How to: Transmission temp sending unit

This is a quick how to on how to make and mount a transmission temp sending unit. This was done on a 97 4Runner. The mounting location my change based on your year. This is simply informational and I will not be held liable for any damages the come from modifying your vehicle from its factory configuration.

With that said, everything I purchased was from Home Depot. I have included the links below from everything I used 3/8 NTP fittings for everything. I believe the factory lines are slightly smaller. I also used a 90 degree elbow to gain clearance and not have to run the hose in any weird way. This is optional.

3/8" Brass Tee
Sioux Chief 3/8 in. Lead-Free Brass FIP Tee-931-201601 - The Home Depot

3/8" Brass Hose Barb Fitting
Sioux Chief 3/8 in. x 3/8 in. Brass Barb x MIP Adapter-903-401601 - The Home Depot

3/8" 90 Degree Elbow x Barb Fitting

Lastly you will need an adapter to fit your temp sensor. I used an AEM gauge so I did not have a need for a grounding as it is a 2 wire sensor. To seal everything up I used:

RectorSeal T Plus 2 1.75 oz. Non-Stick Thread Sealant-23710 - The Home Depot

Next I made a mounting bracket using a 5 x 5 inch metal t bracket. I did this so I could move the sensor forward and back for placement.

Everbilt 5 in. x 5 in. Zinc Plated T-Plate-15068 - The Home Depot

After that was done I used some rubber isolated clamps to tie everything together.

5/8 in. Rubber Insulated Metal Clamps (2-Pack)-67792 - The Home Depot

Here is what it looked like all said and done. Mounted and installed. I used an existing bolt for one of the A/C Lines.

Ah this is good stuff. One of the few things that irritate me about my 97 is no tranny temp for my ScanGauge. I've been putting off a real gauge just because building the whole thing like you did, always seemed like it was going to be pain in the ass.

So documenting all your hard work for others to easily follow is very much appreciated and only makes this forum a better resource for everyone.

Oh if you have shots of how you mounted your gauge that would cool too.

I noticed that Brass 90° Elbow Barb has a link to Fastenal website. Does Home Depot not stock that particular fitting?

Sorry about that. I purchased the AEM gauge below. If you look around you can find them for 150-160 USD. I like the temp range and the fact it closely matches the factory gauges. I mounted it using an Autometer single gauge pod. The AEM has a light that stays on until your trans temp is at or over 100F. Also the 2 wire sensor is nice as well and seems pretty accurate.

I did have to source the 90 degree elbow from Fastenal. It was 2.55 for the elbow. You can also purchase them online from ebay sources. It made the install cleaner I feel and helped with the space.
