Front Runner Rack Options

APEX Overland---which front runner rtt accessory kit did you use...the normal kit or tall? I'll have a similar set up tent and awning. thanks
 
Stopped by Front Runner today and they installed the new rack and light bar. So happy with this rack. Glad I waited did my research on all the various rack manufacturers before going with Front Runner. This is the right set up for my needs.

Going to start attaching all my accessories tomorrow.

How did you attach the yakima mounts to the rack? Looks good!
 
For those that kayak...do you think the Thule Hullavator would be able to attach?

The base bracket for the Hulivator will not mount to this rack. You will have to fabricate something for it. I will be doing just that before spring.

I did choose to drill through the roof upfront. Its a little nerve wracking but doable if you plan it out and take your time.

The owner of Equipt told me that he didn't drill through he front of vehicle to mount his K-9 rack and just positioned the feet to apply pressure to the front of the rack to keep it down. While it obviously worked for him, it didn't make too much sense to me with all the wind going through the front, it would create a lot of leverage and just looked plain jury-rigged to me.

i don't plan on mounting more than a few wolf pack boxes and Maxtrax to the front so i am not too worried about the load on front of the rack. I can't vouch for how much that front mounting point can hold in terms of weight. I mount my RTT between the two rear OEM mount points.

here is the breakdown of what i used to mount my rack.

Front Runner Universal Track - 2200mm TRAC004 (qty)1

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on your rack set up. I like the idea of the lower height. Where did you get the lower shark antenna and what is the between slat foot adapter for? Is it necessary?
 
[MENTION=77370]Gabex35[/MENTION] I just spoke with frontrunner over the phone. They said for the track system with lower height feet, they would have to drill all new holes to mount it. Not just the front. Is this true? That's a lot of new holes.
 
[MENTION=138336]Cozen89[/MENTION] you do have to drill new holes but only in the track and not in the vehicle. The tracks come hole-less so all holes will have to be done. Only one per side will have to be done (or not done) on the vehicle.

That's what I thought, so I asked the person on the phone if I can just drill the rails instead of the roof and he said no. Thanks for your help.

Can you also point me in the direction of where you got your shorter antenna. Thanks.

[MENTION=77370]Gabex35[/MENTION] by not done, you mean don't drill the front mounting points? Is there a solution for mounting these rails/rack without drilling the front holes now? I'd love it if I didn't have to drill it in case I ever decide to remove the rack.

Or you could just go with the Eezi-Awn K9 and no drilling required if you are looking for a complete flat rack with options/accessories

I've considered the k9, but several things make me lean toward the front runner. 1-the lower overall height with the shorter mounting feet option
2-I don't want to completely block my sunroof
3-I've read the k9 rails bend and look wavy when mounting to a 4Runner

The only reason I said that was due to the debate about whether to do it or not in another frontrunner thread (or this one, I can't remember).
If I had to do it all over again, I would still drill. I can't imagine it would stay put or be strong without it.

Yeah..understand your concerns...there a lot of great options depending on what use you need, on your points though...the K9 has lower mounting options...Equipt expeditions and AT Overland can dial it in as needed

Sunroof...can't really comment much there but I have had one on a 4th gen in the past that gave me issues long term with rust/moisture issues but I was in a heavy humidity environment for 10 years

Lastly, the 5th Gens have curves and that was a concern for me also reading about some builds having issues w/the 2.2m rack install, specifically on the front rail segment, however w/my planning and execution..my rack is plum and never had any major issues,

Minor issues to note, I wish the powder coating was much better...I use the hell out of it and it shows looking from above but its aluminum....

Which leads to another point, aluminum bends a lot easier than steel so I have had some challenges most from torqueing to much on the slats which required me to take heavy grit sandpaper to smooth out so I could slide 6mm and 8mm studs down again ...all in all ...for my use I love the rack but like most everything you mod on your rig will require xtra mx than stock rigs

I think I've gotten to the point where I'm ok drilling 2 holes in the front. I just didn't want to have to drill 10 holes like the guy said on the phone. Thanks again for your help.

My uses will be for hauling large stuff that won't fit inside the truck and also for standing on with my camera and tripod. Having a mobile elevated position to shoot from will be very useful for me soon.

As for the sunroof, I have one, can't get rid of it, so if moisture issues happen they will happen. But until then I prefer not to block it. I don't always open it, but I always have the cover open to allow light in.

I also live near the beach, so something that won't rust is ideal.
