There has been an update to this "Cryptomotive" debate!!! A photo has surfaced! I've blurred the plate out as to protect their privacy... and I'm not gunna get decerted for running the plate to find out what the MVD record says it is, but here it is... in all it's glory! You guys decide!
My only observation would be that the 'SSR-G' badge is normally under the surf badge on the left, but that may not always be the case...
Edit: definitely not always the case on later models by the looks of a quick google search! It may still be the real deal.

It is hard to beat the economy. Diesel is pretty pricey in the states so it kind of breaks even for us. I thought it was pretty gutless on the top end. Plenty of power down low though! The one I saw was in a Prado, a non-intercooled one. I hear that they have decent aftermarket support for power upgrades, though. I can't knock the 1KZ in terms of reliability either. It is another typical 90's Toyota truck engine that runs forever with maintenance. I once saw a Prado 90 with a 5L diesel in it, no turbo I am pretty sure, now THAT was slow.

It looks like an 01-02 Sport Edition in Thundercloud that someone slapped some Hilux Surf badges on. Usually, Surf's have different running boards too. Could you hear what it sounded like? It seems that the 5VZ is pretty uncommon in the Surf's. Most of them are diesels and in second place would be the 3RZ. I would not get my hopes up on it being a legally registered Surf.

I just don't know why someone would get all the badges and not have more work done to it... If you're that into a rig and knowledgeable to make it look like a foreign car, wouldn't you have already done a bunch of stuff to it? Just logically doesn't make sense to me.

Well said. I did the same thing on my fj80. Only thing I didn't have was the 1HDT motor.
I was going to do the same thing to the 4runner, but changed my mine when I did the taco clip.

I have no doubt the above statement is accurate. The tow hitch was never offered but oddly enough is a big ticket aftermarket buy in Japan, people drop a grand in some cases. Also, the blade spoiler above the tailgate glass was non Japan. You either had no spoiler, a large straight spoiler (like mine) or the drop down mirror spoiler. Kudos to the owner though:bravo:
