Anything about your 4R that just drives you crazy?????

Issues from the factory, as some have mentioned:

-Map lights not coming on --> as mentioned there's a fix for that
-engine tick
-I'm 6'2" 200lbs so the head room isn't really there (more of a personal problem though)
-those damn cupholders --> shout out to TiN for making a solution
-the lifespan on CV joints seems to not be up to par with 4runner competitors
-lack of 12v outlets

My trucks personal problems:
-rust on the liftgate around the window... it's a terrible reminder it needs to be fixed every rain storm on my white paint :woozy:

This is only my second car, but it's been 10000x better than my first (08 Mazda speed3; still loved that one too). At this current state, I'll keep my 4Runner as long as possible and this forum has contributed to a lot of my enjoyment of the rig.

Don't really have much complaints here... love my 4Runner.

Front seats suck. I'm 6'2" 195lb and a lot of that is torso height. To have decent headroom clearance (I have a sunroof) I have to have the rear portion of the seat at the lowest position. From there, I can't really find a position that's comfortable for my lower, mid back, and head (using the headrest) all at the same time.

Not to mention I have to crane my neck to see traffic lights, but there's no fixing that problem with the low roofline (unless I put a front camera in, attached to my rearview mirror, and route that to my headunit? Then I'll just look at that!)


I'm seriously considering having custom seat brackets made up that get as low as possible, and putting in a new seat in 2018. I'd rather keep it stock, and I love the heated seats, but long drives give me neck and shoulder pain...


edit: FYI, for anyone looking for a perfect cup/thermos for the cup holder... the Yeti 36oz rambler bottle fits like a glove. The lid/handle It might knock into your climate controls under heavy braking, but no biggie. https://intl.yeti.com/drinkware/rambler-36-oz-bottle/YRAM36.html

Is the ticking noise coming from the bottom front passenger side? May be the air mix servo. Take a look at this:

Thanks, I hadn't seen that easier method for the map light mod so I'll be doing it. Thanks also for the link but the click is not the air mix servo, it's clearly from the seat itself and only occurs when the seat is occupied.

I am having this same issue as well.

All nitpicking issues but the ones that bug me the most:

- No auto down switch for passenger window

- Placement of rear window switch behind steering wheel

- Rear door handle gooey rubber switch handle

- Rear door electronic lock (why? so unnecessary)

- Absolutely worthless cupholders

- Sounds alarm if you try to lock doors with key fob and a door is open (I know its open I left it open on purpose).

- Clicking AC servos

- Disconnected rear defroster due to shattering windows

- Double decker cargo system. Always leave it folded down as it essentially makes the cargo area worthless otherwise.

I'll add to the comments about the crappy front seats and lack of headroom, pretty terrible. I have to keep my head in the sunroof area otherwise it will constantly hit the headboard and I'm only 6'2.

I got a chance. I read the linked thread again and saw one part of it was easy - greasing the ends of that crossbar. I hit it with some spray lithium grease this afternoon, then tilted the seat back all the way forward and back a couple of times (I have the power seats). We went out tonight and no noises from the passenger seat! My elation is only tempered by how stupid I feel for not doing it a year ago. :redface:

It has the WORST CRUISE CONTROL ON THE PLANET! Maybe mine is different but it hunts by +/- 4MPH. It's only aggravated by the fact that I hate interstate drivers that can't pick a speed and force you to pass/be passed/pass again/be passed again, again and again and again... and now *sigh* I'm one of them. I've searched, but I haven't found a solution. *sniff*

Wait, so when your cruise control is engaged and you press the stick up or down to regulate speed it changes by 4mph for each press!? That's a new one and would drive me crazy. I wouldn't be able to live without cruise control.

- Cracked manifolds and the ticking noise (hope to get my headers installed soon)
- Cracked dashboard (It started cracking after the replacement warranty expired)
- Auto up/down only for driver's window
- Seat cushion is uncomfortable on long trips
- Frame rust
- Getting 10-15 MPG

But overall I look past these things because it has been super reliable and still looks and drives great.

No, when it starts up a grade it slows by as much as 4MPH before it begins to accelerate and at the top of the hill it goes as much as 4MPH over the set speed before it backs off. I have no problem dropping my speed to avoid arousing the ire of a trooper, but an 8MPH speed differential is... extreme... and can be the difference between being a traffic impediment and getting a ticket.

I've owned other Toyota's and I've had cars with crappy cruise control. This one is the worst. I still love my truck though.

I've never heard of a Toyota/Lexus cruise control having that much of a struggle maintaining speed. Something must be wrong somewhere. Based on my experience Chrysler/dodge vehicles seem to be the worst.

This is definitely my biggest gripe about my 4runner. I’ve got an 07 v8 and any decent incline it will loose a bit of speed from my set cruise control (-5km/hr or so) then it will aggressively downshift and roar past my set speed. Then it will shift up and slow itself down to get back into the set speed range but then cannot maintain the speed in that gear to only repeat the process until the terrain levels out.

This summer I was towing a dual motorcycle trailer with one bike on the back. Highway was perfectly level but there was a little bit of a wind. The 4runner would constantly do this down shift, accelerate, shift, decelerate with about a 10 second cycle and it was driving me nuts.
Probably the only thing I cannot stand on this vehicle

I've read other threads about people having similar issues and mine seems to be on the outside edge of normal. It's not always +/- 4MPH either, smaller hills it might only be a couple of MPH, but it's extreme to me. I have other complaints too; the cup holders suck, there's no transmission dipstick, It's dumb to have an "off-road" truck with an under-slung spare, but it's the cruise that absolutely drives me batty. Someday when I'm feeling brave (or I've stopped caring) I'll try to crack the CCU and reprogram it. It's not an ECU or TCU issue. It just seems to be programmed to be lazy. When I cancel the cruise control manually I can feel the computer rolling off the throttle on a similar response curve to its speed adjustment. If cancel it by tapping the brake, it drops off the throttle instantly. It's capable of faster response, it was just programmed for smoothness instead and that causes it to occasionally downshift and accelerate more violently than if it had just applied throttle earlier and slightly more aggressively.

Don't get me started on Chrysler. It's just my opinion, but if I included them in my baseline for terribleness... it would skew the average significantly. ...just my opinion.

I really like the remote button to lower the back window, but they could have allowed the same button to close it.

Can't be a safety thing since the automatic tailgate closer system is plenty dangerous.

Hmm. I thought that was normal for any vehicle. If the transmission hunts, it’s lower gear time. Seems typical, but I haven’t done a poll, although yes it can be annoying. Anyway you can step on the gas a little when going up a hill and it will hold the gear much longer before downshifting.
