COB's 87 4Runner Turbo

Very small list of things left before smog:

  1. Install cat/catback from 3rd gen (temporary smog purposes only)
  2. Bleed brakes
Yesterday:


  1. Tracked down a coolant leak to the turbo coolant line (water pump side) seeping very lightly, tightened clamp.
  2. Tightened up the valve cover which was oddly loose and seeping some oil down the block
  3. Ran the wideband wiring through the cab and connected to oxygen sensor. Felt painful poking through that nice clean grommet.
  4. Adjusted idle (warm) to 750RPM. Properly cycles between open/closed loop.
Later today I will wire the wideband to power and make a temporary place to mount, for now it will be loose until I can get an A pillar gauge pod/boost gauge.

This is 100% fully warmed up idle temp. This is after letting it warm up, going for about 2 miles worth of driving, and then idle for about 5 minutes. The aluminum radiator keeps temps down very nicely.

A couple pics while it was out of the garage. I love looking at this truck! In stock shape, it's more aesthetically pleasing than it's plastic, huge-bodied 5th gen younger brother. 3rd gen + 1st gen = best gens. Now I just gotta get to finishing painting the plastic trim pieces (rear bumper ends, rear wheel well things, mirrors, and window frames)

Turbo 4Runners come with a dual diaphragm booster from the factory... lucky me. Scored this brand new OEM 1 1/16" master for $26!!

Hi COB. Looking good as always.

A few questions though: Why she had to be towed both ways? And why you didn't let the folks at the muffler shop deal with the rest of the piping? Still gonna use the old one?

The truck had terrible brakes, and is registered non operational, meaning a $1,000 fine and automatic impound if it gets pulled over. Towing was the safest option.

The rest of the piping will come after the brakes. Just need more money and time.
 
Progress is looking good! I'm glad you held on to it and didn't sell it.

It does make me a little sad though looking through the build... :moping:

Sad? I can bring it over and you can re-enact some of the awesome fab work you did :P Haha I'm so down for a road trip once this thing is going strong.

I have no doubt that you would make it one of the sickest 1st gens around. Who knows, maybe one day the urge for a Supra might get to me.

Finally received my 54mm socket. Huge is the only way to describe this thing. Only things left to order are front wheel bearings, inner and outer races, and a wheel bearing packer.

Nice i did the same thing last year. Except i also replace the TRE's, control arm bushings, etc.

I used this packing tool, decent price, fast shipping, works great EZ Squeeze Bearing Packers | Original E-Z Squeeze Bearing Packer Tool | A to Z Tool

You might also want to replace this seal

Thanks for the links! That's the packer tool I was looking at, someone was recommending it in a YouTube video. I'll have to pick one up. I made the order for the bearings today and got the seals as well.

Ordered Timken front wheel bearings, races, and 2 wheel seals. Just under $80 for everything.

Duralast FA5040 idler arm and 4Crawler bronze bushings coming their way, too. Also about $80 worth.

Had a little time to mess with it, figured I'd take off one side since I have the socket. The hardest part was getting the cone spacers to pop out. There was also a lot of silicone all over them, too.

Overall, it's not bad in there (to my surprise). Gotta do some extra cleaning and repainting before it all goes back together, it'll look pretty good.

There was a black widow living in there, he ran into one of the vents in the rotor and I never saw him again :spider:

Good progress. I've found a small propane torch to be a good solution to a black widow problem. I hate those suckers.

Going without the dust shields. They came off on the 3rd gen and I never looked back. Cleaned a ton of build up: bugs, webs, dirt, grime, etc.

Basically the whole truck looks pretty darn good underneath all of the dirt. The lower shock bushing was completely shifted away from the little metal tube that once ran through it.

Haven't really been on much lately. Good to see you're keeping it! I'd love to have a fully stock 1st gen. Hard to find these days. They're all lifted on 35's.
