Lets get this show off the road and on the lift.

The hood is off and set atop the roof on some foam.

Coils removed

PCV hoses, bypass valve, serpentine tensioner, radiator, fan, and valve covers removed. Looks like previous owners didn't pay enough attention to the oil change intervals.

Timing belt covers and crank pulley removed

Timing belt tensioner out. Auto cooler lines have some zip-tie action going on. Of course, soon there will be no need for anything auto trans related

Fluidyne radiator sits beside the car for the first time in many years.

Camshafts and water pump removed.

These are headed for the parts cleaner.

That's all for today. Lots of cleaning and parts replacing in store for tomorrow.

The photos are going to be limited more than I'd prefer to provide, for now. My only camera takes blurry images no matter what, otherwise there would be more photos of the stem seals going in, plus the camshafts going in and out for the valve adjustment. I actually borrowed two other phones just to get the photos for this post.

This manual valve spring compressor tool is interesting. The valve stem job took a few hours. Centering can be an annoying issue when trying to get the keepers back in, but we had a few extra tools. John owns a lathe, he rigged up a plastic bucket with a center hole big enough to keep the spring and retainer centered and slide the keepers in. He used a 90 degree bent metal tube with a rubber tip that holds the keepers, slide over the stem and listen for two clicks. The goop showing is petroleum jelly. The difference in strength between OEM springs and Brian Crower springs is definitely noticeable.

A leak down tester was used to keep the valves up. The motor has about 15% leakage across the board, which is good.

Was not able to get a picture of the first fitting of the camshafts, but the valve adjustment was completed using a variety of new shims. Valve clearance is now .012" Intake and .014" Exhaust.

Brand new AISIN pump installed. PHR pulley bracket with Koyo idler installed. Crankshaft seal has been installed.

Valve covers, camshaft caps, timing covers, cam gear rear cover, and cam gears all cleaned up in the parts washer.

Tomorrow I will have some more time for reassembly, hopefully enough to get it driving

Nah, I don't own the tools to do this job. Lifts and proper tools are nice! Plus my stands are all under the parts truck so I'd never be able to get under the car.

Only downside is that I can't work on it at night

There's still a few shims coming from Toyota for a few of the valves. Until then, can't button up the valve covers and such. I should have taken the valve covers and painted them over the weekend, now that I think about it. Maybe monday.

Here's the few pictures from today.

NTN tensioner installed

GSC S1 camshafts installed with cleaned up caps. New cam seals installed. Cam gear plate cleaned up and installed. Cam gears back on. Gates timing belt T215RB installed.

Crank pulley and lower timing cover back on. Koyo serpentine belt tensioner installed.

Last for now, the hooks for the hood hinges. These are what grab the hood and keep it from entering the cabin during a frontal collision.

Once the shims come in on Monday, the rest will be finished up and will be ready to hit the road, then have some more boost thrown at it

OEM bypass valve with new OEM hoses

New serpentine belt

PCV Valve grommet installed in valve cover

Filled up with coolant and ready for the new PCV hoses and valve covers.

Valve covers installed with new gaskets. Pain in the ass pipe reinstalled (if you've ever taken off the valve covers on a 2JZGTE, you know what pipe I mean). Shiny new pliable PCV hoses.

Throttle body is nice and clean.

And it starts!

Back together plus TRD strut bar. The car has been a blast to drive, it pulls harder than ever. Manual boost controller installed next to air filter, set to 15 PSI. I will increase the boost to 17PSI when the wideband is ready to go.

Lotek A pillar pod with Autometer boost and Innovate MTX-L wideband. O2 sensor + bung not installed yet so that's why E2 is showing on the wideband.

Pulled up the passenger side carpet and removed the ECU cover. There's already a Greddy Boost cut controller! How lucky is that? Now I have to return the one I bought.

A friend and I put the Supra against a new 2017 MBZ SL400 3.0L V6 twin turbo with 7-speed auto (329hp, 354tq, 3830lbs). The SL took off faster from a dead stop, then maintained about a 1-2 car lead. From a rolling start at 20mph, both cars stayed neck and neck, neither pulling ahead. From another rolling start at 30mph, the Supra gained about 1 car length.

We are going to try again when the Supra has a manual transmission.

The lack of updates could just be me not doing anything to it! lol. Hard to drive a car that has such low miles, every mile counts. Plenty of cars to distribute miles between.

2 colors is also better than broken in the drive way waiting for revival lol.

As far as mileage is concerned I saw an interesting quote a few weeks ago that I 150% agree with. "Not driving a car to keep the mileage low is like not sleeping with your girl to keep her tight for the next guy" (sorry if that's not family friendly enough for this forum. Can't remember how strict T4R is for that. Will take down if needed) I do agree its nice to see a cool car with low miles, but at the same time I think its a waste to have a car and not enjoy it. The whole reason these things exist is to be driven! Personally, I feel like its also more of an achievement to have a car running smoothly with hundreds of thousands of miles on it than it is to have one with low mileage. Anyone can buy a car and stick it in a garage, not many can keep a car running that long. Pretty sure you could though lol

I'm not planning to sell this one anymore. It's my first time having a somewhat low mileage car, seeing the low miles on the ODO gives me a smile With the cams and boost turned up, it gets a workout each time I take it out, but I'm in no hurry to catch up. With 3 other cars that need driving, I try to switch cars as often as possible.

87 4Runner has 9k on the rebuilt motor, 279k on chassis.
89 Supra has 700mi on the rebuilt motor, 130,700 on chassis.
94 Supra has 64600 on entire car
99 4Runner has 236k on motor/chassis, 40k since the 4wd/5speed swap.

It'll be a while before I catch up with the 3rd gen, I'm barely at 237k.

Got an AC line to replace the bent one that came with the car.

It showed up bent also, but my friend John bent it back with a vise and a small hammer.

Front bumper retainer... again the other one flew off. This ones secured with nuts and clips

Both seats are missing the recliner handles. I got a passenger one from the US, but the driver side was discontinued. There was a surplus one in a warehouse in Japan somewhere, thankfully I got one of the last few left. Driver side is still on the way. Installed with 2 new screws each.

The rear hatch has been making some squeaking noises lately. It's definitely been exacerbated by the new camshafts vibrating the shit out of the car. I read up on the rubber stops going bad and had a look at mine. Both top ones were entirely missing, and the bottom ones were rotted and cracked.

The kicker was the screws holding on the passenger lower rubber bumper. They were stripped by someone in the past (not me, I promise). I had to rip the rubber apart and grab the screw with a vice grip, turning it ever so slightly until it came out. It was miserable, but I had a new set of stainless screws to replace them.

Top bumpers for the hatch side.

I had some cans of SEM trim black left over from past projects, just enough to repaint the wipers. First I sanded them with 220 grit, then moved up to 400 to smooth them out.

The cowl needs to be replaced because of the damage near the hood hinges.

I love your GenIV Supra!! The time and attention to detail is really awesome! I wish I had the time and patience (and Money!) to do what you've done! You also seem to snag the gems! The only Gen IV's I see up here in BC, Canada are from Japan! And yes, there are very few of them. I suppose Toyota didn't import them to Canada, possibly. Anyways, I love your 99' 4R, however, I was blown away by the Classic 4R, the whole story about saving it from the junk yard etc... wow!!! I was truly enraptured! Now the Supra! Please keep us up to date! Thanks!

Thanks poleclimber!! Funny how the builds worked out. So many of my friends are the types who plan things to a tee, so if it's not planned, it's not happening. I get bored of that quickly, so it's nice to have fun with life's opportunities, the supra and red truck are good examples of that. By far, the majority of my friends didn't like my red truck at first. I've been slacking on the updates though, that patience and time isn't always around

I always assumed that Canada would have LHD models, if they didn't import them new, that would certainly be odd. I can see it happening though! Sure glad mine is LHD because RHD would drive me insane!

The 97 Corolla is a great first car, I'm sure your son will appreciate the effort you've put into fixing it up.

Thanks again. More cars?! Haha, I'd be bankrupt! Life just got in the way a bit. The past 6 months have left me with more obligations and duties than time.

The Supra also had to step aside for the 3rd gen 4Runner to get some love. It's not easy being green. Next up is the red truck. Maybe after that, more Supra time, if the other Supra doesn't steal my attention.
