285's on stockers here with no issues, been almost 4 years and tire wear is perfect.
It's clearly not a problem.... when you are within .5.... but the big chain tire shops don't always see it that way.285's on stockers here with no issues, been almost 4 years and tire wear is perfect.

if you have bypass shocks in the front, you have literally lit money on fire. i don't care what you think - its not possible for you to develop shock fade to a noticeable extent with the amount of travel available in the front end with remote reservoir shocks.
it's a liability. i won't do things requested by customers if it's outside of specs. 99.9% it'll be fine, sure, but that's not what matters. it's that one time the tire unseats. It's clearly not a problem.... when you are within .5.... but the big chain tire shops don't always see it that way.
We used to mount 315's on dually wheels that were 6" wide all day. The worst problem I saw was uneven tire wear ( center tread was wearing faster). I always wanted to section one open and see how curled that bead was though. I personally had a few trucks with 285's on 7" wheels and one with 315's on a 7.5" wheel. Never had an issue. Where is 1engineer when we need him?!

funny, this is exactly what i was thinking while watching that video of the "mechanic" who found "major design problems" with the 4Runner Limited in the course of he and his co-pilot pal beating the crap out of its 4WD system on dry pavement. (i laughed so hard at the insipid co-pilot's parroting the driver: "no brake" ... "too much friction", etc.)Where else can you you sue someone for spilling hot coffee on yourself? Many people have a chip on their shoulder and think that it is ALWAYS someone else's fault. Never their own.
My opinion? I personally would run them all day long if I wanted.
rant on:
35 years ago if I owned a tire shop I would have had no problem mounting wide tires and narrow rims. I WAS one of those customers. I would just explain the manufacturer does not recommend it and you are on your own.
Today if I owned a tire shop I would NEVER mount a wide tire on narrow rim. Why? Because 35 years ago people accepted responsibility for their own actions. Now? We have a bunch of whiners (from my and current generation) who think nothing is ever their fault and sue people for fun and entertainment. Apparently the people from my generation who got picked last in gym class and were the prime target in dodge ball games decided that if they were going to be miserable in life they were going to make everyone else miserable too. Now we have one of the most F'd up societies America has ever had. Where else can you you sue someone for spilling hot coffee on yourself? Many people have a chip on their shoulder and think that it is ALWAYS someone else's fault. Never their own. And that kids is why you see all these butt hurt people making decisions. What's worse is we decided to elect some of them to congress and senate! Now we have CAFE, CARB and everything else because these people who....

Second point: You're saying if you want a LT rear all you need are longer shocks and springs? No upgraded links or panhard?also, a second point to be made
your stock travel suspension does not have the travel to warrant the replacement of the rear links with control arms that feature Johnny Joints and/or Heim ends. Further, the OEM ones are plenty strong and more than durable enough.
