Toyota glass is very soft and has pitted easily for years. I've had two other Toyota's without coated glass and they both were severely pitted due to salted/sanded highways.
Anything about your 4R that just drives you crazy?????

No decent interior light switch and non-roll up window from remote is irritating. Our windshield has been cracked along the bottom since just after we took ownership and promptly drove it to Colorado to visit friends but now it is really hard to get clean so it's going in for a new windshield next week. $200 installed ain't to bad. Seats aren't the most comfy either, may put something else in there to sit on for the road trips.

When it's warm out..and I can roll down a window...I have to roll down either (one of the Fronts). If I roll down one of the rears..I get a sound buffering like the air movement is just bouncing around inside the truck. I then have to roll down the Front corresponding window to eliminate the buffering. My pathfinders....the buffering would only happen if I rolled down BOTH rear windows...If I rolled down just one rear window then no buffering. I prefer to just have ONE rear window rolled down due to the increased noise rolling down a front window creates.

By far the #1 design screw-up in my opinion is the climate control system automatically enabling recirc when the temp setpoint is lowered. When the A/C is off and it's cold outside the system should NEVER go to recirc if the user wants it cooler inside. That is beyond idiotic.

I probably posted this same one sometime in the past year but I'm all pissed off about it again.
Just helped my niece buy an old Santa Fe. Lots of little hidey-holes and storage compartments in the cargo area in that car. What I would give for a little compartment to store tools, jumper cables, and who knows what

A few things that bug me.
- Lack of interior button to pop the rear hatch.
- Overall just weird AC controls.
- The nice large storage hatch on the passenger side in the rear cargo area, but the vertical storage area for the jack/tools on the opposide side. Seems like you could have put a few more storage areas back there.
- The pop out ash tray thing below the AC controls. Its sort of a useless space. Would have much preferred just a deep plastic hole.
- Electronic 4x4 switch. Takes too long. Would have much preferred an actual lever.
- Rear seats not laying completely flat when folded over. They get close but not perfectly flat
- no easy way to roll rear window back up without putting key in the hole and holding down
- Can't run the fog lights without running the headlights.
- Stupid placement of the downhill button. I bump it with my elbow all the time, it should be relocated to the dash near the center diff lock button.
- Non teloscoping steering wheel (only tilt)
- Cant shut off traction control (you *can* but only up to ~20mph, or through modification)
- The map lights aren't part of the interior lights when you open the doors. Why have 2 bright lights above the drivers heads that don't light up when you get into the car.
Just small stuff. Otherwise I love the vehicle and I find a lot of things that make a lot of sense from an engineering/usability point of view.
One of my buddies saw the oil filter placement and says "Oh man, thats awesome, its just right here up on top of the engine? You don't even have to get under the car! Whats this cup/nipple under it? Oh thats awesome, so when it leaks oil, you can catch/drain it ... dude thats cool. I use the sunglass holder all the time. The burger trays (front and back)... its like a magic trick anytime I have people in the car with food/beverages.

Regarding the seats --- are you folding the seat bottoms forward before flipping the seatbacks down? Mine does lie fairly flat, although the original owner removed (and threw away) the cargo shelf, so I do have a bit of a hump there.
Also, are you sure you don't have a telescope wheel? My 03 has it, and I've never seen a 4th gen that didn't. It might just be a Limited thing though.

08 Sr5 4.0. Telescoping steering wheel was an upgrade (I think sport and limited). Tilting was standard.

I have a long list:
We just bought ours used and we both have had many different brands of cars and models and this truck has some things that I can't figure out why hey would of done it that way for such an expensive truck.
So, for a $60,000+ (with tax vehicle, here in Canada) why wouldn't it come with:
- up down electric control for passenger seat.
- heated seats where the lumbar portion also gets heated.
- a wiper system so that when you spray the solution on your windsheild the wipers automatically wipe it up 3-4 times and then shut down on their own, rather than me having to hold it.
- a rear defrost that actually works.
We just bought ours used and we both have had many different brands of cars and models and this truck has some things that I can't figure out why hey would of done it that way for such an expensive truck.

....oh and why there is no place to put things in the console. Why did they even bother with that flat grooved out area at the top of the gear shifter, which holds nothing. Why didn't they put a big opening where you can dump things like keys, gum, wallet, phones etc.
- oh and I get the whole keyless thing but it drives me nuts that:
1) I have to push the break peddle down to start the car. So, if I am a passenger I have to literally reach my leg over and practically hop over to the other seat to press on the break to get the button to work if I need to crack a window or play music while waiting for the driver. I think this is silly.
2) why don't they give you a specific place to put the key fob and keys in the console, so that you always go to that spot to grab them when you leave the truck. Because the keys are always in my purse, it drives me nuts to have to dig them out to open the rear gate for stuff or to them get out of the truck and go to enter my home but forget that I don't have my keys in my hand like I am used to and have to dig to the bottom of my purse to find them to open the door. I feel like this truck was designed with only a man in mind, not how a women would use it, in regards to things like this. Women don't normally have pockets to put keys in.
- the dials on the radio are terrible. You turn the dial to a station and it either doesn't register the turn you just made with the dial or it completely skips over a few without you even overturning it. It is the most unexact radio dial I have ever encountered. The radio dial on my Dad's old 1975 oldsmobile delta 88 that I used to drive has more exactness than this radio. How did it even pass?
- The maps guide is useless. Wish there was a way to put google maps on it. We both have not figured out how to move the map around without it not going all haywire after we touch it.
- the button for the rear window is in a super terrible spot. If you happen to be carrying a backpack or purse and bring it into the car via the drivers side and then haul it across the console onto the passenger seat, you can really easily touch that button without knowing it, making the back window go down ever so slightly that without even knowing it, you are driving around with it open a slight crack in the depths of winter. Then you are on the highway and need to use the back wiper or defrost and you can't figure out why both won't work. Until you get home after a nail-biting trip home cause you couldn't see out the back window the whole time, to then find out, it's cause that damn button was just slightly touched. Ugh.
- Same with the heated seat controls. Here in Canada they get used alot, and to have them in such an awkward place in the middle console, whereby you have to really take your eyes off the road to turn them on / off / or adjusted is just unsafe. Plus the controls are some wishy-washy dial that you can't feel just by touch where abouts the heat temp is at, so you have to look at it. For instance you have them on high but it's getting hot on your bum, so you want to not turn it right off, but just turn it down a bit, but you can't do it without having to look right down at it. Bad design. As a designer there are a lot of things that I am surprised the Japanese let pass on this truck. They are way more skillful at interior design and useful space design than this.
What I do like is how comfy the driver and passenger seats are. Just wish the passenger seat had more up/down control for the 50% of the population that is still at 5'4" - 5'5" tall that need to have a lower seat.

The 4Runner is still a base SUV, even with the Limited trim package. It's not suppose to be fancy or expensive. Toyota has Lexus and their Land Cruiser line for that. I have no idea what pricing is like in Canada, but in the U.S. a good 4th gen is $10k-$14k, and a good 5th gen is $20k-$30k. I would never spend $50k U.S. for any 4Runner.

Ditto on the telescoping wheel as being an optional feature. Swapping out the steering column with a telescoping one is on my future mod list.

I dislike that it is not easily replaceable. I've been wanting something new, shopping hard and have not found anything even close to the 2005.
Every time I find a good candidate it has some major drawback, like a 4cyl engine.

Although I love my 4Runner, my biggest gripe is that there aren't any lights to indicate where my door locks or window controls on the doors, besides the drivers. Anyone else find this a little irritating?
