DRL Disable but keep Auto Headlights

When this mod is done to disable DRL's, auto headlight function still works from what I understand. When the auto function activates, what is turned on? Low beams? Or the dimmed high beams like the DRL's are?

The low beams will activate when it starts to get dark. The only thing the mod does is disable the DRL function. The regular headlights will operate normally.

Cool! I have installed LED high beams that do not dim when in DRL mode. This should fix it.

Just a small item to mention, the relay in my fuse box is green not grey. Same shape and location. Maybe the 2015's are green plastic? Or maybe it's a Canadian thing.

Now what I'd really like is to actually convert my fog lights back to work as DRL's, which they did before the mod. From the pic above you can see they are in "DRL mode" when the high beams are on. Mostly because my wife has never owned a vehicle without auto headlights and forgets to turn the headlights on in the city when it's evening time.

The dealership installed the fog lights before I purchased the truck. So I will need to investigate how they wired them. Before modifying my relay, the Fogs came on in "low mode" with the drl's. Now, after modifying the DRL pin in the relay, they don't come on at all. The fogs are controlled with the factory headlight stalk on the column. I can only turn the fog lights into "high mode" when low beams are on (haven't done the Antman mod). When I switch to high beams the fogs automatically go into "low mode".
I'm thinking that my relay has a different part number because my SR5 does not have auto headlights?

I traced where the fog light DRL wire tapped into the high beam plug green/black wire. I figure if I switch this wire to a power source controlled by the ignition I should be able to have DRL function of the fogs work a normal.
Any ideas where a good power source could be near the front of the engine compartment?

Well, I got this part figured out and I thought I'd post my solution here if anyone wants to do the same, after doing the DRL headlight disable mod. Useful, if your changing to non-dimmable LED high beams, and still want your DRL compatible fog lights to operate in DRL mode. Another nice feature with this solution, is the DRL fogs retain the original time delay off function when the vehicle is turned off.

My fog lights have two wires (I assume all DRL compatable fog lights would), one that plugs into the factory fog light harness for normal operation, and one wire that was tapped into the high beam bulb connector green/black wire. I removed this wire from the headlight connector. Then I located a power source that had the same voltage that is controlled by the key on/off. There is a power distribution block just behind the fuse panel box.

The red/black wire, 2nd from the left, is the one you want to tap into. This wire is controlled by the key, and when you turn off the vehicle the wire holds power for about 60 seconds and then turns off.

I just want to be clear. The red and black wire connector we see in the picture to the left is the power source you tapped into? And just the red wire correct? Since the black is just a ground. That (Red) wire comes on when ignition is on and turns off 60 seconds after the vehicle is turned off?

Hi all, I love the simplicity of this mod and was wondering without complicating it much is it possible to A) do this to disable the highbeam/DRL but also allow the DRL switch on the stalk to control another form of DRL? Such as turning a LED strip on and off? Thanks for any help! I'm currently away from home just planning out mods I would like to do ound:

So I've been brain storming the past few days, say you bend the pin to avoid the high beam being powered, could you wedge a wire into where the pin would have been and use that as a signal wire for another relay? Would't that just take the low voltage to the relay and turn on whatever it was hooked up to?

I was really hoping to bypass the factory DRL, put LEDs in for the high beams, and run some other form of LED strips as DRL. That would be fantastic! If the weather plays nice this weekend i might try it out!

Personally, I would not do what you are trying to do with inserting a wire into the place of the relay pin that has been bent out of the way. (Also, once the wire has been inserted, you will not be able to insert the relay back into place)
You may risk damaging (or worse) your harness and/or ECU or electrical system.


Suggestion:

Do the DRL disable mod, then...
Why not purchase a switch from AOB 12 Volt 3amp ON-OFF Toyota OEM Replacement Push Switch with LED blue lights -Air On Board, a harness, relay and tie them to a circuit that is on only when the switch is on?
You would have complete control over your DRL that you have replaced with your LED strips.
You will have a factory looking switch (in whatever color you choose that is in stock) and place it in one of the blank inserts on your dash.
You can still purchase quality LED's for your Hi Beam, like some DDM LED Sabre's and achieve the same thing.

Does any one know if it's possible to switch the DRL and parking wires at column so the column switch controlling DRL's instead controls parking, and vice versa? Same concept, parking lights go on without DRL's in DRL position, and both go on in parking position.
