Magnuson Supercharger for 2010-Present & 2010-2014 FJ

Definitely doing it myself. I'll probably knock it out this weekend if nothing comes up and my body does not fall apart on me (dealing with another injury).... but it won't be until next week when it is running as I need to ship the ECU in for the re-flash....

There are a couple of local guys wanting to check it out. I was going to take it to the next cars and coffee at the oasis, but forgot I have rock crawling plans out in Mason that weekend. So may try to organize something with a group called ATXT4r on FB in the next week or two. If you are not a member check it out, bunch of 5th gens on there.

I would be down for a drive to ATX for a T4R meet up...

Can't wait to see Vin Diesel in one of these bad boys....

Some boxes showed up today. I have two other small projects to finish up first before I can start on this.. Man, I want to open them up. Hopefully tomorrow evening if the wife is cool with dinner in the garage LOL.

Were you able to get this bad boy in over the weekend?

Nope, prior commitments took precedents. Hoping to pull the ECU tonight.

BTW, it looks like the regular kit will come with a hand held programmer. At least that is what the instructions describe.

I can tell you this so far...

Packaging is amazing and very well organized. Everything is vacuum sealed... Very professional and organized.
Instructions look detailed enough that pretty much anyone could follow. There are about 80 pages with almost 300 steps. Very detailed with a picture for every step.

They obviously expect you to run premium fuel 91 octane or better. So I've been trying to burn out the crap gas I had in it. I actually normally ran premium... but we had that stupid gas shortage and that was all I could find around here for a while.

No worries, thanks for the update.

ECU out and shipping off tomorrow. Not difficult, but I don't think released kit buyers will need to deal with it. I've got a question sent off to find out if they want any feedback on that part of the install.

It sits in passenger foot-well area near the blower motor behind the glove box. not a place you want water... but if your knees are still dry... probably still OK in a water crossing gone bad scenario LOL
It has 6 connectors going into it...

wfo9.. Awesome that you are jumping into this! It's something I would never be able to do mainly due to time constraints. Looking forward to living vicariously through your project. More power to ya! Literally LOL

Hey man great job and its awesome to see you doing it yourself. As for the documentation, we actually did that both on the company vehicle and whilst I cranked mine out. It is not expected for those who will be purchasing the production kit. They will have a handheld sent directly to them at time of supercharger purchase. Those in the pilot test had to send theirs out so that all the ECM can get accounted for and so that Magnuson had the ECM stored on their side so that when the units/tunes were sent out there wouldnt be any that were missed. Cant wait to see the finished product. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Update

Evening yall,

I wanted to give all of you an update as to my personal experience with the supercharger. Im sure by now you all know that I do not work for Magnuson. I just happened to be in the right place and the right time to have been fortunately placed to assist in the process. I have had my kit on for some time and wanted to give yall some real life experience with it. I can tell you up front that I have yet to get bored with it and it still impresses me. I have given many people rides in it and many have driven it and the experience is all the same.
Many of you ask about MPG and it really comes down to how hard you're driving it. When I first got the kit, some time ago, I babied it for the first few hundred miles. Coming from the car scene and massive turbo setups, I am used to doing so to insure proper break in. With these kits you don't necessarily have to do that but its just my way of doing things. Prior to purchase these kits are tested very thoroughly. My MPG during that time honestly got better. Not by much but its something. I was right around 14+. I wasn't constantly dropping gears to maintain speed, it didn't struggle to get up a hill and maintained what appears to be lower rpms at cruise. I will say that I saw better MPG whilst not utilizing cruise control. After that "break-in period" it has dropped. I'm currently sitting at 12MPG but keep in mind that's because of aggressive accelerations and testing out each gear to see if there is any drops in performance or timing etc. It is also from giving people rides and letting others drive the vehicle. Testing hard accelerations on flat, up hill etc. It works fine in 4H and 4L and under crawl control conditions. There is currently another tune that will be uploaded and it is showing great numbers. It was tested under some heavy load testing and other conditions and it performed flawlessly.
I am currently working on relocating the heat exchanger pump and coolant lines that run to it due to winch location. Its a tight fit and for some will be a must depending on the size of their winch. Not a big deal and is something that can easily be done. Ill post pictures soon. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

See the Supercharger

In person this weekend, Sep 30th and Oct 1st at the Lucas Oil Off Road Expo in Pomona, CA. It will be at the Magnuson Superchargers booth. Come say hello, Ill be there all weekend. Hope to see yall and get the chance of meeting some of you.

One thing about your MPG. I noticed you just put a bumper on the other day... From my experience.. aftermarket bumpers can have a major negative impact on MPG. The brick becomes a brick with two parachutes via the fender-wells LOL. Just something to keep in mind.

12 mpg?!

jesus christ, no thanks

Did you read the part about 14mpg before and then

There should be no impact on MPG from this kit besides how you drive... Nothing about how the motor works at cruise is really changing. Tires, bumpers, racks, lifts.. yes those all impact mpg in a major way. Driving style... is obviously also a major factor.

Ill come see you, I gotta stop by their booth anyway. I get 12 mpg already, so I already know that will get work, but I live 4 miles from work and accelerate like a maniac, have the RTT on right now too.

Not that I know tonnes about this kit, but I'm not sure your statement is really accurate. A lot could have changed based on how they programmed the ecu. Also nothing is free in life. If this kit was programmed for much better throttle response and power (which the 4Runner needs), you will see a definite change in mpg from stock in day to day driving, even if you baby it. Maybe 12mpg is not an accurate assessment in an apples to apples comparison (especially in steady state hwy cruise situations), but a 2-4mpg hit is highly likely in regular day to day driving.

Got curious this morning about installation ... decided to call their dealer recommended on Magnuson's web site. It's a Toyota dealer 1.5 hrs from me.

Turns out they've installed Mag s/c on Taco, Tundra, and the BRZ/86.

I was told these typically take 10-12 hours, which aligns with what THESS reported, and that their fee would typically be $660.00. When I expressed surprise at the low cost, he said they use a special rate for products like this as a promotion. Interesting. Guessing that means I buy the kit through them.

Turns out the Svc Adv I spoke with is quite knowledgeable ... drives a modded 4th Gen V8 ... said "I'm the go-to guy here for s/c installs". Cool.

Just out of curiosity, I'll call my 2 local Toyota dealers too. I don't have high expectations.

Yes, everything is give and take.. but I don't think you understand how a modern engine works. Let me throw out a few facts that might shed some light.

In light throttle conditions:
The engine will be running the same static compression ratio, the same AFR, the same timing, the same IAT, the same valve timing, the same exhaust back pressure. The compressor itself will be in bypass mode creating no drag to speak of...

Now explain where this 2-4mpg hit is coming from? If you point to bumpers, tires, rack, lift... i'm 100% with you. Also if you point at accelerating faster and getting into open loop or boost... but simple light throttle... there should be no major change. But we will see here shortly.

But honestly if I cared about MPG much... I would not own this truck to start with. It is a brick and I've done many things to make it a bigger brick. I really only care when I'm on a trip and trying to get decent range.
