I cut the OEM brackets with a Dremel tool and removed the middle part. I'll see if I can find the pics.

I just changed my dash speakers to the JBL GX302 3.5 speakers. It made a huge difference! I'm really impressed. I haven't heard the Kappas so I can't compare the two, but I'm really happy with the improved sound from just swapping to the GX302 speakers.

I took the factory mounting brackets and cut the tabs and speaker screw holes off with my Dremel and used the tabs to mount the speakers again. Worked well.

Wiring was that plug & play or did you have to cut & crimp on some female connectors?

Cut and crimp and solder if you want to use the stock speaker connector. I just installed the speakers and it makes a huge difference.

Another workaround which uses the factory wiring harness (and removes the stock capacitor) is on page 11 of this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...le-difference-kappa-3-5-dash-speakers-11.html

It sounds tough, but is not. It works great and is entry level soldering. Have fun, the 3.5"a do make the most difference. [emoji106]

If i had the money I'd go that route too.

Once you get into custom amps, speakers and enclosures you need the know how and tuning. Tuning, tuning, tuning. OEM+ comes pre tuned. Let us know how it sounds.

I am looking to replace my dash speakers to improve the sound quality. I removed the factory dash speakers and I see only two wires on the plug.
Most of the folks here mention there are four wires.
Can you please suggest how should I be wiring up my 3.5" speakers for the dash?

I still don't know for the life of me how people got the passenger side to fit... on my 4runner the driver's side has a noticeably larger area for the dash speaker vs the passenger. There is an air vent tube in the passenger side and it sits higher too, at least on mine. I could not get any combination of dremeled OEM brackets/angling of speaker to work so I ended up zip tying one attachment. Has been on for over a year now no issues... good enough for government work...

I second that! not amount of trimmed bracket would fit tonight. I got the outside attachment point snug and the inside still out floating. I will go back in and secure.

I actually went back and tried to do it again. I don't know how much cursing went on but no way in Hell without some custom fab brackets do they fit. So I got them zip tied in AGAIN. Orange color to match the JBL GX tweeter. Lol. been that way for many thousands of miles....

It's thin enough to bend easily. Use that and a nylock+screw and you should be good.

Mending plates worked for me

Wish I had taken pictures, but I bought some mending plates from Home Depot, used the Dremel to trim them, and it worked more easily than I thought it would. I'm certainly no craftsman -- but a little OCD -- and I was able to get it in there, with a little foam and rubber to keep the edges of the speaker from touching metal to metal.

A little rounding of the mending plate and it supported the speaker just fine without having any sharp edges. Sorry -- wish I had taken photos when I did it. Just dive in and it'll work. Admittedly, though, it was a tight fit on the passenger side.

You only need 2 wires, positive and negative, the 4 wires is from the TacoTunes wire adapter. You should be able to wire in a speaker with just the 2 wires no problem.
