37" surplus MTR tires + Icon stage 3 + extreme fender trimming

the inner diameter of the 16.5's are about 15.5" is this enough to clear the calipers? Ive heard of the newer dodge diesel guys shaving a little of the outside of the calipers down to clear these wheels...

what backspacing are you running? also if you could would you change the backspacing, would that help? I can get these wheels recentered and could go anywhere between 2.5-4.5" of backspacing

Back spacing on mine is 4.1" with a -10mm offset. I'm not sure about clearance on the calipers. Might work based on the numbers and all you've mentioned. It's just going to be a lot of work and trial/error type stuff. And you are going to need a few spare CVs in your truck... Unfortunately, I've discovered that I may not want to go too much more than what I'm running to stay sorta reliable there. At least until a beefy alternative arrives that is... Or I get all the stuff I need squared away to go 3 link SAS! Trust me, I'm currently working more on the latter at this point than trying to make the stock ifs something it isn't...

SAS with 80 series and long fields. Done

Looked at this as a serious option. Running into a few issues with the drive shaft. I could simply cut and swap (instead of a cut and turn) but still the axle is about 1" shorter in length. Also could go custom housing but I am liking the idea of modifying an 80 so I can use off the shelf spare parts rather than carrying extra custom parts. Plus I'd have the benefit of sharing spares with my 80! Currently working on the spreadsheet of what parts, custom parts, problem areas and potential trouble spots I'll run into before slicing and dicing can begin...

possibly custom housing to width, with 80 series balls and outers and custom length inner axles. Mostly a win as far as interchangeability with stock.

A lot of people in the JK community who run 37s are also upgrading their Dana 44s. Wonder how the Toyota rear end will hold up under the added stress if and when the skinny pedal is "irresponsibly" used. .

Pretty sure a Dana 60 would be far batter with a sas. That's what I'd go for! Do it right!

Very true as for a 60, swap one in the rear, too, remove ABS and win lotto. Either way, it would be sweet.

There's a member who owns a 4th gen (the frame is nearly identical in almost all mounting points, measurements, ect.) who is running 37's right now, he went down from his 38's (or maybe 39's I forget) a while back. He's running a 3" Body Lift and a subframe lift on his vehicle and he still had some contact on full flex (if I remember correctly) on last trip we went on a couple weeks ago.

I don't see how you will fit 37's without significant trimming, a decent body lift, and possibly a subframe lift. 35's seem to be the borderline on the J120/J150 vehicles where a standard 3" suspension lift becomes inadequate in height when compression is factored in. The issue isn't going to be as much "fitting" the 37's as much as having them be usable without reducing your travel to non-existent; the 5th gen wheel arches are a bit bigger than the 4th gens, but as the posters above noted, 35's are a tight fit when stuffed even after trimming. The 33's on my '04 have ripped out a screw or two from my mudflap in the rear (not running a full metal rear bumper yet) under full flex/stuffed wheel well and I am running a 2.5" Radflo set-up for a good 3" of suspension lift (I am thinking of making some slightly taller bump stops than the ones provided by Overland Warehouse.)

You may have some issues with the 16.5", I will have to look at my '04 Sport Edition's 17" rims and see how much clearance I have between the caliper and the rim tomorrow morning (the 5th gens basically have the 4th gen "big brakes" which is why 17"s are roughly the smallest you can go.) I think you'll barely be clearing them. There was a member in the 4th gen section that "trimmed" (ground down) his caliper to fit (tightly) 16" rims, but I think he needed really wide rims as the curve of the center section of the wheel needed to clear the caliper shape as well.

What are yalls thoughts? I am wanting to run an Icon stage 3 with Billet UCA's, extreme fender trimming/cutting, 4.56 gears and surplus MTR hummer takeoffs... This will be on my 2012 TE with KDSS
Well, to fit 33" MTRs you'll be doing extreme trimming and cutting. To even hope to run 37's you'll be lowering the cross member/subframe to lower the UCA attachments, doing a bunch of body lift, extending the hell out of the bump stops, making glass fenders, changing the steering stops, and probably still rubbing. For damn sure won't be keeping KDSS. I think you'd want at the very least 4.88+ gears for 37s, which, as far as I know, and not available for the rear diff.

At this level of modification, it's going to become a trailer queen, no matter what. So, why not start with a 1st gen t4r or an 80 series, and make it easier on yourself? I'd love to see a 5th gen on 37s and love highly modified vehicles, but really, how often are you doing trails that require over 33" or 35" tires? I live in the mecca of off road trails and I can count on one (maybe 2) hands the trails I haven't done.

I don't think they are available for the 10+. I looked all over for a more durable axle that could actually handle more lift than stock. Waiting for TC to make them. They are tallying up the people that want them. When they get enough interest they said they would, then we can have real long travel fronts...
Front CV axles are the same for 03+

With 37's, not at all. They updated the rear diff in 2010 because of all of the stock tire size FJ's grenading rear diffs. Would have to go 9" LC, D60 or other axles.

You're talking about Keak's I think.

blk-4runner's build thread - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

My 295s at full tuck when flexed out have bowed my front fender to the point that if you look at them from the side, it looks like I have fiberglass fenders lol. I foresee a lot of things going wrong while flexing 37s if you can even get those to even compress.

I almost pulled the trigger on a dynatrac that I was going to get for a steal. Thought about being the first SAS'ed 5th gen, but I ended up being lame and bought a motorcycle instead lol.

Yeah, he brought it over to the dealership to pick up his old wheel spacers from me when he was running his 38/39's (I don't remember which.) He was telling me that those were still nicking the fenders under compression so he was going to 37's. He is still running 5100's so that doesn't help the compression issue with how much weight he's running. He had some decent flex still this past trip up to the mountains, I think he almost got close to stuffing it once or twice if I remember right.

In any case, to get the 37's to fit and be usable he's running a decent sub-frame lift and some heavy trimming and natural adjustment (his fenders need new clips on the front edge from them popping off from the tires.

I think these RCVPerformance CV axle sets will fit on the 5th gen 4runner: "RCV Performance Ultimate IFS CV Axle Set for Toyota FJ Cruiser ('07 and up), 4 Runner ('03-'09) & Tacoma ('05 and up) *Set includes 2 axles $1,989.99 CVJIFS-TOY2"

my stock gearing is 3.73, 4.56 are the lowest gear they make for this 5th gen as far as I know... I may have bit off far more than I can chew. Im awaiting a chat with CBI offroad on this matter and if it comes to be that 37's are beyond far fetched, Ill throw some 255 80r17 KM2's under it and use the saved money to buy my dream... a clean FZJ80 for funzies and build that.

Yes, they will fit.
