InfamousRNR's 2002 Limited BU!LD THREAD

Awesome build.

How is the range with the plastic AJT key fob? Several members on TacomaWorld were experiencing 10' of range with theirs, but that was made from aluminum, so that might have affected the range more than plastic. I think I might order one of these. Mine looks kinda worn.

Timing Belt Replacement

mtbtim & I started to Tackle the timing belt the other day...

Timing belt & water pump replacement - 169,000 miles

I went with the aircabinman kit from eBay.
Many here have had success with that OE replacement kit.

I bought a crankshaft pulley bolt from my local dealer for $11 as Toyota states that this part is a NON replaceable bolt.

We ran into a bunch of snags like having the right SST to remove the crankshaft itself, a stripped bolt hole in the aluminum where one of the pulleys secures too, & even getting the belt back on without turning everything was hard because it was so taught!

In true Timmy the Toolman & sean fashion, a video will soon follow after the appropriates edits are completed so stay tuned for that.

It was apparent when we ripped everything off the front of the engine that the water pump would need replacing in the near future due to the dried coolant crust around gasket however the belt seemed to be in "like new" condition with no signs of cracking. These belts are pretty robust. But whatever shop worked on this truck before I owed it ruined & stripped a stud & one of the pulley mounting locations. Just another reason I H8 auto shops in general because at the end of the day it's not their truck, & they want to get it done as fast as possible which leads to them just zipping things on quickly & ruin threads with their fancy air tools & lack of patience to make sure the threads are going on correctly.

So...whats next on the mod/adventure list? I am seriously debating planning a trip out West...ironically everything is West of Tampa! Maybe Colorado/Moab...you up for a trip?

Alrighty all y'all 4runner's that wanna wheel, who wants to plan a trip to MOAB??
I've always wanted to go but I'm a planner, so let's make like the solar system & plan -it -out.

The range doesn't seem to be affected by swapping into another plastic mold.

I have noticed range or overall better responsiveness when the batter is new.

I did both Moab and Colorado this year. Both are fantastic, Colorado has a more narrow window to go though due to snow sticking around well into the summer in the high elevations. Check my build for trip reports on both, I just posted the Colorado one last week. Moab was back in the spring.

The only reason these belts normally fail is the water pump starts leaking and coolant gets onto the belt and degrades it.

I used the same kit and it's good stuff. TB/WP isn't a bad job on these trucks at all. You'll probably notice how much quieter it will run afterwards with all new pulleys. It just sounds smoother. That was the first thing I noticed when I started mine up after doing the job.

You up for another trip? Maybe we start a caravan and head west?

You got me really excited with that new key fob as mine is broken too, sadly I must have the old style they don't make one for. Ended up just buying a new shell for $15 :violin:

Anyway, I went through your entire thread last night. Great 4runner and read!

Keyfob.com
$14 brand new OE fob. I bought two. Work perfect.

Got a link to which kit you used to replace the timing belt/water pump? Im about at that point where i shouldbe changing mine. Debating whether i want to tackle this on my own or take it to a shop. I feel the same about going to a shop for services but major work like tranny swaps and timing belts are beyond my capabilities.

Hey Jay, they're within your capabilities. You just have to have the time, the right tools and hope the moron who worked on your rig before didn't strip things making your job harder.

Adopted a 17 year old

I recently passed by a co-worker in the parking garage getting out of his 4runner I saw often & I was like whoa! "I didn't know this was yours!"

He said it was his girlfriends mom's & he has just been driving it for the past year & that they are wanting a newer car so they are selling it...

Immediately I was like, "wanna sell it to me?"

Well, one month later, I bought it from him for a super duper fair price.

Yeah, it had a couple of things it needed. The worst being the ignition cylinder (it had to be drilled out by him to get it to start), but i figured with my experience with 4Runner's & having this wonderful community I am proud to be a part of, i thought anything was possible...

So to make a long story short, I am now the proud new owner of a 2000 4x4 Limited, factory e-locked 4runner...

Fun Fact: I have only owned 3 automobiles in my entire life & all 3 have been 3rd gens... a 99, a 2002 & now a 2000.

so this new to me 4runner with 190k on the clock is technically my third 3rd gen. HAHA!!! pretty cool IMO!

everything works pretty much, all windows, AC blows cold, 4x4 works etc with a little body scuff damage on the drivers side.

But what i liked best when i was test driving it was how smoothly the transmission shifted, especially with my recent experience with how my current 4runner had the transmission explode at 160k.

I am one happy camper.

Nice job Seth. So I take it this 4runner is now going to be the one being worked on in Tim's garage for some time then?

I spy an Aerostar......

Nice congrats on the new rig! What are the plans for it? DD?

My DUDE!!! well, its not as in good condition cosmetically as my main bae (my 2002 thundercloud) so i won't be able to keep this one stock for long....

i've already gave it a little TLC... build thread will come soon.

hahahah, well now that i have 2 4runners, we will be able to do more videos of #sickmods for quite some time....

as for the aerostar, this has been my mom's favorite car.... at one point she had 2!

they are a classic car/van & has been a great car as well..... you know, they just don't make things like they use to... & this is why i hope to have a 3rd generation 4runner for as long as i can.

.

In other news, my main chick just hit 170k..... they grow up so fast!

Oh man!!! You got me! The field monitor unit has been on the back burner since it doesn't match my tab interior... it's grey... so I'm still on the fence to whether or not I will truly get that running. I really enjoy my sunglasses holder so it's a tough move to actually get that going.... the snorkel on the other hand is DEF a GO & I've been sourcing the hardware, & intake tube over time so I can install it... with all that said I bought another fender In case I F up the stock thundercloud one that I have on now... so once I get my gosh darn crap together, tim & I will be making a video on the Tacoma ARB snorkel install. So stay tuned! Please please PLEASE document your FMU install so others can benefit from your experience!

Just paint it bro! Mine was gray too. I used some plastic primer and then a couple coats of SEM 15753 Light Oak Color Coat, link is below. To be honest, this was the recommended match for my 80 series interior but it worked good enough here. The wiring isn't that bad...

Hope you don't mind the late comment, however most belts don't show wear cracks like they used to. They're made of similar rubber as tires. The wear is in the groves for serpentine and width for v-belts. They actually make small plastic testers to determine belt wear. One side of the tester will check the gaps in the serpentine groves the other for a v-belt.

Oh, and congrats on the 'new to you' rig!
