blown diffs + exams/projects + ZERO free time = a very stressful few weeks.
So I blew both diffs last weekend, crazy. Did some searching and found these for cheap. I wish I had the budget to regear or at least add a locker right now, but when you blow both diffs (4.10 gears), then find "3rd Gen toyota 4runner front and rear diffs 4.10 gears" for $350, I gotta believe it was a gift from God after being quoted $2500+ by a shop to do the work. Now I just gotta find a driveway to work in...can't stand living in this apartment.
Yep, I wasn't sure if it was the diffs, t-case or tranny at first. It sounded like a machine gun going off, among other noises. Took it to a shop (Best Western Transmission gets decent reviews for anyone questioning the shop's credibility) and they said the front is completely destroyed, and the back isn't quite as bad, but still blown. They said that everything else was fine, so I'm hoping they're right.
First up is saving cash to put into a "just-in-case" fund.
Then, mainly just small stuff, i.e. I have a sub & amp from my previous truck, so I'll put those in around the same time the diffs get installed, then probably a CB radio. Maybe a storage system in back for the sub,amp and misc. tools? not sure yet.
I'll also probably start searching for a good deal on steel plate since I found a friend willing to teach me to weld... :biggrin2:
My first post here explains what happened. Haven't told a person yet who wasn't dumbfounded, even the shop said its crazy. I really hope these diffs do the trick, but I have a weird feeling that there may be something else...Mainly just a fear of that, because I can't really afford it being much more than that right now. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/129494-help-my-runner-dead.html
Spent a few hours and got my sub and amp installed, sounds fantastic! Its a Kenwood 12" with a Kenwood Mono amp. I had them in my truck before the T4R, so why not put em back to use? I'm hoping to build a storage box this summer with these built in.
I have 2 weeks to kill before school starts back up, so I decided to start on replacing my diffs today. Got under it to find that 2 of the bolts connecting my drive shaft are missing...Apparently I didn't tighten them enough when I had it out last  Looks like I'm off to the dealer to pick some up. Moved on to the rear diff, and got the new one in. Took maybe 5 hours from taking wheels off to getting the wheels back on with everything connected but the drive shaft.
If I had a shop with a lift vs. laying on my back the entire time (wrestling with the diffs, bolts, etc.), it probably would've shaved a good hour or 2 off. Not to mention it was about 35 degrees all day.
started with these:
Took the old rear diff out to find about 8 teeth in shards from two places:
I'll probably work on the front diff this weekend, then fill them up, try to jump start my dead battery, and see if I have a working 4Runner!
Well it's been way too long, but I finally got the front fixed! The CV's did NOT want to come out of the old diff, so I took em apart at the joints and added new grease and clamps, which pretty much showed me what to do when I decide to reboot. Then I bled the brakes (Speedbleeders are wonderful). Overall, swapping diffs is a relatively simple job, just super time-consuming and requires a lot of tools & oil that are handy to have anyway. Plus, it helps with general knowledge for future maintenance.
This part seems crazy: replacement drain bolt vs. the one that was in my blown diff. Apparently whatever teeth are floating around got to it.
Old out, new about to go in:
No diff, CV joints all naked & whatnot:
I'll post pics of the old diff ring when I open it up, probably tomorrow...
Not much of an update but a few months ago TMAC110 (my roommate) snapped his rear swaybar and found another one with endlinks at the junkyard. I snagged his old ones and finally got around to swapping them into mine. They look to be about 2 inches longer than mine were.
I know the boots aren't great but they're better than my old ones anyway.
So I was browsing Craigslist yesterday and something caught my eye, so I called the guy up and picked this up today! E-Locker!!!
It came off a '98 4Runner, and the guy swears its a 4.10 ratio, so no need to regear, although I'll double-check before proceeding. I'll have the 3rd rebuilt for safe measure, then I'll re-do the axle seals and inspect the wheel bearings, sand/paint everything to get rid of the surface rust, and swap this one under the rig! Just gotta figure out the wiring part.
Great find! Yeah that would be pretty bad if you put it on only to find out it's not 4.10! I'm glad to see there is someone else out there on a college budget! Stuff doesn't come as fast, but when it does it makes it all the more worthwhile.

Stuff definitely doesn't come fast, but make sure to have some savings whenever possible in case you find a deal! OR if you happen to grenade both diffs and have to pay to replace them. Scroll up to find out how I know...
I just browsed your build thread, looks like you have a great rig to start on!
Craigslist is my friend. Lol yeah I read about it man! That really sucks! But hey it all worked out in the end. And thanks! I'm really looking forward to this summer! Hopefully it will yield large amounts of lift
