COB's 4Runner Timeline (Pic Heavy)

I'm in the midst of restoring a 1994 Supra turbo, and the 4Runner needs some love. The Supra is going to be the same color as the 4Runner, Imperial Jade Mica.

A woman driving a 2017 Highlander merged into my lane on a dual turn. This is the aftermath, her right quarter panel VS the shrockworks.

The rear end bushings are completely trashed, and Energy Suspension makes a rear control arm bushing kit # 8.3133R with 3 piece bushings. They're supposed to really be good at flexing.

I installed the bushings into an extra set of arms I had from my last parts truck. The reason I am using these, other than not having to take my truck apart, is because these arms are perfectly scratch and bend free, plus the uppers are slight shorter for 4WD models (I'm still running the 2WD upper links after all these years)

Upper link bushings burned and pushed out:

The lowers going together with help from a fancy new harbor freight 20 ton press.

Ready to install.

If you have any issues with your rear bushings, there is no better way. The truck is SOLID with these things! Next up, panhard bar. Also replaced the dipstick (I broke the handle off), but I didn't get pictures. I will get pics next oil change.

Everytime I check out your threads I find myself searching Supras on craigslist. Man I miss my Mk3.

I look forward to seeing your Mk4 finished up and restored to glory. The driveway shot is awesome too... a true Toyota enthusiast's house if I've ever seen one.

hey dude, nice to hear from you. Next up is more polyurethane bushings, a 4xinnovations R150F trans mount, and a new set of OEM motor mounts. After that will probably be exhaust.

I bet you get a sweeet deal on all those bushings. Good thing too with how many there are on these things. I've been looking at mine and most of them are pretty shot. How are you liking the poly body mounts?

Hey Frank. Long time no reply, sorry. Thank you, I am glad you feel that way! It's rare to hear that amongst all of these big dollar insta-lander rigs out there. 2WD 4Runners are awesome and have plenty of potential in them, if you have the drive!

Thanks BeardedUnicorn! The experiences with this rig taught me most everything I know about wrenching. It's not impossible to build the rig of your dreams, even if it is a 2WD.

4.56 ratio Yukons installed into the E-locker carrier.

The Truetrac LSD has given up the ghost... binding and popping... axle swap time!

I had planned to install my non-ABS axles into the E-locker axle, but the seal is very different, so I used the ABS axles with the larger 1" bore wheel cylinders (better brakes, I'll take em!)

Stainless brake line, extended

Installed with some Bilstein 5100s and all Energy Suspension bushings... also got longer end links for the rear, not pictured here yet

Extended diff breather line with a straight hose, no more bling bling yellow diff breather

Driveshaft rebalanced plus a new slip yolk

OE wiring from Donor 3.0 plus 4WD ECU.. OEM FTW!

I eliminated all of the extra wiring that was unnecessary and ran just the basic locker functions.

Toyota put a convenient little plug for those who didn't have ABS or e-locker.

Found some glass from the break in back in 2014.

Under the kick panel, I added the wires from the right plug into the left plug to follow all OEM wiring diagrams/specifications. Of course, the 5-mph speed limit wire and the 4-LO only wire have both been grounded.

OE locker button installed... I was SHOCKED to find that my 2WD 4Runner, which was not pre-wired for 4WD, was prewired for a LOCKER SWITCH! Even the light works!

This cluster light should have never been functional based on the specifications of this truck, nor should the 4WD light... 2WD Automatic cluster still in use! It makes me happy seeing the truck come to life The little chicken, Greg, has also been there for about 100k miles lol

Something inside of it failed, the guys at Eaton said it was likely that one of the springs that broke. It was binding, buckling, and making popping noises. They don't offer rebuilds and I had a locker axle on the side of my house.... while I miss the LSD on the road, the locker is practically cheating off road. I love it!

My 3rd gen has not been happy with me


It has been starting rough and then smoothing out


Lunch break at work, I pushed a low 4lbs of boost going to eat. The idle suddenly got much worse, the sweet smell of coolant wafting through the exhaust...

It doesn't want to exist, I think. Maybe its many cannibalized pieces are crying for attention, like Kenny, when he was trapped inside of Cartman

I shut it off and knew it would be unlikely it'd start back up... it had most definitely hydrolocked in the Panda Express parking lot where the most hardcore of engines are destined to die...



This was an OE head gasket, the head has never been removed, original to the truck... I was worried there were cracks in the head.



In the past 5k miles, I have done a rear end, front end, transmission, and a driveshaft... the truck must be haunted

but it is so dang purdy

So I shall gift it monies


Between a full time job, woman, dogs, Supras, MKIV resto, etc... I'm too busy to just pull this kind of stuff off (I don't work at this shop anymore) but I would never hesitate to let John at Japanese Car Specialties fix my Toyota.

So the head gasket blew in cylinder #1... thankfully that was all it was. No cracking of the head, all is well.

The guys at Precision Cylinder Head (they did my 7MGTE also) resurfaced the head plus a valve job.

Pulled the oil pan to remove the cork gasket and reseal with Permatex ultra-grey RTV.

New OE engine mounts

AC Evaporator line broke so that was replaced and AC recharged.

New heater valve since the old one was seizing.

All new gaskets from Toyota... removed the teflon isolator from the intake plenum side of the head and replaced it with OEM also.

Trying to get that 250k!

Weird, I didn't think the design even had springs, just a handful of Torsen gears. From my internet searches failures seem quite rare and lots of drag race guys use these carriers without issue.

There is a documented failure mode wherein the Grade 8 bolts holding the housing together can back out and then start to hit stuff while rotating. Eaton's countermeasure was to change them to a finer thread pitch.

Do you have any plans to take apart your TT to see what when wrong? Inquiring minds want to know

The 3rd LED brake lamp was faded pretty badly, cheap chinese made plastic...

Went back to the OEM housing, but rigged an LED board in there that will work for me.

Also installed some JDM clear corners, thank you to SIKHILUXSURF for finding them for me

That's just what the guys at the Eaton SEMA booth told me, I figured they knew better than anyone.



John from JCS also mentioned the importance of proper pinion preload, I had long suspected the condition of the metal crush sleeve installed by Jaws Gear back in 2010.


At this point, I'll probably rip it apart next time I need something out of it, but that may not be for a while. I will definitely post up the results if that happens.
