3D-printed Toyota 'Motorsport' License Plate frame

Needed a plate frame for our SR5. Was tempted to run the TRD plastic plate that the dealer sells, but figured that wouldn't be right being that we don't have anything TRD on our 4runner.

So I drew this up and had ShapeWays 3D print it. If anyone likes the file/design, let me know. I'd be happy to send it your way.

Subtle but cool... I think anyway. lol.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. Maybe we should look into adding color (yellow and orange) into the stripes? Or perhaps leaving as is in under-the-radar form?

All black is nice, and Toyota in black with the 3 stripes in the old school colors would look cool as well!:thumb:

I always go frameless for the clean look but with this I might reconsider. Great job, clean and classy!

Tomorrow I'm going to bring the plate to work and see if I can have some decals made for the stripes. I'll have Shapeways.com print out a few more plates so we can do a side-by-side.

The only downside is cost. Believe it or not, but each plate is $50 to print...Plus shipping. 3d printing from a 3rd party just isn't cost-effective. Bummer is that it's just millimeters too tall (Y-axis) to have printed by my own 3d-printer (which would make it only a $20 print). I will ask Shapeways if they do offer bulk-pricing.

I'll update the thread in a day or so with pictures with colored stripes and also the costs to do this. Hope everyone is having a good week. Talk soon.

Looking locally I used to have a link to a site that put creators in touch with local 3dprinter/CNC router makers but I can't seem to find the link. Both the UPS Store (3D Printing Service Locations | The UPS Store) and Staples (via Sculpteo Online 3D printing service ) offer 3d printing at limited locations.

Another option would be to laser cut/engrave using a service like https://www.ponoko.com

Thanks Boort! That's great. Very helpful sources. I will definitely shop around to help make the plates cost as little as possible (without sacrificing quality of course).

Today I worked on the files for decals for the Yellow/Orange/Red Motorsport stripes. Hopefully will have this pinned down in the next couple of days.

Does it have the clips on the backside to attach and hold the license plate? Like it for the front to keep car washes from tugging and bending plate.

So I did stuff today. Drove to a Vinyl shop across town and bought a few yards and had them cut to fill in the stripes. I wanted matte vinyl but they didn't have it in stock. Perhaps something to order for the future? Let me know what you guys think of the Vinyl in-lays. Wondering if we leave the 'Toyota' alone? Would love it in gloss black but that would require a lot of installation time... lol.

Reypac24 - I just took a picture of the backside. I made the retaining tabs larger than most plates. It's a perfect snug fit with your plate in there. I'm happy with the way they turned out. BTW, very cute sharpshooter on you avatar

Per Boort's recommendation I uploaded the STL to Craftcloud and just ordered 4 plate frames in 4 different materials (around the $10-20 range per print). Will probably take 2-3 weeks to receive. Once I receive them i'll share which materials came out best.

A few of you have contacted me for the file which I'm happy to share.

Wow! Both the stealth version and color fill look good but I’d prefer no color for longevity (less to go wrong)

Thoughts on the plates reaction to sun? I’d hate for it to fade and go brittle over time.

If this turns into a group print/buy, I’d shell out for one. Sub’d.

Hi Josh,

I received a couple of them and they do not meet the quality of the one I had Shapeways do (that is now on my wife's 4runner). In fact, I would consider them to be acceptable prints... there's some stringing and inconsistency.. Look cheaper, etc.

Perhaps I contact Shapeways to have them print a handful up and go from there. Adding quantity/volume to a purchase doesn't normally bring down costs with 3d printing, but perhaps we can save on some shipping, lol.

I've emailed the file to a handful of members here. Anybody come up with some good prints? Perhaps those people might be willing to print / sell to us. Keep the $ circulating in this community so-to-speak.
