Rear Differential Breather Mod For Dummies

Any problem with oil smell in the cabin?Just did the diff breather mod over the weekend. After parking at my work garage this morning, I noticed a weird smell (melted plastic). I remembered that I hadn't made sure my connections over the heat shield under the driver's side door / fender was tight. So...pretty sure I had melted my line, I popped the hood and sure enough the melted hose was free-floating in my engine compartment.
So, I'm going to approach the re-install using [MENTION=153412]theShaytoon[/MENTION] 's method utilizing the back left wheel well. I did a quick dirty diagram of my previous approach and the new method, and added some JB weld to my Amazon cart:

I have enough remaining line from the ARB kit to complete the mod. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to wait until the weekend as I street park and don't feel like getting run over this week. But I'll update when I finish everything up.
Especially excited to pull the dead line out in my work parking lot...the shame...

I've routed mine into my bottle jack compartment. No oil smell.

no oil smell. I had a melted plastic smell for a while, but that was due to my original screw up lol

2+ years no issues. Just be sure it is tucked up and out of the way of the heat shields to not contact them.
if you're going to be doing serious water you should use dielectric grease on electrical connections, including waterproof connections

I've had mine there for about a year and a half also and at first smelled it when the AC was on recirc mode. I changed the cabin air filter to a k and n and sometimes THINK I can smell it with AC on. It still bugs me a little on longer drives, but maybe I'm just expecting it and imagining it.

I've seen installations where the ARB snorkel is installed INSIDE the cabin, in the jack compartment; and obviously mounted in the engine bay. But I really liked the installations where the hoses came through the Fuel Cap compartment, but they could not use the snorkel.
I really did not want to run the hose all the to the engine compartment as I knew I would have it close to something that would melt the crap out of it. I also wanted to have the Air Locker hose to have the same connection/routing as the Diff...
So here is how I did it.
You can buy little vacuum hose adapters from AutoZone... $4. They connect the Air Locker Hose and the ARB hose PERFECTLY, but I used a couple of ZIP ties to secure them anyway.
Removed the mud flap and the wheel-well liner. I think there were 8 clips and 4 screws. Ran the two ARB hoses right alongside the metal fuel line.
You can see in this picture how the hoses/zip-ties actually "hold up" the snorkel. I used some 3M double sided to hold the snorkel in place while the JB Weld cured. Couple more ZIP-ties, and done!
Only other thing needed besides the ARB kit was the vacuum hose adapters and the JB weld. There is PLENTY of left over hose from the kit. I think it was a pretty clean install, so I wanted to share with yall. Let me know what you think...
Hello [MENTION=153412]theShaytoon[/MENTION] I really like your idea for placing the manifold at this spot. I’m not sure I want it permanently there with the JB Weld though. Do you have any alternatives that would be as strong but removable later without drilling? Would a 3M VHB tape work? Sorry, never worked on a vehicle before let alone mod one.

Two years in and it's still tucked back there...The JB weld is a VERY tiny amount...maybe two drops the size of Sunflower Seeds...
The Yellow stuff you see between the body panel and the Snorkel is an industrial double sided tape like the 3MVHB...if you want to nix the JB weld, you should be fine. Just remember that if you take the 4runner off road, and you travel trough Bone Jarring terrain, the extra security of JB weld is worthwhile...
ALSO...I would not consider JBweld PERMANENT...I bet I could twist the snorkel off the body and the JB would be left behind on the body panel. Remember to clean the area with alcohol before trying to stick the 3M tape.

Are people doing both the diff breather and e-locker with the kit? I was under the assumption that we only needed to do the diff breather for driving through deeper water.

Had my buddy print me up a spacer so I could use the existing threaded holes on the fender, worked like a charm.

I just used 1 existing threaded hole on the passenger side behind the air intake (closer to firewall) I threw 3m double sided tape on, lined up where the one hole was, and stuck it. Honestly I don't think it was going anywhere with just the 3m alone, but I put an m5 or m6 (can't remember now) bolt in just to be safe.
I thought about the 3M tape as an option, but wasnt sure how it would be over long term or if hitting some rough terrain.
You threw a bolt through the tape?
Earlier on page 9 or 10 someone else has a picture of a single vertical piece of metal with a single bolt into one of the existing bolt holes (its an M8), but again, with a single bolt I worry about it bouncing around. Although I have the material to do this one so may do it if I cant get a better option.
I tried to put together something with a piece of metal, but the bolt holes on the breather are 1.25inches apart and the bolt holes are 2 inches apart, so was just too challenging to bend it to fit well, so I gave up.

Put the 3m on like this
Then I cleaned up the area well with isopropyl alcohol, put the bolt through the bracket, and started threading it a few turns, then made sure it was level and pushed down. I honestly tugged on it a bit before even snugging the bolt down and it wasn't coming off without some heat and probably fishing string (think debadging a trunk). Then I just snugged the bolt up. A lot happier then drilling and doing self tap screws.
