How To: AEM F/IC-6 Install, Tuning, and Help Thread

So after not driving mine for about a month I decided to take it on a trip to go shooting. We stopped to fuel up so my boy installed the boom slang harness and computer. We drove 90 miles no problems him watching everything. Then stopped ran in and got food, came out five minutes later truck would not start, just cranked. Removed bloomslang harness and AEM, truck fired up made the rest of the trip without the AEM. We drove about 260 miles round-trip.After The first hundred miles was over a mountain and used almost 1 gallon of meth. I wasn't super heavy footed. May just remove the meth and put race feel in when I want to hammer on it, it made much more power w racefuel anyway.
Not sure if the AEM will be my cup of tea. I drive about 350 miles then hammer on my truck for a few days and drive it home. It seems my long-term and short-term fuel trims will be ever-changing on the trip and the AEM will constantly need to be recalibrated.

It's not hooked up correctly, recheck the wiring and find what may be switched around or loose. Do you have any codes?

I daily my truck no problem and beat it like the redheaded stepchild. with the aem the tune is the most important thing and it sounds like yours is not anywhere close to where it needs to be. Let me send you the base tune I have and after you get your afrs dialed in you should be able to easily stabilize ltfts after.

Like I said you need to put a bit of work in but it will be worth it.

We tried the "AEM" tune, and tried it with "0" everywhere - Is that the same as factory?
It never dies, just on occasion, will not start. Went through the wiring on the harness a few times checking, all connections - That is what I do for a living so pretty sure it is correct PER instructions...
Never had a code of any kind, 9.7#, the AFR stays 11.5-12.7 while under boost with just the factory computer, drops about 1 full point w meth.

A question for you........Why not put a resistor across the knock sensors - will never retard - and just use the AEM to control all timing where you want it?

Okay that's not right, I wonder if you have a bad AEM unit? I have never had issues with it running rough or not starting. It could also be your wiring, I know boomslang did It but every truck is different....

AEM tune? 0's every where should run perfect just like stock.

What aFRs are you seeing at part throttle boost? That's the trouble area on these trucks. Wot is golden maybe just have to pull a little timing.

Idk what you mean by resistor on the knock sensors.. That is not a thing as far as I know I am able to pull timing just fine with the way that AEM specifys how to hook it up.

I check the harness against my EXACT schematic just to be sure - I trust no one... :) - And it is correct.
I thought 0 everywhere was stock, but did want to ask to make sure..
Part throttle??? Who uses that?? LOL, If I am into boost I am usually downshifting not lugging it #5spdproblems, Really if I am into boost I am usually WFO. Cruising 14.5.... neutral throttle

The resistor Knock sensor question is.. IF Toyota just pulls timing out when it "Hears it knocking", why not get rid of that variable and control it with the AEM, like the old distributor days, LOL.
That is the major issue correct? Toyota pulling timing and "US" not being able to control that?
If we know the timing was set, never to change because of the knock sensor, then we could map the entire setup with the AEM.
So, when I just dumped in racefuel, the engine didn't make more power just because it ran richer, it made more power because it ran richer AND no knocking /more timing = more power. Correct?

From AEM manual
The
“Fuel Map”
also has a couple unique
features that allow for easy setup of a
basic calibr
ation file.
The “Injector size change” and “Create base fuel map” functions
reduce the amount of time required to configure a m
ap when starting from scratch.

Similar to the
“Fuel Map”
, the
F/IC
software will a
lso create a base
“Ignition Map”
.
Right click on the
“I
gnition
M
ap

and select “
Create
base ignition map”.
Enter the
“M
aximum
RPM

,
“M
aximum boost

(must be absolute pressure), the desired
“T
iming
retard per unit of
Boost”
, and click
OK
.
(
Note: As with the
“Fuel Map”
, final tuning is
required after using the
“Create
base
ignition
map

function.
)

I plan on installing my FIC tomorrow with the boomslang harness. I already have the AEM Uego gauge installed. The only thing i am confused about (at the moment), is witch wire from the uego gauge do i connect to the boomslang harness? The blue or the white? Pretty sure its the white one, but want to be sure before i get started. Thanks

Injector delay time

Anyone know what the actual benefit of the value in the injector delay box is good for. its clear enough that its about the time the start of fuel flow lags behind injector signal.

What does the AEM do with this number?? Anyone have a clue .......

I'm not sure I didn't change mine. I am wondering if it has to do with something about the signal processing in the ecu

My vehicle has a momentary hesitation sometimes when I touch the throttle, the accel pump is working and hits hard after the tiny delay.

I am still on the 486 number but will start giving it a twirl and see what I learn

I wouldnt mess with it, I would pull timing in the cell that it hesitates at it sounds like you are having some knock.

Aem1GR, by delay box do you mean the injector response time? If so it is the time the injector takes to open. The fic takes that into consideration when calculating how long the injector stays open.
(I'm just regurgitating what I've learned from researching it here...)
From what I've seen after research with 5vzs and most other cars, most people leave it at the default and everything is perfectly fine. I've seen some people change it to achieve smoother idle and such. I wouldn't worry about it though. If you're running upgraded injectors, the manufacturer should include the latency time. For our stock 240cc Denso injectors *I believe* (don't quote me) the latency time is ~972us.
But like I said, most everyone doesn't need to change it and shouldn't need to change it from what I understand. It's a fine tuning feature that doesn't really make a difference.

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure what he was talking about and don't have time this week to pull up the software and look at it.

You're supercharged, correct, Aem1GR? And are you running correct sparkplugs for having a supercharger? I actually just started getting the same hesitation and it's because I'm not running the correct plugs. They should be here tomorrow and hopefully that solves the issue haha.

Haha no problem. I've spent WEEKS googling every feature and process on these piggybacks haha glad I actually learned something!

So today, I got to work and installed my FIC with my Boomslang harness. Got everything hooked up and it didn't want to start. Once it did it threw code 0340, which is cam sensor malfunction. Long story short, I got pissed and pulled everything back out. Called Boomslang and am sending it back to get "fixed" apparently it till needs to have the resistor bewteen CAM1 MAGI - and CAM1 MAGI +. The tech was aware of the problem and said it should have came that way. Just irritated because it was supposed to be PnP. end rant

At least they are fixing it.. I had to learn all that through trial and error and through lengthy talks with my buddy who is an electrical engineer. I don't understand why they would have left that resistor out.... That doesn't make any sense at all....

Slight hesitation

I wouldnt mess with it, I would pull timing in the cell that it hesitates at it sounds like you are having some knock.

The momentary hesitation is occurring in the 750 - 950rpm range. Not knock.

Yes - supercharged, yes upgraded 550cc injectors and yes everything else fine. Just chasing this slight hesitation off idle.

Running an 860ohm resistor on CRANK MAGI bridging resistor, sweet. Tried over values but not enough filtering

Is it at idle or when you bog it?
