Yeah, the diff fit like a very tight glove. The crossmember is coming very soon, I'll get plenty of pics for you.

Short day today. I came down with the flu and wasn't feeling up to working too much.

The clutch and brake pedals are out of the donor.

Manual vs Auto brake pedal

Auto brake pedal out, master cylinder moved out of the way.

Take notice of the clutch master shaped cutout on the left.

Old seal (left) vs new seal (right) for the hub/CV axles

CV axles installed - the front end is mostly complete.

Next was to create a cardboard template for the clutch master bolt pattern. There's a convenient body line in the firewall to use as a reference point.

The template hugs that body line making it easy to transfer the proper bolt pattern to the green 4Runner.

A little spray of black spray paint and the bolt pattern is ready to be drilled out.

And drilled!

The adapter on the master that attaches to the clutch had was best removed and installed from inside the truck.

And installed!

Decided to also switch over the Optima Yellow top from the donor, complete with a lovely spacer for the bracket.

Skid is staying off for now. The transmission will be underway next week.

I've got to hand it to you, your truck used to be a 4runner that i would've barely glanced at driving down the road but you've turned your rig into one of the nicest rigs on here! Your mods are perfect and i have to bow down to you for taking on the 4x4 swap. A good build is never done......keep doing what you do best!

Thank you for the nice words man! It's still got a huge way to go, so it especially means a lot when you say that it's one of the nicest. I hope that it will someday be worthy of the likes of brian2sun, driffter33, jmoney, sn0wrunner, steezemcqueen, etc (can't name all the sweet 4Runners on here.. I don't have enough time!)



Update time!

The process so far has been the easy part. The rest of the swap is the hard part. The transmission won't likely be in until the end of this week or next week. I spent 8 hours on the truck today and I barely got anywhere... this is tough!

An early morning trip to the Home Depot for some metal sawzall blades meant it's time to start cutting things.

First cuts: donor truck transmission tunnel. I'm going to use the manual transmission hole in my 3rd gen by literally transplanting it over. This will be the best way to retain the original mounting points for the shifter boots.

Next up, dash came out and the wiring mayhem began. I removed the entire wiring harness from the B-pillar forward.

I've got wiring diagrams-o-plenty to study... I'm basically going to remove all of the wires needed and run a 2nd custom harness using OEM wires/colors/length. I've already figured out a bunch of what the 99 4Runner will need, but there's far more left between the different shift-on-the-fly functions and auto disconnecting diff. This will take a while.

The wiring harness in the base model lacks so many options. I'm transplanting more than just the 4WD and manual transmission related wires, I'll also be running all of the SR5 wires for the options that the base model doesn't have, such as lighted sun visors and heated side mirrors.

Speaking of heated side mirrors, the IJM ones on my rig were from a burnt 01 SR5, so they already do have a heating element in them. The original black base model mirrors did not have heat, nor the wiring for the heater. One mirror from the burnt truck had a missing pigtail, so I spliced on a pigtail from one of the donor mirrors, plus added the wires to the doors to support the heated mirrors. This basically meant removing all of the wiring from both front doors and replacing with that of the donor. The donor's wiring harnesses were all cut up because of bad stereo installations, however, I was able to use sections from both harnesses to make one good one for each front door.

It's all installed and the mirrors will be heated once the "slave" harness is done.

The door stoppers were also better on the donor.

Next up, wiring harness! Loom and electrical tape are in my future!

I also swapped over the door stay holder-opener-mabob to my drivers door while it was apart.

That reminded me that mine is worn and the door never stays open while I'm cleaning it in the drive way. Figured I would order a new one until I looked it up and Mr T wants $70 for it after discount! Just another of those little perks of having a parts vehicle!

Hmmm... let me finish up my swap here and see what's involved and we might just talk about it... It'll be much easier just doing a manual swap without the 4x4 swap part, hah.

Mini update.

New pedal covers. $5 each from Toyota. Part Number 31321-14020

I will only be doing some more wiring related stuff for the rest of this week. There's some grease leaking from both inner CV's at the outer clamp... I'm gonna watch it and see how it holds. If it doesn't stop leaking excess, it might need a tighter clamp... easy peasy

This morning, I installed the new hub covers.

It was very interesting to find that the donor did not come with a 4WD ECU 89533-35070... apparently, according to the wiring diagram, if the truck doesn't have push button 4WD with Hi/Lo selection, it doesn't get a 4WD ECU... it gets an ADD relay! hooray J-shifter...

I'm off to trace the 4WD fuse and find the ADD relay!

I'm bummed, someone rated my build thread down... ass!

Question.. why did you buy new hub covers? Did the donor not have them or were they bent up? Just wondering since your wheel caps cover them anyways.
