How to make a 33" tire fit in spare location?

First i used a used 295/75/16


three tires stacked up.
OEM
16" spare then
18" duratrac




got 2 racheting tie downs. went around tire to do this to it.



cut the extra strap off and used a propane torch to melt the ends so i dont have it frayed



then zip tied up the extra. i plan on just cutting the straps off with my knife when the times comes to use it. at that time i dont think i will care about a $10 strap.

now its that much shorter than the 18" tire


under the truck tucked up tight


this is how far it is from the bar


i did this about 4 days ago. drove so far 125 miles with it. i'm going to post up pictures of it now if it has moved, later when i get back.

how old is the tire? i do not like the idea of putting a fold like that in the sidewall for a long time. i think that the other idea of putting the strap around the whole tire would cause less problems. this kinda reminds me of older cars having flat spots when sitting for to long. im no expert so do what you feel works for you. do you have the v6 hitch or the v8 hitch?

hm idk if id do that on a used tire, especially if there is any cracking in the sidewalls.

In reality it may not be the best thing for the tire, but it is a tire that will be used for a temporary time till you get the original repaired. As long as you have onboard air it should work just fine.

Every one has valid concerns. It's a standard bfg at that's dry rotted. It will be only used as a temp spare. I feel this will be fine since a compact spare collapses like this. Audi q5 has a tire like this. I have aired up tires that have been flat on a vehiclethat has been sitting for years. They aired up fine.

Just FYI, the Audi Q5 spare is not a regular tire that is squished down, watch the video to see how it works:

i think all he was trying to say was its not a regular tire, its obviously designed for that, in the case of the audi

Since its a temp. I use a 255/75/16. I think. Its whatever that was set as a spare from factory. Unless you are on a difficult trail. In thay event i would have a full size and have it place ontop of a carfo rack. Id hate the idea of driving 50 miles on a deformed square tire.

Bringing this old thread back to life because it saved me. Running Toyo MT 295/70/17 now. It will have to do until I do a bumper thing.

I guess I don't understand why people just don't throw the spare on the roof and go wheeling?

BTW-- I have seen a 10 year old spare tire which was never used (ever) put on a truck after the main tire got a flat and saw the truck drive for 1 mile and watched the spare explode. I think that the idea that a deformed tire will last any length of time is wishful thinking.
