I picked up my 2016 T4R a few months ago as a replacement to my Xterra Off-Road and have been lurking long enough that I figured I would start a build thread. I will be using it for some overland trips while also using it for mountain bike, ski and camp trips to Colorado and throughout Utah. It will also be my daily during most of the winter months. I'm really liking the 5th Gen platform so far and will be adding quite a few more mods over the next year.

Thanks man. I went in originally looking at the new Tacomas then decided I wanted the T4R after driving both. I would have taken a MGM Trail Premium but there were none to be had and they had the Pro a few days out that someone had backed out of. After getting damn near retail out of my wheels/tires the price difference is basically a wash between the two. They weren't moving much on either model.

Your build is awesome. Good to see some Pros out there actually getting used and not just crawling malls!

It's a great looking rig. Gray is a pretty nice color for all environments. Hell if I'd have done magnetic gray I'd have likely done matte xpel film to make it more flat in look. It's a solidly nice color.

And thanks man, much appreciated. I wish I could photograph my rig on set out in the field more often but camera phone pics are usually verboten. My coolest moment was on Recoil 3 when BJ Baldwin was geeking out about my 4Runner, and I'm there dumbfounded, "dude you drive a million dollar trophy truck, my shit sucks by comparison." Good dude. But the truck is awesome and I can't remember the last mall I've been too.

I've bought my last two OME kits through Kurt. Great guy, great little shop to get overland stuff.

San Rafael Swell Trip

My buddies decided to throw together a quick trip down to the San Rafael Trip in the middle of last week. It was a mod marathon but I was able to get my full length PrinSu rack, Metaltech sliders, Indel B fridge, and Tepui Autana Ruggedized all installed by Friday afternoon before we left. We left Salt Lake at 5PM and set up camp in the dark down the Mexican Mountain Road. We packed up around 10AM on Saturday and headed out Buckhorn Wash, across Fuller Bottom, around Sids Mountain, down North Fork Coal Wash, and out to I-70 on Eva Conover Road. We then took I-70 down to the Temple Mountain Road exit and ended up setting up camp at the abandoned Lucky Strike mine. It was a quick trip but we covered alot of miles and saw some amazing country!

The Prinsu rack with the RTT looks good. Hmmm.

Yea I really like the look and how low profile it is. Unfortunately I didn't record the track, just followed along. I'm assuming there is a way to do that on the NAV? I need to look into it so I can do that next time. The last five photos were taken at or around Lucky Strike mine which is really easy to find off of I-70.
 
Curious on how you mount your rtt onto the rack. Did you have to slide it onto it? If so, I was concern with possible damage or scratch to the side of the rack from loading and unloading.

I had Rack n' Road install the tent since they are the local dealer and the tent ships to them anyway. They had 4 guys to throw it up on the rack so it didn't have to touch the sides of the rack. If you are going to do it yourself, I highly recommend having 3 other guys to help. The tents are heavy and you would definitely scratch your rack and likely your rig if you tried to do it solo. To remove it, I will be installing a crank lift with two straps in my garage to be able to lift it off by myself when I need to. I will be keeping it on my car until winter and possibly year round. Having a RTT is great but definitely not something you would want to be taking on and off regularly without a lift in your garage to do so.

Very tastefully done w/ the mods! Definitely agree with the Non-Bro build description. Also love the pics from your adventures, looks like you are enjoying your truck just a little bit.
 
Nice build. How do you like it compared to your old Xterra? Always interested in hearing real comparisons between similarly classed vehicles

For your roof top tent, does the ladder hold weight of the overhanging half of the tent, or does the tent have some sort of structure internally to hold the weight?

Thanks man. The Xterra was a great rig. It provided alot of utility in a more affordable package compared to similar year 4Runner. However, I didn't love driving it like I do the 4Runner. It wasn't nearly as comfortable or refined as the 5th Gen is. Hence, I didn't really want to fully build it as I was always on the fence of selling it for something more suitable for putting alot of miles on comfortably. I've been extremely happy with the 4Runner so far and am glad I made the upgrade.

Thanks bro. :D Yes, the ladder does support the overhanging half of the tent. You keep it at about 60 degrees so there isn't any chance of it slipping out. All of the other ARB, CVT, and Tepui tents are set up the same way from what I can tell.

Great build so far and awesome photos!

The lift is the way to go for solo loading and unloading of the tent. I bought the Racor lift off Amazon for <$100 and it's been great. Keeps the tent up and out of the way when not in use, too. You must have a decently high clearance garage to drive out with the RTT loaded. I barely clear my 7'6" garage (probably 7'5" to the bottom of the door) and I haven't installed a lift, yet. But there are a couple of tricks for gaining some additional clearance, such as removing the ladder, full tank of gas and full load, and my least favorite is airing down tires to get another inch.

A suspension lift is next for me after the roof rack. I love the Prinsu design that you installed. For suspension, I'm leaning towards the OME BP-51, too.
