Pressure Monitoring Valve Stems

One of my valve cores was bent so much that I could not fill it without forcing things with a screwdriver or key. Another valve core would have the tendency to not sit right and slowly leak air. If you played with that one it eventually held air.

Decided to take it to 2 tire shops and both said to go back to the dealer. So I go to the dealer and they say 3 of the 4 are done and replacement costs for the 3 would be $553 but would cut me a break to $500 even. :wtf:

I use my 4Runner on the beach so salt water probably caused my problems but that appears to be a design flaw and way too much money. He explained they need to pull tire off, reload and then reprogram.

I am thinking this is my only vehicle I have ever had with TPMS so who needs it. Thinking the 4th valve core was probably on the way out, I asked if he could just replace them with good old rubber valve stems. He said sure but the low pressure light would remain on. I told him to go that route and he charged me $80.

Was this an OK decision or was I being too cheap? From the looks of the other posts, it appears others have had some issues but I never saw someone posting 3 bad stems. I don't mind checking the air pressure every once in a while and certainly didn't want to dump $500. I joked with the service rep that the timing belt job was cheaper. Doesn't make sense.

sounds about right! I'd call some junk yards and see if there are any wrecked yotas there, as long as the wheel was made out of the same material it should fit. i believe aluminum versus steel has different angles that the stem comes out at. as long as the sensors from the wrecked vehicle weren't damaged i bet they could be reprogrammed to your TPMS ECU! don't know how you'd get them out of the wrecked vehicles wheels though!!! but those sensors are expensive!

just pull out the tpms and put regular valve stems in. wont mess up the system and do you really use the tpms? really, its just a pita imo

Set of 4 TPMS valves for T4R on tirerack is $188. You need to find out if you can buy them without tires and rims. I don't see why not though.

That's what I did and the more I think about it the more I like the idea of not having to spend the big buck$$ and not having to worry about replacing them again. Sometimes the new technology isn't better.

and to eliminate the light you can place them in a pressurized pvc tube and leave it with the jack, comp still thinks they are in this way

how long does the TPMS battery last ?

is the whole wheel sensor transmitter thing, or all four, done for when the batt dies ?

i beleive there is a fuse for the light on your dash so if you just take out that fuse you wont have to worry about it

from what i understand u cant just pull a fuse or tpms module, it is linked to the ecu & will think theres a problem somewhere & still send out an error. but u can do a wire bypass.

or you can put black electrical tape over the light. or smash each monitor hahaha jk

u can take the dash apart & clip out the bulb too, either way, technically it may be illegal to mess with a tpms system.

In less than 20 mins you can deactivate the whole system, and never see the blinking light again. You don't need to change out the stems they work as is for filling up the tire with air, why complicate it. The change is reversable if needed, it's just grounding 1 wire.

I was in the same boat, somehow 3 sensors went bad, and a $768 quote from Toyota pushed me to see the light. TPMS = disabled.

You can't pull the fuse. Unless you don't mind if your power windows, sunroof, stability control system and a bunch of other stuff doesn't work either

Use the following thread for a guide. You don't need to install a switch but can, I just grounded the pink/black wire to a metal screw 6" away that attached to the body.

If you want to re-enable the system, just remove the grounded wire.
