There will always be posts that are somewhat off topic, but receive better responses here because of the relationship users have within this sub-community. This is where a moderators job becomes hard. But their involvement in this community also gives them the best insight into what to allow and what not.

Let me clear one thing up:

I don't respect people for how long they have been here. I respect people for helping other people here. People call a group of us grouchy old timers lol. Never mind that some that fit in this "group" have only been here a year or so and some are only in their 30's! I notice people who answer other people's questions... accurately. And if they don't know the answer they go find the answer and report back. I respect the guy who has searched but not found the answer. I have a lot of respect for those who do the write ups and "how to" articles. It's not easy to do it and there is zero reason to do it... except to help someone.

Those are the people who have my respect and there are some new people in there too. Some youngsters also. These people are why our forum is one of the best out there. It's not the people asking the questions that makes it good. It's the people answering the questions and they are not all old and grumpy. Not even the majority are.

I'm still pretty new, but I been on quite a few forums prior to this one. Personally I would like to see some sub-folders in the the generation specific folders ie Suspension, Exterior, Interior, Lighting, DIY, etc. It is cumbersome looking through threads that have that have topics all over the place. Also the addition of a part review section may be beneficial.

If you go on google and type in: interior light 5th gen 4runner forum, all of the topics regarding interior lights come up for 5th gen 4runners on this forum. Part reviews can be found using a youtube search.

Except for the threads that do not contain the words "interior" and "light" and all of the millions of threads that do contain the words "interior" and "light". Also you can find things you weren't exactly looking for if your browsing in a topic.

Using the right words and leaving out extraneous information when searching will narrow that down. I'm not saying you're searching incorrectly, I'm just saying that I've never had a problem when using Google. Part of acquiring knowledge is sifting through information and finding the facts. Some people drop pearls, others drop opinions.

I'm not saying the searching function is bad. I actually like that it utilizes google, its faster. But if I want to browse a topic, I shouldn't have to sift through hundreds of Bilstein 5100 and MPG threads.

Which means that stuff you understand as you read it? Me? I'm using google to learn new terms just so I can understand the main content of the post!

I grew up on the internet when all was text based, BBS's and shit, and if you needed help, you had to talk to someone. The hours of research is what will allow you to make a honest and hopefully unbiased and informed decision on what is best for you. I am by no way an auto tech (hence why all of my write-ups are "mods for dummies" or "if I can do it you can" type explanations). But without the hours of research I would not have been able to do anything or feel that I have made the right decisions for the additions to my 4Runner. I know what I do about the 4Runner because of the hours of research on this forum and I also understand that I still have only scratched the surface of automotive knowledge. To do things or learn things thoroughly there is no "easy way". It is the time spent gaining knowledge and applying it where true learning will take place.

This forum is fantastic and there are a ton of helpful members on here. They have gained all of there knowledge through time and hard work, I don't think it is too much for them to ask for a little time and effort to be spent to learn as well. I know I ask the same from my middle school students.

I enjoy sharing what I know or have learned from my years of breaking things or buying the wrong things or...you get the drift. I do expect someone to come with a willingness to learn, an open mind and hey...being the internet some skin that is a little thick to take the natural ribbing grown ass adults give each other.

Ive been part of forums for many many years. Owned one at one time, did the mod thing (god bless you all that do that job) and was the newb myself. However...I grew up on the infancy of pirate4x4 and did my first few builds through that site...and builds meaning, not which tint makes my ass look fat. I'm talking junk yard parts, building a crawler builds. People aren't kind to easy questions over there...they have an expectation you come with some knowledge or at least take your lashing with grace if you ask about something simple.

Hard to compare the two forums but the idea is the same. If you do enough research...and then have questions about which part is better for your needs...great! If you want to know if 265's fit....:fish:

Oh i totally agree, but theres TONS of "simple" stuff that just takes a google search to find an answer to. I could've came on here and started a thread asking what upper control arms should i buy to get the most caster, but i just read about 1billion threads. Even though I already knew I am going to buy DirtKing uppers lol. But yea some stuff it does require the advice of the so called gods, which i completely understand. Some guys are true OG's with certain vehicle platforms, they know the weirdest shit; bolt sizes, torque values on said bolts, etc.
