paddlenbike's Build Thread

That's what I thought when I read your build thread. Yours looks great.

Supercharged 5-speed versus two N/A 5-speeds and an Automatic.

Hahaha awesome! And thanks! I can't wait to hit up silver lake up by me :P this guy was out there showing people whats up lol:

Great build so far! I love all the LED lighting. I am looking for options for getting more light in my footwells and on the back hatch, so this is very inspirational. Thanks for posting up all this.

Since I see this hasn't been updated in a little while.. any new mods recently? Any updates on your rig? Nice work. :yo:

Thank you for the complements. I actually haven't changed one thing as I really like it in it's current state. My only real desire is an HID projector headlight upgrade and custom LED side markers to match. The yellowish incandescent forward lighting is really the only thing that makes a 3rd gen look dated, in my opinion.

Do you have a build thread? If not, time to start one! :)

hah thanks! Yeah, Ive been seeing some really good Projector builds. I'm sure you'll piece together a fantastic one as well.

No build thread for mine yet. Just got it last month and so far only swapped some regular bulbs for LED replacements and ditched my running boards. Not really "build" material just yet. ;) I will sometime in the near future though.

For the past couple of years I have had a boost gauge and wideband gauge hanging out in the glovebox while I decided where to put them in my interior. I ruled out pillar pods just to keep the stealth look going, and I have realized that the boost gauge just isn't something I need. I reads 7 psi at sea level and less as I climb in elevation, and there isn't much reason to look at it.

The wideband, however, is a really useful tuning tool, and I do glance at it on occasion to make sure the engine is holding its tune (it does). I decided to mount it in the open space next to the accessory outlets. It goes black when it's turned off, so it is not noticeable when the truck is parked.

I have the URD 7th injector kit with the upgraded fuel pump, so the engine is 100% ready for a smaller pulley and more boost, but I keep telling myself "leave it be, it has enough power." But I'd really like to see what an extra couple of pounds of boost does to this thing. Hmm...

I've always thought that would be the best place for a wideband gauge. Nice install and you might as well get more boost if you can....

My wife does crash injury potential work for a consulting firm and she tells me stories about car accidents where loose cargo is the cause for injuries and deaths as opposed to the actual car accident itself. Hearing these stories was enough to encourage me to do something about it. Now that we have our first newborn baby riding with us, addressing this issue was moved up the priority list.

I realized there were some very specific places I needed tie-down points to secure our camping gear. I usually place the ice chest and kitchen stuff (packed in an Action Packer) between the wheelwells, so I wanted to secure those with a strap across the center of both. Previously I used the four factory tie-down points in an X-pattern, but it was a pain getting to the rear cargo loops and everything in the cargo area was a different height and thus not very secure.

I discovered that Jeep Wranglers do not come from the factory with any cargo loops (surprise surprise) and the popular Jeep mod is to use 4Runner tie down loops. The 4Runner loops have friction in them and don't flop around and make noise like many of the other aftermarket cargo loops, so I bought eight more (!!) and started installing them where they were needed.

One added on each wheel well:

Inside the wheelwell I installed a small 2x3" 16 gauge steel backing plate between the body and the nut on the bottom. It's more reinforcing than the factory used and if you were in a really bad accident it would help prevent the nut and washer from pulling through the sheet metal.

I have a few more going in on the floor of the backseat area to secure other heavy items like our water jug and daycooler.

Hopefully if the unthinkable happens, we will be a little more protected from our heavy cargo.

Nice work! I added a 5th tie down to mine a while ago which I use to mount my drawer system in the trunk.

Great build! You may have posted somewhere in your thread but I was wondering what perch you have your front 5100's set on? I know a lot of people are running the second from the bottom with the 890??

Second perch from the bottom is perfect with the OME 890s.

Did some weekend high elevation with friends.

We had an animal stalking us all night while we sat around the campfire. We kept hearing something in the forest, and it would move to different positions, sometimes in front of us and behind us at other times. Shining our flashlights would reveal a set of beaty eyes staring at us. Creepy. Later we discovered it was a curious deer, but we spent a good deal of time thinking we were being stalked by a mountain lion, haha. Good times.

Great job with the wheel well. Your wife is totally right BTW. I have a friend who joined us on the trail in his Tacoma. He was carrying around a filled bbq propane tank, not tied down, just rolling around in the back of his bed while on the trail. Now it would seem he's a complete idiot but he's actually smart. He's does the finances at our company and seems pretty good at his job. Needless to say, I helped him tie it down with some rope.

On another note, I saw the pictures you just posted on the views from a third gen thread. Is that death valley? Where were you?

Thanks!

Pretty much anything in the cargo area (or bed of a truck) can become a projectile in an accident.

The pictures you asked about are from DV. One was taken by Geologist's cabin and the second was at the top of Dante's View.
