Rear Differential Breather Mod For Dummies

Going to install the breather this weekend. I'm split on where i should put/install it, in the rear of the engine bay or in the rear compartment where the stock lift-jack is stored (inside the rear cargo area).

Do any T4R members have their rear diff breather installed inside their runner or will i be the first?

All of the other breathers are installed up in the engine firewall. The rear differential and rear locker (for Trail Edition/TRDOff Road/TRDPro) are the only ones that would potentially need to be relocated.

I am just under 3 years of having mine located in the jack compartment and have not had any smell or concerns with mine located there. :trophy:

I had mine vented into the jack compartment and never had an issue with odor until the dealership replaced an axle seal. For some reason at that time the odor became apparent. I then relocated the breathers into the gas fill area which vented the breathers to the outside. No more odor. The only thing I could figure was that the smell came into the cabin when the differential was refilled following the repair. Another possibility was that the new lubricant was more pungent than the original fill.

I should only need to do the rear dif and my e-locker right? The front dif already has a two way breather installed. (2016 Trail)

I did this mod with the arb kit today. We leave for a two week camping trip and hoping to get some off reading in while we are out. Wanted peace of mind so ordered the kit and installed in the passenger side of the engine bay. Seems like a well built kit and ran the line easily. Impressed with the quality and hopefully gives me a little protection of getting water into rear differential

I did this mod a few months ago and ran it to the drivers side engine bay. I have been offroad several times and after the last time noticed the line hanging down, it had melted and split. I had it tucked above the heat shield on the driver's side front but obviously not good enough even with zip ties. I had enough line left to run it to the jack compartment so I thought cool. Well, I smelled the oil from the diff every time I turn the ac on recirculation mode. It seems to be getting better after a few days, but maybe I'm getting used to it. I want to run it to the engine bay again, but am curious if anyone has ran it to the jack compartment and noticed the smell of oil. Also, any suggestions in the future?

mines been there for about 3 weeks. no smell and we use the AC a lot in Texas

That's' interesting as mine has been up there for a year and looks the same as when I installed it. I'm curious if part of the line was actually contacting the shield at some point. I personally have not heard of a hose failure before with this kit.

Doing the same, minus the snorkel. Passenger side of the engine bay, behind the airbox seems to be where I am going to place the apparatus. Will possibly tie the other four in as well, to ease my OCD.

That's exactly where I put mine and was able to route it relatively easily and away from any heat source that would melt the tubing. I can take pictures if you're interested to show what it looks like there

If you wouldn't mind... The kit is due to arrive sometime tomorrow.

By chance, were you able to get the apparatus to thread in anywhere on the vertical walls of that side of the engine bay?

Yes I got a 1/4" x 1.5" (I think that was the size) stainless bolt from the hardware store and threaded that into the existing hole in the engine bay and used a self tapping screw in the other hole of the apparatus to really secure it. You could probably do with just the one threaded bolt but I didn't want to take any chances. I wil snap a couple pictures tomorrow when it's light out

Your thoughts / knowledge needed regarding the route i chose for my ARB breather tubing up front.

In my photo you are looking at two separate runs inside the loom, but my thought was to stay away from the muffler pipe and stay on outside of frame rail. I ran the lines between the frame and body right next to the frame / body mount.

Good? Bad? Is there much flex / movement here that could pinch and or damage the lines?

I just answered your pm. There are hopefully others that can chime in on how your run of the loom can be affected by frame flex, as I honestly don't have a definitive answer. I ran mine from the engine bay down past the the fender liner and attaching to the other lines in the inside of the frame rail (see pics on first page of this thread). I will try and send more pics when I get a chance.

Installed my kit this weekend. Thanks [MENTION=120701]Cymon[/MENTION] for the great write up, it made this mod super easy.

One suggestion, don't install when the heat index is 103...
