Most Miles on 1 Tank of gas?

I have 2000 4Runner Limited 4.3L, and get around 270 miles tank. When filling up the fuel pumps clicks off real early on the 4Runners. I can usually squeek in another 3 gallons, but I have to nurse it in REAL SLOW otherwise the pump keeps shutting off.

Anyone know of a mod to the 4Runners fuel downspount so that it doesn't fill up so quickly (evenb though the tank can still hold another 3 or so gallons)? When you fill up all the way, you get that extra 50 miles or so to the tank.

And you are slowly killing the evaportative canister by overfilling the tank. You should stop when it clicks than go one more time til it clicks then call it full. The tank is officially 18 gallons but a gallon or so is unuseable since the pump doersn't sit on the bottom of the tank. Even when I think mine's about dry the most I can fill up with is about 15.5-16 gallons.

Gas vapors need that extra room to expand when heat builds up and if it can't expand it forces raw gas to saturate your charcoal canister causing it to fail and it'll cost you a couple hundred to replace.

Anyone aware of an aftermarket tank that is a few gallons larger than the 18 gallon OEM tank? Perhaps around 22 gallons and mounting is fairly straight forward?

Well changed my O2 sensor and theres still no improvement really.

When I drive all city, its like 165 miles on a tank. I live in San Francisco and it's hilly I guess, and I don't drive like a grandma, but at the same time, I'm not that crazy.

So I don't know what it is.

380 miles til the light came on. all freeway Sac to Redding and back plus a couple short in town trips and to Shasta Dam. computer had from 17.3 going to Redding facing the wind and 20.1 coming back.

Well i just got my 00" Sport Package 4WD, even with the 4.30's out back and 4WD i get on average from full to light comming on ~13-14Gallons im getting about 230 miles. and thats a mix of city and hwy driving. on a 4hr hwy drive cruising at 85 i got 275 out of a tank. I believe had i done 75 i would have gotten 20-21mpg, and this is with the 4.30's. ALOT better than my old 92 that got 12mpg no matter what, however i saw as much as 14mpg in that bad boy if i was careful. Im saving myself $210+ a month is gas savings alone, hell thats 3/4 of my truck payment, and with upkeep and maintenance less on this newer 4rnr im actually comming out ahead and have a much better truck in every way(minus offroad that 2nd gen went anywhere)

A good test on to know if im doing well on MPG (17-18) is if at half tank im at 120miles. Whatever im at at the 1/4 tank mark is roughly my MPG as thats close to 10 gallons down. If i can manage near 20mpg with the 4.30's and 4WD i dont see how the rest of you dont get better....

I can get about 300 miles on a tank, and by the way, you can drive even when the light is on and you are below the last hash mark...but I did put in 18.1 gallons the one time I did that...meaning I had .4 gallons in my tank when I finally filled. That was a huge relief. Drastic times call for drastic measures

How is that possible? I was always told that there were 2 gallons of fuel that could not be used.

I think the most I have ever gotten in the tank is 16.1, but it has been a while. As for the extra 2 gallons, the fuel pump does not sit on the bottom of the tank. This is what I have real multiple times in this forum.

Purposefully designed means there will be a little remaining fuel in the tank since you don't want the pump to pick up sediments that naturally build up over time since it'll just clog up. With 4Runners there will be about almost two gallons left which is also there to keep part of the pump submerged to keep it from overheating.

Also if you are squeezing gas into the neck you are doing damage to the fuel system and the evaporative emissions controls and if those fail it'll be an expensive fix since it's all dealer only items.

I've never squeezed in more than 16.3 and that was only once and I average a full fillup to be about 15.5 gallons.

My advice is to only fill it to the first click let it drain down and then fill it again to the click then call it full or you will overfill it really easy. There needs to be room for the gas to expand when it gets warm out so it doesn't build up massive pressure right after a fillup and can cause damage that way too.

Ladies, I just came back from the gas station.

385 miles and it took 17.1 gallons to fill up. :biggrin2: I would have kept driving just to see how far I could take her but I got scared because the gas light was on for a long time.

The gas tank is 17.5 correct?

Comes out to roughly 22 1/2mpg, which I suppose isn't that bad for a vehicle that's over a decade old!

How did I achieve these numbers? I drive like theres an egg under the accelerator. I don't care about the people behind me or if it takes me 30 seconds to go from a redlight to 45mph.

On I-75 I put it in cruise control @ 55mph.

i got 320 out of mine yesterday and i put in 14.3 gallons the light was on at 240. i feel like i can get more than 320, i do mostly highway driving... i just wish the damn gauge was accurate.

I can get 250 with about a gallon left in the tank. With a bit of off road use i get a wee bit over 200. Im running 35' swampers with 4.88's. I never stomp on it, its to big to go fast plus I have my 07 Z if I have a need for speed. My millage calculates to approx 13-16 per mile. I have 18 gal tank. 3.4L 4x4. Oh yeah and it needs plugs, water pump, small leak for radiator (very small) timing belt. Needs a tune up basically and its doing ok compared to yours. I still think im getting shit milage though.

yea my gas light usually goes on around 240-250. i usually get between 300-320 miles per tank and im usually only filling between 15 and 16 gallons. once i filled 17.5 gallons at the pump my my car was starting to choke out becasue i was so low, i was lucky to make it to the pump.
