3RZ Runners Only

Hello everyone,
Compliments to all on the festive season.

I joined this awesome site as I am about to take delivery of what I think is a 3rd gen runner from Japan in January 2016. It has the 3RZ motor and has done 75 000km's.
I surf this site in awe at what some of you guys are able to do to your Yotas, I hope to learn what all the lingo is - codes you guys use for springs and lifts etc can be daunting to a newbie.
First thing with where I live in the Bush at this time of year with the rains will be some lift or another.
Our internet is delivered via satellite so connection is very limited and also slow but I will research as much as I can on lifts.
Thank you all for such great information, I look forward to feeding my addiction.
All the best,
Moz.

So I got my Christmas bonus and I need some help blowing it responsibly ;):

Just wondering if anyone here is running the 3RZ LCE longtube header for our truck.

What do you like /not like?
How does it fit?
And does it help any with low end powa? (obviously, no, its not gonna turn my truck into a racecar, but a little sumthin dont hurt)

On my last small 4cyl build I used a doug thorley, and it was a very nice little improvement.

I'm not running them currently I almost pulled the trigger a couple mths back but saved an argument at that point. Lol
My buddy is using them and they are *****in feels good sounds good as it also gets rid of the slug bug crawl up hills and mountain roads without downshifting the whole freakin time lol and there is a member or two on here that has them as well.

Yup, I'm running that one with a JBA cat back.. Its a decent header, fits good, sounds great, and is less restrictive than the stock manifold, not sure about gain in power but it does feel 'peppier'. I would highly recommend it! plus LCE is a great company to deal with.

if you need any pics let me know!

I run the lce and a cat back. I like it a lot. There's a good increase in power but a piggy back tuner is needed after the intake is done. Probably need a cam upgrade to really see some progress in power better than the 3.4.

I know "The Crawl" well, its a dance Red and I do quite often. I little low end wouldn't hurt this truck at all.

Thnaks man, just the kind of feedback I was hoping for.

Cams would be freakin Boss! But maybe a ways down the road.

Thanks for the repies fellas, this makes me feel pretty positive about getting one. And if you guys didnt know LCE has a 10% off sale going on thru the end of December too.

That's legit but if I got cams.....my wife would have my balls wrapped in that engine.

My final idea for the 3rz is to find a fresh block and build it from the bottom myself. Build it with some solid reliable stuff and an upgraded head before I toss a supercharger on it and call it good. I figure if drag racers can pull 1000+ I can get a 350hp engine for a reliable dd.....with decent gas mileage lol.

I think he's talking about using a 2TR bellhousing to put an R150F V6 5 Speed behind his 3RZ.
Ohhhh gotcha. Well it would be an easy way to get the multimode transfer case and I know the r150 is easier to find than the w59 as well. Other than that it comes down to ratios and what would be more advantageous.

Precisely UnderFire, I am using the 2tr-fe to couple the R150F to the 3rz b/c I am the second generation in my family to own this 3rd gen. I am far too along in this build and have already dropped the dollar on some big parts to come soon.

I'm loving my Doug Thorley, maybe it gave me 5hp? Sounds better than that awful manifold thats known to crack over time. It's well worth $400.

Make sure you do a thread on this! I am very interested in what's cooking in your garage.

I'm updating my suspension setup since it is the original with almost 200k miles on it. After researching i think im going to go with Billy 5100 and OME 906's for the rear. It seems like this would be a good setup according to the site, but wanted to see if anyone here with the 3rz has done this, and see if there is any difference.

Also, What would be a good front setup to pair with this?

Thanks :llama:

I have that setup right now. Rides well but it's a little light for my personal amount of metal I have attached. If you are currently stock and plan to be so it is not a bad setup. I have a solid rear shelf, full length rack up and a custom swingout. This summer....hopefully....I will be doing a rear bumper. I'm actually looking to do 891 springs soon but probably not soon enough for you.

I have 99 coils paired with Billy 5100 and I think they ride great on the second perch. I think it's around 2" of lift there.

New Toy

It begins - just picked up this 2 owner, dealer serviced 1999 yesterday. List of coming mods is already long.

Will be my first 3rd gen 4Runner to mod, but I have built up 3 1986 ones in the past.

In a short while probably today, I will be posting a parts list in chronological order of what the plans are as of right now. So far, I have spent hours on the phone with Mitchell from Marlin Crawler, to talk gear ratios and case set ups.
PLANS ARE:
- 2TR-FE Bellhousing out of a 05+ Tacoma 2.7l Access Cab
- R150F Transmission with Marlin Crawler T-Case Adapter to run their Gear Driven Dual T-Case.
*Reason for running R150F* - The R150F is a direct bolt-on to the 2TR-FE bellhousing platform, input shaft length will be the correct size without modification. HOWEVER, the R150f came in the 3.0 V6 as well and in that case I would need to trim the bellhousing to match the input shaft length. So, less Fab = more OEM in my opinion and more security for my own conscience.
-Dual Case will be the 2.28:1 because I want close to OEM gearing and 4.70:1 would be a bit too low for something DD/trail/Overland. In Double Low it will be a 5:1 ratio for technical stuff which is PLENTY low and I can keep near factory gearing in 2wd and around town.
-Running this will allow for me to run the Gear Driven T-Case which is [Passenger Side] Drop, this is important because I can run a Toyota FZJ80 axle up front which again MORE OEM. I will run 4.88 Yukon Grizzly gears in the chunk. It will be a coil bucket system just like what comes in the land cruiser from the factory with a 3-link kit (still juggling with johnny joints vs heims b/c I will be in colorado for the next 5+ years or so and colorado is rude to heims, it would just mean more maintenance.
*Reason for 4.88 Gears*
-I am also acquiring parts for the performance side of things LC Engineering 3rz turbo kit. If you have any insight to add to my cause post up! It will be the LCE high boost not low boost, keep that in mind.
-Turbo means Engine components:
Bottom End, Top End, Rebuild etc.

Stay Tuned for a List!

This is just my .02 but for dd/expedition type rigs reliability is more important than power. I vote for the high boost supercharger and a pair of cams. Stage 1 will be plenty and you will gain considerably all around with the supercharger. Turbos have a narrow band of power, it comes on suddenly, and it's more stressful on the block.

What size tires will you run? I have a 4.30 in mine right now with a 31" tire and it is too low for that size. I believe for a 255/85 I will just need 4.56 and if I were to go 35" or 37" then you would want the 4.88.

I've dd a 34" tire and it grew tiresome lol. It's a longer way up than I had anticipated.

I would go ahead with the 4.7 gearing in one of the cases. You will retain the stock 4wd gearing since you will have a dual case, plus you will have the 4.7, then if you're really somewhere where walking is better than riding but you want your truck to follow I believe it's 13 or 14 to 1 in low low.

I completely here where you are coming from and I agree with you. However, one thing is that I will be including adjustable cam gears, a full valve kit, MLS Head gasket (Multi layer shim), as well as some other engine supporting mods, this won't be as simple as bolt on and go. There is an extensive engine supporting mod list I've made with the help of Brad over at LCE. These mods could allow me to adjust the boost from 10-12lbs around town to 18-20lbs on the trails, dunes, etc. (wherever there is dirt).Parts list 1.jpg
Essentially I will have full tune-ability with all of the mods, most helpful will be the stand alone system. Parts list 2.jpg

*Note* Not mommy and daddy's money that will make this happen I have worked consistently for 5 years building and acquiring as I go.

My plans for reliability will depend on auctioning with a dealers license to acquire an FZJ 80 or FJ 80 that is wrecked to part out and keep front suspension mounts, links, components, axle (maybe rear axle).
Opinion about SAS with the FZJ 80 axle?
RHD axle wont be a problem because the R150F>2TR-FE Bell Housing>T-case adapter>Gear driven case is in fact RHD. I will be running 35's at the largest as of right now, I have 33's and 4.10 gearing, I have noticed a bit of a power loss from the 33's but if you look at the factory spec it is a 31 tire with 4.10 gearing, I think Toyota knows their stuff because they nailed it on the head when they geared and spec'd the 4Runner.
-My gearing will be 4.88, with 2.28:1 double low again, it will be plenty low to creepy crawl, I would be in 4th and 5th if i had the 4.70:1 Duals running that setup.
