It's the small things...Bug Shield

I just turned over 6500 miles the other day and as I was detailing my 2011 4Runner I came across quite a few tiny paint chips on the very tip on my hood. I jumped online and ordered the OEM Toyota Bug Shield from a whole seller on Ebay.

Here are a few pics of the process of the install. I had purchased the touch up paint a few weeks back so I filled in the tiny marks and made sure to wash and wax the hood including under the hood lip. I like the way it turned out and can't wait for the Step Ups, Roof Rack Cross Bars, and Lift Kit; in due time!

Most importantly "no more hood chips".

That's when I decided to get mine...after I notice chips...I went with the AVS one though.

Looks good. I'm sure though with the OEM you don't have to slam or push hard to get the hood to shut... Maybe once the rubber seal gets compressed over time it won't be an issue.

Same here! I just got mine this week, just need to put it on.
 
I convinced the dealer to throw mine in, as well as the crossbars for the luggage rack, for free.

They offered to install it, but I didn't feel like sitting in a waiting room for an hour, so I just did it myself.

Do you notice any whistling noise above 70mph? The reason I ask is because when I had the AVS bug shield on, it made a whistling sound around 70mph. Thanks.
 
I have the factory clear bra on....never noticed any chips higher up, and I've got the OEM bug deflector. No whistling on mine.

It may seem that is was for free however there is no such thing at a dealership! I was charged $150 for this crappy sun visor wind shield as it was already installed. So i went home and got a pressure washer out.....well it came of with ease! I got a refund and a new one :flipoff: stupid delaers!

Pressure washing and automobile NEVER go together. Hand wash only. :snacker:
 
Those of you that have the OEM bug shield, have you noticed the metal clips digging into the paint of the hood and causing damage? I don't have one, but judging from the pictures it looks like this could be a problem. Just curious before I go and drop the coin on one.

Can't speak for the OEM one, but the AVS doesn't have that issue. If you place the stick-on rubber bumpers on the shield instead of the hood, then you have absolutely no contact with the painted part of the hood to cause damage.

I haven't noticed a whistle on the hood bug shield, but DEFINITELY picked up some whistle / wind noice on the Wade side window shades (in channel).....anyone else notice this?

Yea, I got the same. Way more then the Weather Tech's I have on other vehicles.

I must have looked at the direction upside down, but (from memory) it looked like you were to put the rubber bumpers on top of the hood. Correct?

After I installed the AVS, there's no way the shield will flex that much to hit the hood. So I did't put them on.

Are you saying to put them on the underside of the hood?
 
I've had the AVS Bugdeflector II installed since I bought the truck and

  1. It's not helpful for bugs as it deflects bugs right to about eye-level
  2. May or may not help with rock dings as I have several already after just under 30k miles.

Yeah, but it looks cool and give us an extry 5 MPG with the coolness factor alone. That and the stubby antennae, and it's almost like I'm driving a hybrid. LOL

You are correct, The directions want you to stick the bumpers to the hood. But I stuck them to the back of the shield instead of the hood. It accomplishes the same intent on the off chance that the shield does flex, and it avoids putting the sticky on the paint. Win, win. Not sure why the directions recommend otherwise to start with.

I did the same thing on the deflector on my Tahoe and it was fine that way for 10 years.

Not sure if I am responding correctly through the site but I am new to the mechanics of t4r.org so I apologize in advance.

With the OEM shield I dont hear any whistling at all. It works great too, I just detailed it again last week and no more dings on the hood.
