Orderd a 5th Gen, what is the expected wait?

Regarding the previous responses on dealers not returning calls and such:
I basically went through that whole ordeal myself. Funny thing is thing that similar to those recently posting, I am also located in TX (Bryan area). I called all the dealers in Houston (150 m radius from down town) and None..None had the options I was looking for....
I also called ~4 in Austin and None had the model I wanted. Its nuts. I finally went back to my local dealer and placed the order.

I should add that I contacted a dealer in the Conroe area and they said they would "find it for me" and they got back to once saying that the model I want is not available in the whole state. They said they would try but never got back to me after that.

So I guess "special order" was my only option. For this reason I figured either production or inventory on the runners is weak or I must have some distinctly unique taste or something. No ofence to any one but why the heck are there so many 4X2 limiteds and no 4x4 sr5's???
I figured they would market this car for people who would want less bells and whistles and more utility (cargo/people/off road).

any how I will patiently wait...

1. A three month wait is pretty normal for a "special order". Your regional distributor dictates what's readily available on the dealer lots. Most dealers will not want to deal with the hassle of transporting a vehicle cross country.

2. You cannot get any color or option that's not available for that trim. Meaning you can't put KDSS on a Limited or get 4WD 4-cyl, or even get a SR5 with 20" rims or Limited with 17" wheels. All a "special order" really means in context of Toyotas is you're getting a Toyota with the options you do and don't want that aren't normally on the dealers' lot in your region.

3. Before the recall, rumor was Toyota has cut 4Runner production down to prevent excessive inventory. Don't think the recalls are affecting production.

regarding your responses:


1. Ok.... so basically cross country swap is not a "standard book procedure", My dad bought (albeit 20 years ago) an 4X4 runner in VA. Long story short, because of the color and options he wanted they ended up bringing in one from PA. So i guess either that is no longer applicable or the distance there is not so bad...But thanks for shedding light on this.

2. I figured...wishfully thinking on my part....so that means I should be getting a salsa red.

3. The dealer alluded to something like this.... I believed it kind of slipped on him because he never repeated it again...but I thought I herd him say once that production had been cut low.....but I it would make sense that the recall is not making it worse.


P.S. I asked my dealer whether my option was unique..and he said definitely YES.....he said something to the extent that in TX the 4X4 is just not that popular..throw the 3rd row option in and it makes it worse....he said he was also anxious to see it, being so rare!!! (he could be just saying that to throw me bone)

Metallic Gray with the black leather.

P.S. I asked my dealer whether my option was unique..and he said definitely YES.....he said something to the extent that in TX the 4X4 is just not that popular..throw the 3rd row option in and it makes it worse....he said he was also anxious to see it, being so rare!!! (he could be just saying that to throw me bone)

I had no idea that it a 4x4 SR5 would be considered rare. In fact, I didn't even know that you could buy a 4x2 4Runner. When I helped my parents buy a new 4Runner up north in 2000 I think everything on the lot was 4x4. Anyways, I had been checking all over North Texas for 4x4 SR5 with leather with no success, they just don't seem to be sending them here. I can't imagine looking for one with a third row.

Yup, pretty much what you want isn't what is normally available in the Texas region. Check in with your sales rep after a month and half or so. By then he or she should know if your "special order" has been accepted by the factory. After two months, check in with the sales rep on a weekly basis and he or she should be able to tell you when it's arriving at port. Toyota's system for special orders is really primative.

I know what the wait feels like. I special ordered my '06.

Pretty much what the regional distributor decided for your area. In '06, the only 2WD 4Runners were SR5. Every Sport Edition and Limited were 4WD.

Yeah what you say is exactly how things are unfolding, I went to the dealer in person this last weekend and he re-assured me that the order was definitely placed and that Toyota had confirmed that they had received the order. SO i guess that means that the runner is somewhere between being a bunch of binary code in the factory computer registry, being welded by robots or being finalized and rolled out of the assembly line and parked somewhere...

He did say that he has no way of telling what is going on until the car is on the ship.....then he can update me on a regular basis of where it is!

which begs the question, are the cars stored for some time before they are put on the ship....(they must load them in batches) if so how long is this??

and how long does the shipping take from Tahara Japan to the U.S.??? and For TX, which port do they arrive at???

Since I was interested in the 3rd row, and also Blizzard Pearl with Beige seats, I needed a special order. I was first told 6 to 8 weeks, if they could find one as I wanted it. Then I was advised the special order would take between 2 to 4 months. I placed the order on October 21st, received the vehicle (the way I wanted it) on February 5th. The wait turned out to be 15+ weeks. Of course, within days our Weather produced 2 successive Blizzards. I must say, the wait was well worth it.

Maybe I missed who posted the message above.

Here's the time line for my '06. I talked to my sales rep back in October 2005 to discuss of what I was looking for. He ran a search across all dealers in the US for it and it didn't exist. In early November 2005, he put in the request (aka special order) into the dealer's system to preference exactly what I wanted. This system shows the vehicle allocations of trim and configuration of what's in transit and coming to the dealer. In mid-December 2005, he got confirmation from in the system that the preference request has been accepted. In early February 06, my 4Runner was heading into port. IIRC, I think it takes about four days or so for the vehicle to be prepped (printing the window sticker, etc) and loaded onto the carrier trucks to the dealer. Around Feb 7th or so, they secured the VIN for it and I went to the dealer to start paperwork for it. This was to prevent another dealer from seeing my configuration and diverting the vehicle from port to their lot. I took delivery on the Feb 19th. I probably could've gotten it a few days earlier, but I was out of town, which was killing me, because someone could be messing with my 4Runner as it sat on the lot. But it was handed to me with one mile on the odometer and after it got a full tank of gas. :frog: :dancin:

Next to the "quote" button, on the right, there's a button with a " " and +". Click on that button with the various posts (from different members) you want to quote and it'll turn red and the "+" will change to a "-". Then click the "quote" button or the "post reply" button at the bottom and your reply box will have the various posts quoted.

OK thanks for this data point, it sounds like I may be a little under half the wait then.... I just have to forget about it for a while and then it will come...kind of like boiling water. If you keep looking it never boils...

in my particular case I want a salsa red ...which By the way I have yet to see in this forum....(I could have missed it though)

I would get the black which just now seems to be available (how I want it) in a few dealerships in the area, but my wife will simply not budge on this.....In fact I had to work hard to get her to accept the runner as an option period...she keeps saying we should have gotten the highlander.....

Talked to my dealer this morning and...... My name is on a 4runner on its way to the port in Houston. Exact options I wanted without all the protection package garbage they always throw on. Should be in my driveway early March.:jump:

SR5 Classic Silver, Premium Package, Sunroof, DJ package, Tint, Carpet, Exhaust Tip

I am going to investigate this right away.

Question: would it be good practice if I were to ask my dealer to ask for a swap??? Or should I bypass my dealer and talk directly to them?? the reason I ask is because I already put a deposit down and have an Agreed price, which based on the posts I have seen here is pretty darn good...

where do you go on the main toyota website to access that search page...because if I go to the mentioned dealers website It does not pop up in their inventory???
