I'd say you did the right thing. Hard to tell from the video, but it seems to stay at 'jet roar' way too long and it will not spin freely when cold, but it should go a few inches at least after you let go, not stop right away.

I could turn both by hand. The biggest difference is when the motor is warmed up to operating temp there is no roar past 1900-2000 rpm. I suggest accelerate from dead stop at about half throttle. Once the motor gets to those 2000 rpms in first or second gear, there shouldn't be any roar, just exhaust and intake noise.
There are probably dozens of 4runners for sale in your area. Go test drive one if you can't compare. I went and ahead and changed mine because I don't like the thought of 14 year old plastic fan blades wreaking havoc under the hood.

I compared it to my Dad's Tacoma; definitely think it was locking up too much. I went ahead and ordered a new OEM Aisin Unit from Amazon yesterday. It will be here tomorrow

The Fan Clutch arrived today. I'm happy to say that the fan roar is GONE
Easy Install.
All you need is:
New Fan Clutch - Aisin Part Number FCT-013
12mm Wrench
10mm socket
Box Cutter (to open your goodies, duh!)
Door Panel Clip Puller (Something Small to Pry with)
I Also picked up a New OEM Toyota Oil Filter in the process, so I can get this oil changed.
Take the 4 Fan Bolts off with you 12mm Wrench. They should be pretty easy to break loose; They are not torqued on with much gusto. Remove the fan to the driver's side of the engine bay, you may have to bend on the blades slightly to pull it out.
I had to slightly pry on the Assembly to get it pulled off. I took a Door Panel Clip puller and put it on the hub of the fan clutch and used it to pry off.
You will have this..
Now, Remove the 4 10mm bolts that hold the fan to the Fan Clutch.
At this point, I took the Fan inside and Cleaned it up. I took a scrub brush and some steaming hot water and just scrubbed the blades and got all of the crud and grime out of the inside of the hub where the fan clutch mounts.
Now, I used a very small dab of Anti-Sieze doing this; It is time to install the new fan clutch in the fan. These don't need to be torqued on much, just good and tight!
Now, it's time to reinstall!!!
Work the fan back in there the same way you took it out, reinstall the 12mm nuts(again, I used just a small dab of anti seize here as well. Tighten the nuts to where they are good and tight, compare to how tight they were when you disassembled.
Now, ENJOY Your quiet fan!!!! The fan will be loud when you first start it, and then it gets quieter. After the initial startup, the fan should be so quiet that you don't hear it Yay! for a vehicle that doesn't sound like a turbine is under the hood!
Here is how the fan will spin when it is properly working. You can give the fan a good spin and it will turn a little bit before it stops.

Here is how man fan spun before, as you can see, the fan clutch was giving too much resistance. you can give it a good spin and it basically stops instantly.

Hopefully this helps some of you!! I know I see and hear WAY too many Toyota's running around with Loud fans. This will make the ride much more pleasurable and also help a bit with your Gas mileage!

Sorry guys reviving an old thread. I bought a new to me 02 and I had an overheating issue. I ended up changing the rad, rad cap, hoses, tstat, coolant, and installed a tranny cooler. So far it hasnt overheated but gauge shows it sits exactly half way which worries me cause my 97 is slightly under the half way point.
The engine bay is super dirty. Previous owner went mudding and never cleaned it up so i need to pressure wash it but im suspecting the fan clutch to be bad. It actually doesnt seem to have the "jet roar" sound and seems to be idling slightly higher than my 97 after its been warmed up which leads me to believe it may be starting to lock up.
Right now it only costs 89 on amazon so its cheap enough to replace but any input would be of great help!

These are symptoms of a fan clutch that is not engaging when it should, not one that is locked uo. How are you measuring your temps? Since you are not actually over heating, it's hard to be sure. I'd get a live scanner, maybe a Blurtooth adapter with the Torque app, and find some stop and go traffic and watch the temps with the A/c on. A bad FC will spike pretty dramatically. The dash gauges are a really lame way to measure temps. Your engine can be ready to melt down before that thing hits the red.
You live in CA so finding traffic should be easy.

Thanks for the quick response. Talked to scrunner12 and he mentioned the same thing. Ill be ordering a bluetooth odb adapter and dashcommand to my headunit to monitor temps. Most likely ill be getting the fan clutch since its so cheap; cheap insurance rather than buying a new motor haha.

Ive read into that and as always there are pros and cons. Negative side is that it draws too much electrical power so youll need to upgrade your alternator etc. for myself i figured id go with the cheaper route and went with oem parts since thats how toyota engineers designed it.

Excellent how to replace clutch fan instructions! Its an old post but a goodie.
I just realized by listening to the 'before' video above that my current one with 272k miles is just like that one. Thinking of replacing it, here is why.
I recently noticed when ambient temps are hot (100+) while idling with a/c on engine temps slowly climb (15-20 mins) from 190-194 to 208. Within a short block of driving off the temps drop back under 200 then back to 194 or so. Would a worn fan clutch that acts just like the 'before' video above account for this? Should I go Hayden for $36 or Aisin for $94? I know don't go cheap....

If you know not to go cheap then don't. Spend the money wisely for the Aisin.

The fan clutch can fail in different ways, (e.g., usually freeze up or the opposite free-wheel). Regardless of what the fan sounds like — the coolant temps rising while at idle with a/c on and then dropping back to normal when driving, says to me that the fan clutch is indeed failing. My truck behaved exactly the same way prior to replacing the clutch with another Aisin one.
Interestingly, my original clutch passed every test perfectly. I would never have suspected the clutch was failing had I relied upon those test. Only the ScanGauge allowed me see what the coolant temps were doing — which gave me the opportunity to fix it before it became a problem.
Spend the $100 for an Aisin clutch and don't worry about the clutch for another 275k.

Bought the aisin after reading your post, 100$, and cooling system is not something to mess with. That was part of preventive maintenance with radiator replacement/ball joints/transmission oil etc..
Never aftermarket fan clutch
I once had to buy an aftermarket fan clutch, cost almost the price of an OEM! That was so LOUD from very first turn it spins until I shut down the engine. Then got a low mile OEM fan clutch from a truck I parted out. It sounds loud for the first 2-3 minutes and then becomes so silent.

I dont do alot of posting here but I do a lil reading from time to time. My 01 4Runner has 257k on it now and has been VERY reliable. I knew that my fan clutch as sounded louder and louder over the last year or so. When this thread popped up, I said to myself that I should go out and check my fan clutch. What do you you know. Locked up. I checked with my local auto parts stores and they only place that had one was O'reilly auto parts. I took my stocker in there to compare to make sure they were selling me the right part. I wasnt able to get the exact factory replacement but the fan clutch says, Made in the USA. Good enough for me. I installed it and I am really glad I did. Now while driving it is soooooo much more quiet. If you think your fan clutch is loud it probably needs to be replaced too. Good luck

The fan on my truck with the old clutch sound like the "bad one" in your videos, Swapped it out for a new Aisin clutch and it still doesn't spin freely. Difference is my truck is way quieter 90 seconds after turning it on.
