My trip up Pikes Peak

Took a nice scenic drive up Pikes Peak this weekend and thought I would share with you guys. Not exactly off road but nice views anyway. Enjoy. :wink2:





















Didn't get any pics at the summit because my friend started to have an anxiety attack from the altitude (he's from Iowa) So for punishment we made him take this picture.

It is kind of lame, but it's better to sacrifice 1 mountain to appease the tourist gods than to have them trying to drive their prius' and minivans up an old logging road on more pristine mountains.
 
It never used to be paved all the way. (Search you tube for some of Rod Millen's mid 90's runs with the Celica and Tacoma up it or "Monster" Tajima's 2011 record setting run was the last done on partial gravel.)

Problem was all the gravel gets pushed off the side of the roadway, and starts to kill the vegetation and such below it. When you are there though it doesn't really matter what the surface is, you don't need it to be a back woods trail to be amazed by the views and the climb.

Beautiful place to visit, highly recommend to take the time to make the drive.

!!! awesome!!! i remember watching that video as a youngster and being mesmerized. That's why I was sad to see the whole damn thing is paved now, but I guess it makes sense.
 
Speaking of Pikes Peak anybody heading up this year? I've been here over 10 years and have "tried" to go the last 2 and still can't get my group to leave denver at 4am to head down. Even had tiks last year and we partied too late in excitement and failed to wake up to the alarm. So disappointed at 9am when I finally came to :twitch:

I'm committed this year (no going out night before) and have been watching vids to scope where I want to watch. Too many options.

How I love Rallisport. Wish it was more popular here in the states. And, yes, it's a damn shame they paved the road.
