New Light Setup - Thoughts Please

It's done!!!!!!! Ok I know it's never done, but done for now. The aux relay box is mounted next to the OEM one. I know I was going to post pictures but after looking around under the hood, it seemed like the only place that was going to work for me. So the box is mounted, switches work, and aux backup lights are mounted and wired. Its wired so that lights can only be switched on when the key is in the on position. Also the switches light up once the when the key is in the on position. I could have wired the switches so that they would have lit up when the headlights were turned on but I preferred to just have have them on. Once my camera gets some juice in it, I will snap away tonight.

Awesome!! My box should be getting here this week. I bought an aux rear light...now just need the switches!

Once the switches are installed - how easy are they to pop off? I have a silly idea but in doing so the rocker part may need to be removed from time to time.

Rouge1: I'll post some pics of them with some better light so you can see the lights and how they are mounted. They are Pilot ion crystal fogs I grabbed on Amazon for cheap. I pretty much grabbed them based on size and price.

Phillyd2: To remove a switch from the bank the bank needs to be pulled out and there is a special tool (actually 2 are needed) to push the entire switch through the front of the bank. This can be done with screw drivers but you might mangle the plastic in the process. If you were just speaking about removing the "cover" on the switch the same "tool" can be used to pry it off. Be careful as I accidentally did this and the internal springs came flying out as well as the rocker. Not too difficult to reassemble but I wouldn't want to chance losing the parts again.

If you order a switch bank through OTRATTW they ask if you want none, one or two of the removal tools. I only ordered one but should have gotten two as I think they are only a buck or two each.

So I'm curious as to what you tap your blue wire and your red wire to? The Blue wire says illumination - does that tap into your cigarette lighter or something? Then what does the red wire tap into? Thanks

I used a Bussman ATM fuse tap for power. You remove a fuse from the panel and insert it in the fuse tap. You also insert an additional fuse for your new circuit and there is a wire extending from the fuse tap that you use for power. It's very straightforward and prevents you from having to hack up anything in the fuse panel. I picked something that only gets power when the ignition is on (can't remember what it is off the top of my head but will check later).

The illumination wire on the switches is intended to only light up the switches when you turn your lights on. Rather than tap an additional source I used the same wire as was used for red wire to send current through the switches to the relay. This means once the ignition is in the on position the lights will be already on in the switch. Not sure if I was being lazy or just nervous about taping into something else.

Thanks. Are there existing threaded holes you used. I'm truckless right now so can't look. Erik just sent me my custom Config P (for me!) box but have a few weeks of prep before I install. I was thinking against the fender but yours looks a hell of a lot better.

I just used short sheet metal screws through the fender. They will pop out below in the wheel well. I think they way it is positioned two are visible. Have to go back and check. I gooped them up with some sealant for now. Planning on going back when I get some free time to clean it up. Will seal up the holes and probably use a short bolt and nut.

Reviving this old thread - I have the same switches mace. has and have finally gotten around to installing everything (6 months later...)

Dumb question - I have everything wired up per mace.'s instructions and pictures but my switches won't illuminate / no power.

In order for the add-a-circuit to work, does there need to be a fuse plugged into it?

Also, Mace. in the pictures you posted, was this the correct and final wiring of your switches?

You definitely need two fuses in the add a circuit. Use the one from the spot you are plugging into plus an additional one. If you don't have a spare, just pull one from something else to test it. As far as the final wiring, I think that was correct in the photos. I know at one point I had to switch some things around though. Let me dig out the diagram in the morning and I'll let you know.

Sweet. Thanks for the help... I'm not sure if you were able to find a low profile mini fuse add a circuit but mine is just the regular mini add a circuit so our fuses won't fit inside.

I'm about to run to the store and just grab some regular mini fuses for the testing.

Not to thread jack, but could we get some more fine details on this particular install? I have been looking for a spot to do all of my lighting switches and this would be perfect! Does the flip lid still close and function properly? How clean did the fit and finish come out with lining up the switch panel with the slot?

Not sure if this was mentioned earlier but there are stock fog light and driving light switches that fit into the stock slots and illuminate - same ones that are used on the tacoma and FJ. A bit pricey, but stock nonetheless.

Thanks for your help mace! I picked up some regular mini fuses and popped them in the add-a-circuit and it worked flawlessly! I am going to pick up another add-a-circuit and have the illuminate power with the lights and have the switch power always on.

Once everything is all cleaned up I will post pictures and details of the final install.
