.

Is there a way to push the fender liner back?

I'm going to be lifting the truck, but I also plan on adding 1.25" spacers.

You should probably try reading thru this entire thread. You will find your remedy. It's a very simple fix.

Lifting will not help that much with the rubbing, and wheels spacers will make it worse.

You will definitely need to do the fender liner mod, and likely do a little trimming as well.

The removal of the mudflaps was a good step..

I'll skim thru again, but I'm looking to push the rear of the liners back (not forward in the font), as that is where I'm rubbing.

Have you removed the mud flap already? It shouldn't be rubbing in rear of the fender liner.

2017 TRD Pro. Went with K02 in 275. No rub at all....until i put on the spidertrax 1.25 spacers!!! Used a heat gun on mudflaps and Trimmedn the front bumber. No more rub!! Plan on going with the toytec lift for the trd pro and 285s once the 275s wear out.

I actually JUST finished this mod. Everything went smoothly minus one silver screw on the passenger side. It didn't want to come out or go back in once removed, so I left it out. I don't feel its needed anyway, the liner is secured with the front black screw. Now I can't wait until my 285 Wildpeaks show up! Hoping for next Wednesday.
