DIY: Interior LED swap (cluster, HVAC, switches, window, *steering wheel)

I just finished my LED Swap from Orange to White. Here are my notes to help the next fella! I will try and rank in the most confusing (to me) to the least.

  • I have the Sport Edition, for us the needle backlight is the backlight for the rest of the gauge. For instance, there are three LED's surrounding the needle for the Speedometer. The way that the light is dispersed it also provides the backlight for the numbers (aka perimeter). Limited gauge has separate LED's going around the perimeter.
  • I used 12 white PLCC-2 from oznium. I ordered 26 because I couldn't find a straight answer on this thread about how many I would need.
  • Don't forget to take a picture of the needles for reference on reassembly.
  • I had to have my Weller soldering iron on highest setting (5) to use the Solder Wick to remove the stock LED's. I found the trick is to hold it just a second longer than you think you need to. No longer than 6 seconds or so. Other than that lift up one side as suggested. DONT FORGET to turn your iron down (I chose level 3) when soldering new LED's on! You only need a insy tiny bit of solder on the new LED's as well
  • I used a flathead style tip that came with the iron to remove stock LED, and then used a ST7 Weller tip when soldering the new LED on.
  • I used Q-Tips and a little Isopropyl alcohol (70%) afterwards to clean up some gunk.
  • When you're finished solder
  • Swap Time (not including dissassembly/reassembly): 4 hours.

Question: I believe it's normal due to some energy stored in capacitors on the PCB but did anyone else have the LED's flash when desoldering? Thought that was strange. I guess the wick was make the electrical connections. I was worried that I was going to short the board.

As for the HVAC controls and a few other push buttons install was straightforward:
1) Remove the old bulb
2) Guess the direction of LED. Insert new NEO LED. The sizing is obvious. See shopping list below.
3) Install in vehicle and turn lights on. Figure out which ones did not light up then go back and remove them and flip them around. LED's are diodes, they won't allow current in the wrong direction. Just flip em around to get them working.

It's either the DAC or the Center Diff switch, it required trimming of the NEO-3W LED. It doesn't go all the way into the slot because of the length of the LED lens. I just ghetto rigged it by grabbing a steak knife and sawed off the lens to the shortest I could without getting near the metal part of the LED itself.

Install time: 25 minutes.

*I replaced all Orange LED's with White except for the Low Fuel.
*Notice the lack of "perimeter" LED's on the non-Limited edition.

I also switched out the HVAC controls and miscellaneous switches with the NEO-3's and NEO-4's. It was a simple guessing plug-n-play game.

Lastly my shopping list:

Weller soldering iron (Amazon)
Weller ST7 Extra Tip (Amazon)
Desoldering Wick (Amazon)
Tip Cleaner (Amazon)
Soldering Resin (Slow shipping on Amazon)

PLCC-2 White
(Oznium)
*I ordered 30 for $23, only ended up needing 12

NEO3-W 3mm NEO3-x Cool White
Qty: 11 (used 8)
NEO4-W 4mm NEO4-x Cool White
Qty: 5 (used 3)
74-W Cool White
Qty: 2 (used 1)
Total: $26

So in total I spent $50 on LED's (more than I needed to). And the soldering stuff was an investment since I will use it on other projects (such as ongoing headunit install).

Quick question. So the Instrument cluster doesn't have any of those twist in led bulbs like the ones found on the back of climate control? Are the lights for the speedo etc. all soldered on?

thanks for any input.

They are all soldered on.

Thanks for the prompt reply .

Tonight , when it was dark and cold out. I decided to go out and take out my climate control out since the one of the bulbs was burnt. While doing that I thought I would take the colored rubber caps off the lights and dip them a few times in some VHT Nightshades red tint .

This was following a full day working on the truck I just couldn't stop haha !

I was really impressed with the results ! So as it sits now , only my climate control is red. As for the cluster, i'll have to do something different with that.

What other bulbs are the twist off kind where take out and pop back in?

Short of the dome lights, map lights, door lights, and license plate lights not much as far as the instrument cluster is concerned.

Anyone near Louisiana that can take this task on for me? It is a daily driver so being with out a cluster could be dangerous for me.

Thanks for all the great info I have received from some of you guys on other projects. I installed a Kenwood DNX890HD, Map light mod and placed 12v Dual usb ports in the rear door pockets. I also installed an additional 12v socket in my console with the help of everyone here.

I also have the DNX890HD. I was thinking about running the video/left/right auxiliary to three RCA jacks in the center console

Do you have a picture of the dual USB in the rear pocket and the additional 12v you installed:fro:

This was very easy to do.

It has a cover to keep things from falling in it I took out the plug so you could see it.

Wayy badass qtip! Where are you running your 12 volts too? I def will be looking into this. From the research that you've done what 12 volt outlet did you decide to go with there are millions of them

My kids were always wanting my charger from the front and I hate Cords across the vehicle so I used These and they worked great. I cannot take credit for the idea I got it from here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/140810-diy-12volt-socket-outlet-your-door-panels-2.html

I did buy inline fuses to use in these but did not install them. I have used an ipad, ipad mini and iphones in them with no issues. I used wire taps and connected to the white wire for the hot and the green with silver dots and white stripe as the ground. I used this thread to figure out how to remove the door panels. here To remove the handle from the door it is just one screw on the back side and the handle slides out of the door panel. I did have someone help hold it up while I put it back together.

Same size 4mm bulbs on both sides?

Where did you get the bulbs from? It could be an issue with your HVAC itself.

What year is it?

How did the contact pads look on the board when you swapped the bulb out? Any corrosion or scratching that could cause resistance or block some flow?

Thanks for bumping this thread up I've been searching for it. I did this same type of mod to my CBR. Love the outcome, its added to my to-do list for the 4runner.
