did the village idiot design our engines?

For starters... We have just purchased a 90' v6 4runner with about 150,000 miles on this engine (or so the PO says) we noticed we were getting 10-12 mpg in town and the exhaust smells rich, so we decide to pull the codes. we are getting an "52 knock sensor" error.

Here are my questions...

1)What would posess someone to place the knock sensor under the intake manifold?
2)how long will it take to replace it?
3)what else will i need to replace when i am in there?
4)What will happen if i dont fix it?
5) what should a shop charge to do this work?

why cant engineers place things where a comman weekend worker can get to them? why do they need to make things so damn difficult.?

for a engine that will run 500,000 miles i would say that "village Idiot" did a good job.

I just finished tearing down a 3.0 to the short block today, first time. Your sentiments about Toyota engineers where the same here. Don't kid yourself, this is a big job and to top it off, the knock sensor is expensive. If you do the sensor, you may as well do the timing belt, water pump and head gaskets. Yes, that is just about how far you have to go to replace the sensor. Have no idea what happens if you leave it.

As an FYI, I tried to post a question earlier with pictures of my short block with the knock sensor dead in the middle of the picture. Will try to attach to this post so you can see it.
