Loved my 4th Gen but can't go there again - And not with dog smell

In my impatience waiting for the 2013's to show their cards, I started tinkering with the idea of going back to a 4th Gen V8 ('08 or so).

Went to look at one (Limited Salsa Red V8 4x4) at a dealer in town. They wanted $28k for the thing with 55k miles on the clock. BUT - It also smelled like the PO transported a pack of sled dogs around! Not to mention the nice little "BITE" marks on the console...hilarious. I calmly said to the kid selling it..."Um, even IF you find someone who can't smell, you might want to R&R that little section with the teeth marks." (grinning huge of course)

But sheesh - Yeah that V8 is sweet and I loved mine but for $2k - $4k more you can have a 5th Gen in a brand new SR5 base or a loaded SR5 or maybe '10/'11 trail/ltd with ~50k miles for close to the same money. For me, no contest.

It just reaffirmed my choice...the clock ticks. Come on '13's so I can get on with it!

I went from a 4th gen limited V8 to a 5th gen and haven't regretted it at all. I do miss the torque, but that isn't the same thing as regret. The 4th gen is really an excellent vehicle in my opinion, but happy here in a salsa red 5th nonetheless.

Not that I don't like dogs...but perma aroma embedded in the leather is no bueno! Really was pretty funny.

Think Seinfeld...if you're old enough to know what I mean.

HAHAHAHA, the B.O. episode!! Very funny Jerry: "do you smell that?"
Ellane: "what am I hard of smelling"

Are you waiting to get a 13 so you may be able to get a better price on a 12 or just waiting for a specific model? Just wondering, I was actually looking for a 10/11 back when I started looking for one in Nov of last year.
I couldn't find the specific one I wanted on the WHOLE west coast. LE, Shoreline Blue, the 15 speaker JBL system not the Entune, black leather and NO 3rd row or sliding rear deck.
I almost gave up when a dealer in AZ agreed to my "crazy" offer for a new one.
I was really lucky, as I asked for exactly what I wanted above, for $1500 under invoice and $1000 more for my trade, also the 1.99% APR for 60months. Imagine my surprise when he called on Feb 28th saying the dealership needed one more deal to break it's current monthly goal and it had only one mare day to do it. (2012 was a leap year so the had an extra day to break the record)
I did the whole deal over the internet and drove in and out in 30 mins, I think all the starts were alined or "It Was Meant To Be" and I could not be happier.
Pull the trigger and if they have exactly what you want just get it.

Thanks

This was my same experience. I started out looking for a 4th gen. V8 4WD LTD. Most low-milage examples were around $30k! Why not spend another $4k and get a new SR5 with Premium pkg?...basically the same equipment as a 4th gen LTD.

Hey Bay33, a little of both really. I want to see what happens to the '13's. If it's nothing I care about then I'll consider a '12 but it would have to be very aggressive. I will keep this thing for 15+ years (if I live that long) so I figure I may as well see what's up for '13.

Definitely like the way you describe the deal you did...I have less than zero patience for dealers. I spend every day negotiating and maneuvering with all sorts of characters...some straight-up good guys, some completely shifty BS artists so when I am going to hand-over $39-$42k the last thing I will deal with is double talk and/or irrelevant nonsense. I plan on buying from a dealer who gets that and will guarantee I am in and out of the office in less than 45 minutes.

When the '13 information is made public and it's nothing but a couple of colors, then feel free to harass me...all in fun of course.

Yup I'm the same I used to work in Finance and my time is more valuable to sit in a dealership all day to hash things out. I know how much they are worth and how much I am going to pay. My deal was almost like it was when I was buying my house. I looked at lots of houses, but when I walked into the one I live i now "I Knew" this was the one, kinda like the same thing happened with my LE.
Good luck with what you buy, just post lots of pictures when u do decide one what you get.

Well, according to my latest C&D, Toyota lists the 2013 4Runner as "no changes". I find that hard to believe, but then again, we would've heard something by now on any mid-cycle refresh. :(

Huh? Show me where Toyota list that?Toyota hasn't released any info at all on the 2013 4Runner that I can find and I'm a pretty good at research. Somebody here at work is waiting as he is going to buy a new one so we've been doing alot of digging.
He about caved in on a 2012 a couple of weeks ago at one of the dealerships. Called me and said the Manager called Japan while he waited and found out there wasn't any major changes for 2013. lol
I told him to have him call Japan back and find out what the minor changes were then. Said ,they couldn't give out that info.......ya right!

Maybe there really won't be any changes but history shows that on the last Generation 4Runner that there was a pretty significant facelift on the exterior and upgrades(projector headlights ,LED taillights) on the mid cycle refresh on the 4th year of production. Enough to get my attention and buy one. This is this this Gens 4th year of production coming up......

All of Toyota's 2013 brochures are out and at the dealerships ......except the 4Runner. Of course a dealer will lie and say there are no changes because his objective is to sell 2012's that he either has or has access to.

As far as hearing something by now about a mid cycle refresh you would have better luck finding the launch codes for one of the Minuteman III ICBMs.

^^^^^That would be 88751543GHDPIUNDLKHYAMJEW8B3H2JHAS.

Honest a Toyota sales guy told me.....

Interesting. Just went on Toy.com, under crossovers and SUV's, the only ones which they are calling "2013 models" are the Land Cruiser and Venza. All the rest, still show 2012........I did not check the rest of the categories.

Hi,

I wrestled with this decision for a few weeks. i finally got some insight when a dealer said they had 2013's coming I could "reserve" one of them. The telling part was that it was identical to the 2012 i was looking at.

I didnt buy the 2012 he had on the lot because it had a strong burning odor coming from the vents. So he looked in his whats coming book and offered me the 2013. Of course the price would increase.

That was enough for me to pull the trigger with another dealer about 50 miles away who had the color i wanted.

my 2 cents.

How do you or he know it was identical to the 2012 since Toyota of Japan has released no info on it yet?
