Honestly and not to be an a s s, but I'm disappointed you got it back. IMO, Better to get a whole new truck then for you to be thinking about this going forward every time you get in the current one and think about what they did to it, what they broke, how they drove it, who or what was done in it, etc..
Maybe if you put a lot of aftermarket stuff on it it's good you got it back, but otherwise there is no way I'd want it. That's exactly how I felt when my Camry was stolen years ago and I even told the cop that. Was perfectly happy taking the money and getting a new one. Fresh start.
Good luck with yours if you are happy though.

Glad they found it still drive able. Your case is like a walk in the park compared to another thread on here in the 4th gen section call "Thieves are getting smarter".
My mom had her Camaro stolen before I was born, wallet stolen at our cousins, busted windows for a old HU, and a hit and run on my 98 4R before she gave it to me. Thankfully it wasn't totaled.
Glad they found it & every one is safe & unharmed. Those bas****s will get what's coming to them :bash:

We had a break in a few years ago where they dusted for prints, wow, whatever they use for power is a pain in the a$$ to clean up!
Glad to hear you got it back (unless you had your eye on a new 4R)!

Johnny, let this be the first time I actually agree with you :yield: lol.
I do wish it was gone, I don't know what how they drove it. Though it was only gone for 2 days, i'm sure half the time it was just sitting where it was called in.
The cost difference for a new car would have been much more than what its going cost to fix it and keep it for a while, Hopefully, if it doesn't get jacked again.
I am making some changes to it that hopefully will make me feel better about this whole situation.
The shop it's at said the car has to get detailed inside and out because of the powder. that stuff got all over me after the cops finished with it.

Toyota needs to modify the smart key system. The truck can tell if the key is inside or outside of the vehicle (so you can't lock the key in the truck).
So they should program the system to turn off the truck if the brake pedal is depressed and the key is not in the vehicle. This way someone can't jump in and drive off.
Perhaps you should contact Toyota and suggest it, they might listen. Especially since you have evidence that this happened to you. A change in design could save a lot of Toyota customers potential headaches or at least those who have vehicles that use this smart key system.

Considering that option. However, my truck has safety connect which is sort of the same thing. Considered having both the safety connect and lo jack. Not sure which route I will take.

Maybe another suggestion should be that they change Toyota Care. Maybe they should offer an emergency tracking service. Charge a reasonable one time fee and they flip the switch and tell you where your car is.
I understand they want a subscription, but still, if a guy looses his truck, the least they could do is track it. But it seems that society has lost this common sense decency to do the right thing.
As for the cops, well like my CWP instructor told us (he was a cop himself for over 20 years), most of the time cops are armed historians. They show up after the fact, are armed with a pistol, and just write down what happens. After that very little gets done unless its a major crime. So its up to us to be vigilant.

Very well said. Never thought about it that, even though cops have never been anything but useless and toxic in my experience.
Regarding GPS tracking device, you can get one from a car electronic store.
Local shop with some options -

This thread reminds me I need to add my aftermarket accessories options to my insurance. If mine was stolen I wouldn't get nearly enough back to compensate for everything I've done to it, especially If I didn't get the truck back. Maybe a hidden gps unit would be a good investment too.
Sorry you were highly inconvenienced and at horrible timing. No matter what the outcome was, I'm glad your child was not in the car. However, they may have reconsidered if he/she was, but personally that's not a chance I'd be willing to take. Good luck.

Do it! It's worth it. Make sure to conceal it though, because they will look to find and disable it. Crooks are getting smart in the tough economy, as I said before, 1 tow yard gets SIXTY cars a month that are reported stolen, this doesn't count for all the other rides that end up across the boarder.
If I could arm my truck with explosives when stolen, I would lol :gun6:

gps tracking doesnt do a bit of good if the car is in a parking garage or in a garage thats more than a single story... or inside a metal container ect... lo-jack is run off or radio freqs, so even inside a metal shipping container or inside a parking garage is still able to actively transmit. and there are several levels of arming... you can have it automatically transmit its signal if the vehicle is moved without "decoding it" -basically there is a FOB transceiver that connects with the device in the car saying "its ok im the owner of the vehicle dont worry im not steeling this car..." or their is another setup that alerts you first(via email, text message, and or phone call) that the car has moved... this way you can call the cops and they can look for the freq(its i radio reciver that is in patrol cars, once they get a hit, the receiver directs(via triangulation) cop(s) to the vehicle -they have even found cars on freight trains inside containers and at sea ports on ships about to leave the country... this way is a little better because it gives your more control in reporting it stolen, other wise say you wife misplaces her keys(the ones with the disarming fob on them) and has to use a spare set of keys... well the transceiver in the car thinks that someone is stealing the car and activates and next thing she knows there are five cop cars boxing her it doing a high risk traffic stop...
its well worth the cost. especially sense insurance co are notorious for not paying you what the vehicle is actually worth... or the fact that the car might be gone for days and have the piss driven out of it or wrecked ect...
in a way you got lucky that they didnt trash it or beat on it too hard, but i do feel your pain in the violated feeling and loss of your personal stuff.
