DIY: Interior LED swap (cluster, HVAC, switches, window, *steering wheel)

Well I got the HVAC LCD to light up evenly, but it's not very bright.

Then I started thinking about it, what made it light up orange with the bulbs?
The bulbs didn't have any rubbers on them, so it's not from that. So is there something on the LCD that made it light up orange with the bulbs? I wonder if that's what causing it to not light up so bright with the white LEDs I used?

What type of LED's are you using?

I had the same problem, Then took out the 1.2k resistors and put in 470's. After doing a quick calculation with the LED's I bought off Ebay, 470-500 ohm resistors is what works perfect.

Every LED's tolerance of voltage is different, So get a resistor calculated for the LED's you buy.

I might do that when I get the confidence to did into the dash. mind you I kinda have to dig into the ecu for the apr x-1. I might go for blue!

Has anyone tried the steering wheel controls? I looked quickly behind one of the panels and did not see anything quick (I could be wrong)

Yeah if you have basic soldering skills, you should be ok. Post pics when you do. I think you'll be the 2nd 4Runner with blue lights (1st goes to SlvrAZtaco)

I did. it uses the same surface LED's as the gauge cluster. the left side uses 3 LED's. i don't have the right side so i can't tell you how many that one needs. I didn't document the How-to since SlvrAZtaco did a great job.

I do it in that color!! the bright blue and red looks so good! I can solder but the last time I did that was in middle school. I'll do it this next week after finals! what brand do you recommend? I'm now just getting into the HID and LED stuff in my 06

This is one of the most impressive write-ups/ ideas that i have seen for an upgrade. I would love to do this for mine, i just think it would be a little too complicated for me.

All in all it looks great - much cleaner appearance than stock. Good Job!

i got mine from oznium. They work pretty well. The 3MM LEDs i just got off of ebay. I love my HIDs. Have them in my low and fogs. when it gets warmer, i'm going to retrofit my LF's with HIDs (have the kits and adapters sitting in my garage). Good Luck!!

Thanks!! best thing to do is practice with the soldering iron on old boards (desoldering and soldering components). you'll see that as long as you take your time, it's really not that bad.

I would suspect the answer is no, but I'll ask anyway. If you replace the lights for the AC panel with LEDS, do they still dim with the rest of the dash?

The answer is yes. after the swap, all LED's work the same way as the bulbs it replaces. dimmer included.

i did dome lights, map lights, door lights, and did the mpg and climate control screen hold on let me get the packages i kept

-3610-B4 festoon bulbs for the dome lights (blue)
-WLED-B Wedge base bulbs for the doors (blue)
-WLED-W Wedge base bulbs for map lights (white)

the wedge base bulbs are also the same for the liscense plate lights which i am about to order as well

let me know when you install your license plate lights - i got some from v-led.com and they were not bright enough at all.

to tell u the truth i dont really care if they arent bright at all because i already have a tinted cover over my plate and in SC it doesnt really matter. i see ppl with the lights burned out on their license plate all the time. cops just dont want to waste their time stopping someone because some license plate bulbs are out ha

I know this may be a little late, but these type of bulbs will fit and work well with the HVAC unit since the light spread seems to be out the top but they might seem a bit dim for the switches. I initially tried the premade ones and it just didn't match the brightness of everything else.
