Alternate Rack

I just ordered a Gamiviti full size expedition Rack from Tim. He has been making custom racks for Land Cruisers for 10 years but has branched out to 4runners a couple of years ago. His rack is somewhat similar to the Gobi rack but I like it a lot better. He additionally will customize the rack to however you want it; additional mesh, a drop down basket, additional gussets or light bar tabs, sunroof cutout, or whatever. His uses the factory mounting points and then two additional points up front using NutZerts. He is based out of Denver. He even customized some riser towers so I can mount Yakima cross bars if I choose. I can’t speak to the quality yet as I don’t have it but It’s gotten pretty rave reviews on the cruiser forums.

Post some pictures of it installed. I have a friend with a land cruiser and one of these racks. He loves it and I really like the flat utility look to it.

How many bars you need depends on what you're looking to carry up there. You can always expand later.

I’ve had mine for a fee weeks now and I’m digging it so far. I don’t store stuff on my roof that often and even then I don’t need the storage capacity of the larger racks. I also drive anywhere from 20-25k miles a year so a low profile mount that doesn’t affect my mileage is key. No appreciable increase in wind noise.

There’s threaded inserts on each bar plus slots and holes. You should be able to mount most anything up there without too much drama. Much better for Home Depot runs too.

I think that would be my go to option if they made it or something similar in aluminum to be lighter. I just found out the stock bars are only rated to like 135lbs :wow2: If/when I upgrade all I would put up top is Maggiolina tent, Hi-lift jack, and occasionally swap a Thule ski rack on top. Does it look like Thule items can be easily mounted on there?
 
I went with a full length Frontrunner. Love the design. It was also nice that I had it less than a week after placing the order.

Installed my Frontrunner slimline II 3/4 rack yesterday and love it. I didn’t get the full length just because I wasn’t comfortable drilling into the roof and felt like I didn’t really need the full length. I do like that I can fit my Yakima Fatcat up there.

They were talking about an aluminum version a few months ago on their Facebook page, not sure if that’s still in the works.

The tent and high lift jack should be fine. The front and back crosspieces have extra reinforcement to attach an RTT. Their youtube channel has some videos that explain it better than their website.

I would imagine Thule stuff would fit, just because of all the slots and holes, but that is a guess since I don’t have personal experience with them.

If theirs are anything like ours, aluminum doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Our Ruggedized Crossbars weigh about 5 pounds each, so they're already pretty light weight. Hard to justify the cost increase to aluminum when you don't save that much weight.

Yeah, racks are not a fashion statement to me.

So ease of removal is very attractive to me, especially when they are not in use.

Light, cheap, what's not to like... :nod:

Are these new? They look great. Have you actually stored stuff on them? They are so lo profile is it hard to mount stuff down? Do you have to take the whole rack off just to push a bolt up through the bottom?

I'm kind in the same boat of not using a rack often. Well, I don't have one so I never use it now, but the opportunities when I've wanted one have been few as well, which makes it hard for me to justify the purchase of a full system. Most of the time I'm by myself or with one kid, and I have plenty of room inside for stuff. But once my younger kids get a little older I expect to have a full load of people and need the extra storage options.
