I agree, I also think it would look wierd with red and amber turn signals blinking at the same time, but that's just me.
What bulbs are people using to deal with the heat issue? LEDs?
What LED bulb #? Again, I'm just looking for a bulb that will work with tails and brakes.
I posted earlier that I was just interested in tails only, I keep going back and forth. But, I know I don't want turns.

I am using 1157 red LED's from http://www.superbrightleds.com/

I am using them only as tail lights...they do not get brighter with the brakes, and they do not blink with the blinkers...I have plenty of brake lights and blinkers (especially with the mirror turn signals)

Install was straight forward...havent had any issue with using the led's, they are bright and match the tail lights

btw, I dont think white LED's would do well through a red lens...you are always supposed to use a LED the same color as the lens (wavelength of color issue)

explicit steps for JUST tail/stop lights

Thanks to all who have contributed to this topic; especially fo'runner and Kmvreter!

I am getting ready to this modification, but only for the tail/stop lights; could someone who has done this successfully please post a list of the exact steps they followed? I do not have any experience with this type of thing and hope someone could provide a numbered list of the steps for the tail/stop light mod.

Just thought I would let everyone know that I started this mod over the weekend. Unfortunately I didn't get everything finished due to some unexpected guests and a few other commitments.

I am doing something a wee bit different. I'm using a guide from when I had a VW and on the drivers side I will be wiring in two power sources. One will be from the trailer wiring harness as normal so that when I hit the brakes there will be a brighter light. The other power source will be from the fogs so that I have a true rear fog light.

The guide I'm using includes two Radio Shack Diodes so that current from one or the other source won't feedback into the other circuit.

The passenger side will be just as described here. In the U.S. you can only have rear fog on the drivers side which is why I'm doing the mod this way.

I'll post pics when I get it finished up which will hopefully be this weekend.

Yes, I did read your detailed and excellent first post a while back; I should have acknowledged you and Billf6531 among others for getting the ball rolling and really helping those interested.

Your post is very helpful, however I was not aware that you edited it with regard to making the modification for JUST tail and stop lights .... at present it appears that the "just tail/stop lights" mod is only dealt with within the last few pages of this thread AND so my initial note on this thread earlier today is asking for someone who has made the "just tail/stop lights" mod to merge their steps with your original steps in your fabulous format so it is very clear for those of us who are unfamiliar with auto mods.

If you or someone else has done this sort of merge already please direct me to it and disregard my posts.

In order to have BRAKE LIGHTS ONLY, you'll need to tap wires elsewhere, as tapping into the trailer connector provides combined stop/turn functionality. Check your email for a diagram.

Frank8 - I assume you read over the post on p. 12 from fo'runner.
The way he did it seems to be one of the most clean and secure ways of doing brakes and tails only.
That's the way I'm doing mine. Wiring up the plugs with connectors is kind of a PITA though.

I have some 7443 LED bulbs and trying to find connectors for those ones. I tried with the one you used for 4157/3157, but they doesn't fix properly. So any ideas how to use 7443 LED and where can I find connectors like yours for my bulbs?

No idea about making the 7443 bulb fit but I ordered my toyota connectors and sockets from the local stealer.

Do you remember from which part was those connectors? Dealer is asking for model and where in the wiring these connectors should be.

The 90080-11020 number is the connector(you have to wire it)
The 90075-60060 number is the bulb socket.
They are parts for the DRL's.
I purchased 2 of each from the stealer and it was about $45.
After I got them I checked Partznet and found I could've got them for about half that price.

DRL is 3157. Is those part numbers for 3157?

he just said that they are the same socket and connector as the DRL in the front. 3157 is the bulbs type.

3157 and 4157 are exchangeable.
I have 7443 LEDs and needs sockets for them. I just do not want to buy extra 4157 which will cost me $40-45 with shipment. But I couldn't find sockets for 7443, and this is becoming a problem.

yea, they are glue on just like any other light. just stick them in the oven and they come apart.

OK, I'm trying to disassemble my tail lights, using the oven method. It doesn't seem to be working.

I have the oven at 350, turn it off. Then sit the tail lights in there for about 5 minutes. They don't want to give at all.

Any suggestions?

Just to elaborate a little on this. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

TRD04RUNNER is running only parking lights using the smaller wedge type (12V 5W) bulbs. The dimmer filament on the 7443 is ~7W. This is why the lights look pretty close in brightness (from TRD04RUNNER's photos). I'm sure that these bulbs will not get as hot as the 7443 or the 4157, but they willl get hotter than the corresponding LEDs. So, the real question would be if there was any heat related damage using this bulb.

If one is looking to use stop and parking lights, a double filament bulb will need to be used and this 12V 5W bulb would not be an option. One would be forced to look at a physically larger, dual-filament bulb. 3 options come to mind: 1157, 3157/4157, or 7443. I think the end result would be the same with any of these bulbs, but all you have to worry about is matching up the bulb with the socket.

For anyone that has done this mod, was there any bulb that would not physically fit in the hole/tube of the housing fixture? If not, than I think that any of these bulbs could be used.

Here is another thing I was wondering about. Heat seems to be a pretty big problem when in close contact with the plastic tube on the fixture. Others have warned to cut more off the tube so the bulb is pushed closer to the lens and away from the plastic. I wonder if there are any sockets that are similar to the ones that hold our front parking lights in place. If they had something similar for the dual-filament bulbs, this could do the trick while removing minimal material from the foglight housing.

Any input/thoughts?

A couple weeks ago, I completed this mod for brake and tail lights. I used the 4157 dual filament bulbs in the sockets that are used in the fronts for the DRLs. No cutting of the "tube" is necessary as the bulbs go in these sockets pretty far and so far I see no heat issues at all. They very closely match the regular tail lights, basically exactly.
See the post by fo'runner a couple pages back. He explains the exact procedure. This is how I did mine. I love'em.
