Official Classics Lift and Tire thread

They come with U-bolt flip kits, brake lines, all kinds of goodies. Here's some pics of mine when I was building this portion.

is there any lift on yours? it is it just stock?

not an expert on lifts... looks like a 4" as a guestimate. I will always run stock height but may upgrade parts if needed. I do general off road... nothing that requires anything more than what the incredible 1st gen 4runner is designed to already do... which is a lot. I prefer the reliability that comes with the original engineering. I am getting ready to add a set of LT235/75r15's which adds quite a bit over the stock 225's which are almost only available as p-rated tires. 30x9.5 may be the best choice for a stock ride imho. I had a new ranger in the 80's when stationed in Arkansas and quickly buried it in shallow thick mud with the 225's. Put 30x9.5 AT's on the next day and went through the same mini bog twice with no issue. Night and day.

I've built a few broncos and owned a '74 highboy (3/4ton ford 4x4 with what is the equivalent of a factory lift). If I were into big rocks, really deep mud or, perhaps, pretending that I am... i would entertain a lift. The runners are pretty amazing off the showroom floor. I value that. Between the steeper angles and increased pressure on parts... lifts can be problematic if you are not into wrenching. However, I do respect a proper build like what is going on above.

I will be adding a 3.4 once this 3.0 is toast but at 108k, I have some driving to do! I'm not dishing those who turn these machines into off-road beasts... but we can cover a ton of ground the way they come.. with just a few upgrades... mainly LT tires. And, we can retain all around functionality and that Toyota reliability.

With stock shocks ( new) what coils do you recomend in the rear, im looking for just a bit of lift, but i really need harder shocks for heavy loads.

Any options?

Sup guys. I've been digging around in this thread for a bit trying to make some decisions on the future of my build. It's gonna be for overland stuff. So far I've got BJ spacers and OME shocks and springs that I got on craigslist for $150. We (and by "we" I mean, my qualified mechanic friend) put all that stuff on and it came out perfectly level which is good because we could NOT get those old torsion bars to move. Then I got these BFG 33" mud tires and wheels for free from someone at work so I def wasn't going to turn those down. Right now I just barely get some fender liner rub at full lock, but I can always trim that a bit. But I do know my steering stops need to be adjusted because my turn radius has been garbage ever since I put some new plastic caps on them.

In the future, I definitely plan on replacing the tires with ATs since most of my trip mileage will be on-road and the rims with some Pro Comps. But, I'm trying to decide if I want to get wider tires and the considerations I need to make for that in terms of rim width, backspacing, etc. to avoid rubbing and an overly wide stance (I actually how the stance turned out with these wheels and tires.) What's the benefit of wider tires over narrow and what do I need to consider when making that decision?

EDIT: So, I've learned that I can definitely run a 12.5 inch tire on an 8 inch rim, but I believe I will require another inch of backspacing in order to keep my stance width as it is and put more of the tire inside the wheel well, which it seems like there's plenty of space in there. Is this correct?

Anyone running 285/70/17's?

I'm buying tires for my 88 soon. Currently running a 2" ome lift all around. I would really like to get ko2's in 285/70/17. They measure 32.8 x 11.5. I'm worried they're going to rub. Anyone have any experience with this size? Unfortunately they don't offer a 275/70/17 in a C rated tire. I would have to step down to a 265/70/17 which is a little smaller than I want to go to. The Cooper AT/3 comes in 275/70/17 in a C rating so I may go that route to be safe. That's 32.2 x 11.1 tire.

I have a 91 installed a 2" toytec lift, I went out and bought 33x12.5x15 they were running on the ball joint. So I bought a 1 1/4 spacers, it took care of the ball joint rubbing. But then I had to cut the fender about 1 1/2" and cut and find the body lip inside the fenders. So far so good.

You can run any Toyota 6 lug wheel and they will fit no problem.

This I have to disagree with.
That is what I thought as well until I bought a set of early 2000's Tacoma 2wd wheels.
They are the right bolt pattern and fit on the rear, but they would not fit over the hubs on the front wheels of my 2nd gen 4wd.

that's good info. Thx

275/70/17 or 275/75/17 on IFS

My 1989 is presently equipped with 1.5” BJ spacers, 6” shackles, 1” diff drop, and rolling on 2016 Trail Premium 17” wheels wrapped in BFG MT 255/76/17 off a buddy’s Rubicon. When these tires wear out, I’d like to go slightly larger to a 275/70/17 or 275/75/17. Any likely issues with my current suspension setup?

I’d rather not get into a body lift, as I already have welded Marlin Crawler rock sliders and don’t want to create a weird gap between them and the body.

I tried the advanced search function, but get zero hits for short character strings like tire sizes.

Hi, i have a quick question about a suspension lift i'm willing to buy from roughtrax.

2 new shocks front
2 new torsion bars
2 new shocks rear
2 new coil springs rear

All with a 2" lift but something tells me i should get some ball joint spacers as well?

We don't visit heavy off road tracks. This is for our family/holiday 'RTT-equipped' 2nd gen 4runner.

I'm completely new to lifts, and the truck I bought came with a 3" spacer lift installed. The ride is reeeeeally stiff and it feels like I'm going to get bucked out of it sometimes haha. I'm guessing this is because it is a spacer lift rather than a coilover lift right? On the bright side the previous owner had only recently installed it so it hasn't been riding this rough for very long. I'm probably going to lower it back to stock before too long. I assume my 235/75/R15s are stock enough to fit fine. Just wondering how other lifts ride on roads? Are they all pretty stiff or is there a lift type that keeps it smooth? I'm not in it for a huge lift since I want to use this as my daily driver but would consider a small lift if it wasn't sacrificing ride quality too much.

I was wondering the same thing. I just picked up a '91 yesterday. I'm putting on 31x10.5's tomorrow, but want to do an 2" lift as well. This will be my DD, so ride comfort is a consideration.

I wish I could weld. The Coastal gear looks nice. I could weld but i have no garage or yard and live on the second floor. My T4R is homeless and sleeps on the City streets. One of the first mods I made was a chain and lock for the hood, so I have safer storage for a few tools and spare keys and whatnot.

Did you get the 31s on yet? I'm also going to 31x10.5s pretty soon. From the door jamb code, it looks like I've got the taller 4.10 gears - shouldn't be too noticeable, right?
