I do think that these won't charge because of the amp draw is too high. I'm not an electrical engineer though, just mechanical.

you may have more luck than me.... The manual says yes, they do not specify what you can plug in other than only the first 2 items will be recognized. I'm guessing 2 thumb drives would work, maybe one thumb drive and a iPhone but I had issues with a iPod and iPhone. The particular hub will play a big role too. You want one with super low draw, the one you pictured may do the trick, only one light etc.

What do you mean when you say power only? That the stereo won't recognize the iPod when it's plugged in any longer and that it will just charge?
I've got the dash cracked open now(just getting around to this project). The wires for the factory USB are smaller than the wires for the one I bought. I just figured I'd splice the wires together with wire nuts and call it a day.
Aside - For some reason on my '12 trail the wires for the USB and 12V in the dash actually run to the right and down to the passenger kick plate.

Yes. Power only means there are two wires feeding the plug. +12v and ground. The two data wires are not there because this is meant for providing a dedicated 5v usb charging option.
As for wire nuts... They should never be used in a vehicle. You need to solder those connections and preferably use heat shrink to insulate the solder. Wire nuts will just vibrate loose eventually, which is annoying at best and a fire hazard at worst. At the very least use a crimping butt connector.

Well that's a Bi-ch. I suppose that since there is a 12v plug, and a single USB in the glove box, it would be best and easiest to take your advice from the beginning and just through in one of those USB adapters in the 12v for the phone cord and keep the USB for the ipod for my music library.
Sorry I mispoke, I meant butt connectors but said wire nuts.

FYI:2014+ 5th gens like my 2016 TEP do not have the USB port in the glove box, just the spot where it should be. LOL. It doesn't matter to me since I just stream Spotify for my in-car music needs.
I do, however, have a teeny-tiny 32gb thumb drive like this plugged into the dash USB port.
For me, having the USB power jack on the left of the steering column was a must because I have an A-pillar phone mount and I did not want the power charging cable draped across the steering column/instruments. I wanted a nice, clean install.

Just wrapped up moving my USB and AUX port to its proper location. ;-) very easy mod following the info in this thread. Thanks to all who contributed. Hardest part was overcoming the fear of messing up a brand new car. Once the first cover came off, I was not concerned about how the rest would go. no need for any tools other than an exacto knife to cut the tape that holds the cable loom on to the plastic. maybe a flashlight too. 20 min tops start to finish.
I'm surprised how many people still use iPods as opposed to Bluetooth streaming on their phones. With the cost of large (capacity) small (size) USB drives I'm surprised anyone even uses iPods in their cars still. I would think that leaving them in your car nonstop in the cold of the winter and heat of the summer would ruin them.
ETA: I am glad I did read this thread though. Not because of the USB switch but because of the 12v adapter that was linked to. I'll be ordering that shortly.

Okay I would like to chime in. If I get tired of satellite I like to dial up old favorites music from my library. I dont want to use my phone as I DO NOT use my phone in the car because I have lost a good friend in a wreck because he was messing with his phone while driving.
I have an old 8G ipod that the battery has gone south.. It holds a charge for about 60 seconds.. If it is plugged into power it works fine.. It is therefore a PERFECT fit for an embedded music server. My car has an aux USB connector deep in the storage compartment, and plugging in the ipod has been excellent - you cant even see it, and it works beautifully every time. I have never had an issue with it working.. hot or cold. I have however had a compatibility issue with my mini Sansa USB flash drive. Not to mention, depending on how the stereo handles the data source, can be a much inferior data display compared to the ipod interface.
I took issue with the judgmental negative tone of the 'I can't believe people are using xxxx', when you could have worded things like this - 'Would it make sense to utilize a flash drive... " etc.. Constructive intentions are important.

I just picked up a '21 ORP and I came across this thread. Is there any update on running dual data from this port? I was wanting to move the USB from the center to the glove box, but I will occasionally use Android Auto.
Also, I was considering moving the 110v switch to the center stack, or the wiper defroster (haven't decided) as I would like to keep the left side of the wheel open for aux lighting.

What do you mean by second data? My 4Runner's system will read two USBs full of MP3s at a time, and you can chose between them in the Audio menu.
I think he means physically splitting/duplicating the current USB/Audio jack port into 2 locations.
1 USB/audio jack in the centre console and adding second one in the glove box. We are asking around to see if there is a harness that could accomplish that but it seems no such harness exists and one would need to splice into the USB wiring to run a second USB.
But yes that manual says if you use a splitter you can have 2 USB connected.

It would be cool to have another port but like you said, that might require some risky and delicate wire splicing. Not worth it, imo. I moved mine to the glove box and keep two 128 GB mini thumb drives in there out of sight.
