I just wanted to thank you guys. Especially Kmvreter. I ordered all the stuff he did and the job was a snap. I really like the way it looks and turned out.

I think the Superbright LED website addresses the turn signal/parking light concern you and others are talking about. It offers a solution of either trying a heavy duty flasher relay or possibly using a load resistor kit to imitate the power usage of a filament bulb.

If you put a resistor into the parking light circuit, I wonder if the power from the car will overcome the resistor when you WANT the parking lights to come on. The resistors sold on superbright LEDs are for vehicles where the only power is going to LED lights which flash. In OUR 4runners, power is also being fed to our regular halogen turn signals, which "eats up" enough of the power so that the LEDs do not behave strangely. I wish I ordered one from superbright LEDs before though, just to see if this would work.

I can finally post. I did the regular bulb approach using 3057 bulbs. I found right angle plastic sockets at NAPA. I cut off about 0.4" of the round receptacle of the housing to get the lamp in deep enough to get heat well into the reflector cavity. Once you cut the end the internal hole is 25.5mm. My sockets were 26.0mm and with some work, I made these fit securely yet removable.
ksneubec may be on to what's happening with the LED problem. If the turn signal from one side is cross feeding into the tail light of the other sie, I suggest to try the following:
Put a 1 amp diode [a 1N400x from Radio Shack] forward biased in line to each tail lamp. This means the banded end (cathode) go to the filament side and the anode sides of the two diodes are common to the tail light feed. These two diodes will block cross feeding currents if this be the case.

Great write-up on how you did the mod. I bought the parts myself to attempt the same, but I'm having a heck of a time locating some 4157 bulbs. Where did you buy them?
I tried using 3157 bulbs, thinking that the sockets were the same, but they didn't fit.

Thanks. Found them at Canadian Tire (the equivalent of PepBoys or AutoZone.) The ones I got are GE brand name so maybe they can order them or check around at auto parts distributor/counter shops (that supply the local garages.) As a last resort try a Toy or GM stealership.

I'm thinking of adding building a printed circuit board with a bunch of LEDs. Then drive the LEDs with a PWM so I could use it as a tail and brake light.
Does anyone know if the lens on these pops off? So I could get in there to mount the PCB?
It looks like it does, but I haven't taken mine off the truck yet, so I'm not sure.

I've been reading this thread with a lot of interest, although I haven't read all 10 pages so maybe I missed it. But, no one seems to be talking about just making the reflectors into tail/brake lights only.
I don't really want an orange and a red turn signal. Has anyone wired it this way?
I don't know a lot about electricity or voltages, but can a bulb of lower watage be used to help with the heat issue?
And speaking of the heat issue, some of you guys that have been running lights in the reflectors for awhile, is there some melting of the plastic?
I'm very interested in doing tail/brake lights but don't want to cause electrical problems due to heat. I know some have tried LEDs, but they seem to have their own set of problems.

I personally run these lights as rear markers.... so they are bright and always on. I also have it on a switch so that I can turn it off.

Does not blink. You might want to hook it up to a switch up front so that if you want to turn it off.. you can. I have the part numbers located futhur up this thread.

OK I found some wedge bulbs and socket from a Honda i use to have and took out the 4R light and drill the hole to fit the light socket and use the blue speaker connector and gray speaker wire to wirer them . \
I could not have drill the hole any better! The socket fit perfectly and snug without and glue or anything to hold them in place! after I did that I install the light back on and wirer them to the green and white wire on the back trailer plug for parking only. The lower parking light match the top parking light perfectly and these bulbs are only 5w /12v a piece!! The best thing about this mod is that it did not cost me a penny! found everything I needed laying in the garage!

I've been really impressed with the number of folks who have followed the write up and performed (and improved upon) this mod!
I'll be out in the Greenbelt, MD and surrounding area next week (May 16-19) and will keep my eye out for T4R.ORG stickers and rigs w/ the light mod. Do we have any members out in that area? Unfortunately, I'll be stuck in a midsize rental car while I'm there.

Exactly what I'm looking for, tail lights only. Good job.
The Honda Part# is 89799 . The wedge sockets is off a 98-02 accord parking light in the front headlight. It the part that light up orange on the headlight.
