Alternator part has me confused...

I may need a new alternator and I was doing some preliminary browsing of the part. I'm seeing the part listed on most websites for around 300 bucks (oem). BUT I'm seeing this other part called the STATOR which runs closer to 600 bucks. According to the diagrams the Stator looks like it goes inside the alternator. So how the heck can the whole assembly cost $300, but if you're just buying a part that goes inside of it costs close to $600?? If someone could help shed some light on this for me I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm probably overlooking something obvious, I apologize if that's the case.

Not sure about that, but if you search vendor Bumper2Bumper he could probably answer that. But he also sells high output alternators at a good price.

A new alternator is $375 at my dealer.

What makes you think you need a new one? I only ask because I'm trying to diagnose mine as well.

Well, I'm not sure how to answer that question because usually factory ("Red Box" Toyota) alternators are in the $600+ range. But OEMs can be cheaper than that...

If you're going OEM I'd get an aftermarket Denso, they're the most similar to the factory units.

ever thought about a high output alternator? my 240amp costed me about 425ish.

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated. To answer the above question, I'm getting serious "whine" that corresponds with acceleration. And I've narrowed down the source to my alternator. The whine gets louder the higher the rpm's go. I've been told that's the early signs of a failing alternator.

Have you looked into the pulleys on your serpentine belt? The bearings going out on those can cause a similar noise.

Yes sir I have. I don't believe it's coming from there, but when I eventually get it to my mechanic I'll have him check to be thorough. But the reason I'm fairly certain it's the alternator is because I used a stethascope and you can really hear the whine when it's on there. I did some research on here and like you said those pulleys can be the culprit. Thanks for checking me on that.

You're welcome. It's good to be armed with as much info as you can find. I usually check the cheapest part first haha.
