COB's 87 4Runner Turbo

I encountered hub damage when I was attempting to remove the last of the four bearing races. The race was only able to come out about 1/2" before becoming lodged on several damaged spots where the wheel seal fits into.

I ordered a round file and rented a race/seal installer kit from AutoZone. I had to hammer the old race back into installed position, and file down the burr of the damaged spots. I followed up with 220 grit sandpaper to further smooth the edges.

The new Timken races are installed and properly seated inside the hubs.

Then cleaned up the locking part of the hub, still haven't painted the dials.

Tried to install my brakes and get the wheel bearings and all that installed

THE BRAKES WERE WRONG! Guys at Rock Auto send me brakes for a 3rd gen!

New CORRECT set on it's way with a prepaid shipping label to send the old ones back.

I was wondering why you bough S13WB brakes, i believe 1st gen's are S12's.
I thought you were doing a big-brake upgrade that i never heard of so i didn't mention it.

Now, if you want to do a BBU, order T100 calipers and rotors.

Sucks that you already painted them!
 
Actually, the calipers are the correct ones. They're S13WB. The 3rd gens come with S13WM calipers. They problem was that the rotors and pads I ordered were listed for a 95, but they were actually for a 96+. Powerstop gave Rock Auto the wrong year range, so this was purely a mistake on Rock Auto and Powerstops part.

The calipers are from a '95, they're still going on the truck.

Cool! He did that same mod on his 3rd gen from what I remember, except there was a bunch of washers for spacing out the caliper... aside from that it looked good. I'll take a peek at the 1st gen one though. Wonder how many vented rotor options there are, I think I remember the montero rotor not being vented. Thanks for the tip.

Still waiting for brakes to come in... today I had a little time to get some things done. Starting to get pretty antsy waiting... I want to drive this thing already!

Removed the steering stabilizer, but the tie rod end side broke clean off. BFH doesn't really fit... looks like it's time for a pickle fork.

Installed front shocks. One of them didn't have the bushings so I just improvised with some extra Energy Suspension polyurethane end link bushings on both sides. I was short 2 bushings from the full set anyway, so this seemed like a reasonable use for them. To replace them, I ordered a 23mm sway bar and endlink bushing kit from EnergySuspensionParts.com.

Flare nut wrench also came in the mail, was able to remove the calipers without rounding the nut edges any more than they already were.

Have you picked up a new set of steering stop bushings? I bought these 86 95 Toyota Pickup 4 Runner All T100 Steering Stops New Design | eBay and i would highly recommend them (OEM type ones wear out very quickly)

I haven't thought of replacing those really, will it make a large difference? I haven't daily driven the truck yet so I don't know how much of a difference to expect from such a small part. I could always add them, I suppose.



Brakes came in yesterday! Same with new sway bar bushings. Will get on it monday!

I got a pickle fork and took care of the broken steering stabilizer. This picture means victory!

The steering stops have a habit of rubbing on eachother, especially at full lock and in reverse, and the first time it happens you'll think you just ripped half your truck off the frame. It's a horrible horrible noise.

I used to just slap some grease on the stops once a month or so, but if those new stop covers Greg has last more than six months at a time they might be worth looking into.
 
Seriously, if I was driving down the road and saw your car I would pop total bonage.

What would you say has taken the most time so far with this project?

They will last alot longer than the original stops, and if they wear down, you just have to turn them a 1/4 turn. They are made of a much more durable material.
And yep, that's basically what it sounds like :violin:LOL

Haha well thanks for the bonage compliment. I'd have to say installing the new engine was the most time consuming task.
