I just wanted to revive an old thread. We're planning another Tray coming up June 6-7! Same format as last year and everything.

Tray Mountain (Helen, GA and surrounding trails)

Camping is primitive, no water hook ups, and no public restrooms.

Trail:
The trail is beginner, stock, and 2wd friendly. Rough enough to get your feet wet with some basic off-roading. We’ll go into the trail from the Chimney Mountain Rd side of the mountain. We’ll head up to the top, and then at the top we’ll set up our campsite. The spot of top of the mountain is large enough to fit several trucks, and the event we don’t have enough room, there is additional sites up the trail as well.
From camp, we can then split off into groups for those who want to stay and set up, and those who want to go ride a few of the more difficult trails in the area. (Bell, Charlie’s, or Dodd if they remain open at the time).

Good chance I can meet up. Although, I'll be at GSMTR the weekend before. Have you guys looked into it? It's mostly Land Cruisers but I hear there are a few T4R's....time to steal the show!

Me and a buddy of mine will probably come out. Will get to test out my new lift and tires.

Tray mountain is a decent run. I've enjoyed it the past few times Ive been. Id rate it a 3 or 4 out of 10 in difficulty. I've seen stock toyota camrys get pretty far in before they simply can't make it anymore.

Last time I went, my friend brought an Audi All Road Wagon and made it through just fine. 2wd 4 runners should be able to make it through most of the stuff. There are a few rutted sections that might prove to be a little more difficult with only 2wd, but with the right line and some momentum, you should be fine.

Regarding camping - there are a decent amount of spots, but the best is at the top and is a large clearing. It is easily accessible from the western part of the trail, near a Trailhead for the Appalachian Trail. You can get to that site easily in a lowered honda civic if you wanted to.

The real view is from the top of Bell Mountain a little to the north:

Short trail, but the view is to die for. Trail isn't 2wd friendly however, nor is it stock height friendly. On the upper section of the bell mountain trail, there are a few rocks that you have to climb over. I bashed the side steps on my girlfriends pathfinder up on them and pushed them into the rocker panel on the drivers side....but that just gave me a reason to take them off - never liked how they looked in the first place.

With any luck, I'll be into a 5th Gen Trail Ed. by Memorial day and can join you guys...if not, I may have to bring the pathy (gasp!).

That sounds great! I've been looking, and there are several other trails within a short drive that we can go play in. Set up camp at the top of Tray, and then make some trips to the other spots.

Looking like there's a pretty good group. If Bell mountain comes an option, it'll have to be dry for me. There should be enough 4wd guys for the 2wd guys to ride up to the top with if necessary.
