5th Gen Marker Lights in Grill

Where did you get the lights that are beside the fog lights?

Those are just the factory DRLs that came with the truck. Clear lenses with the amber bulbs.

Amber Marker Lights on 2017 T4R LTD

Bought 4, put in 2. Thinking of putting in the other two down low near the fog lights. Not sure how easy it is to remove that plastic trim around the fog though. There is an empty space there that would fit these in perfect.

Thoughts?

So here are couple of pics of where I've tapped into the side marker lights. Again, I've changed my marker lights to LED's. So the combined load of the marker lights and the 3 grill marker lights are relatively low and rest assured you won't be popping/blowing the fuse.

For reference, the green wire is the power. I just tapped into the green wire. The white is ground. For my ground wire from the grill lights, I just grounded it separately. In the pic, black wire to ground. Hope this helps.

How did you install that wire tap? Did you remove the light housing or go through the wheel well removing the plastic wheel well liner? Thank you!

I removed the fender liner as well as remove the black plastic piece running along side the inner fender along the hood. Hope that makes sense.

You need to add a couple of 10 amp fuses (*edit* not 10 amp, do your research, my electrician skills are non existsnt*) to the add a fuse. I disassembled/reassembled my setup 4 times before I figured it out :ybrick:

I want it on the record, and for someone trying to be thorough and going through this process, this writing is very confusing.

Do you mean TWO 10amp mini fuses, plugged into the slots, that go into the fuse box next to the parking break as indicated? If so, I got stuck at this point as well, and can't get power to the market lights.

How did you guys feed the wires thru the firewall? I took the rubber grommet off but don't see an opening into the cabin. Do I have to cut the carpet to feed the wires thru?

Everything is wired up except for this part. A picture of the inside of the cabin where where the wire(s) is fed thru would be great. Thanks in advance.

No. You do not need to cut the carpet. See post 347 of this thread for some photos:

Remove the kick panel on the drivers side (next to where your left foot goes). Poke a hole in the engine compartment grommet. Stick a coat hanger through that hole and you'll see where it enters the engine compartment.

I went a but of a different route and put them right below the Toyota. You can't see them when you are standing there and they look good when on. I also used the small dot LEDs

Few questions for those who know more than I:

1. Has anyone done the RCO method, but added a switch? I realize this is one of the attributes of the marker light tap method, but I really don't want to tap a wire if I don't have to. I don't like the risks of corrosion, water damage, etc.
2. Am I overstating the risks with a T tap? It seems that a few people here believe this is the cleanest way.
3. Why not use the engine bay fuse box?
4. How are people lighting the amber turn signal lights (parking lights) without igniting the DRLs?

I didn't really see a good write up on this, so I went through it on my own, so I'll post it here.

First off don't ever use a wire T-Tap on a 40k vehicle, there are always ways around it. Second, I never fuse tap into the under hood fuse box. Toyota's are known for electrical gremlins, so I try to be the least evasive, and always make it so I can return it to stock.

All in all this was fast an easy. It took longer to make this post than to install the lights. I will update if I have any issues.

I used these lights from Amazon.

Prepped the light tails. No need for fancy connectors.

I used high quality zip ties, I might change to small bolts if I feel like it.

Then I prepped the harness using 18ga, cause that's the smallest I had.

Then covered it in some split loom.

Plugged it all in, and filled the connectors with some di-electric grease.

Then added some electrical tape to the connection areas.

I ran the power wire through the small hole that the hood latch cable goes through. It fits no problem, and I was able to push it through with only hand pressure. I wrapped the area that goes through the firewall with electrical tape for added protection.

Then I got out my Voltage Meter and searched for a switched circuit. I found an unused one that was hot when the ignition was on, but not hot when the key is turned to acc.

I used a fuse tap I got off Amazon. These are nice, because the new circuit is powered through the main fuse, that way you can't overload it, if you were to tap into a circuit that is already in use.

I only had 15amp mini fuses, so I'll have to switch them out to some 3amps tomorrow.

Works great. Much brighter than I thought.

Just one 10amp. These draw nothing, go as low as possible.
