Schrockworks/Rock Road Rock Rail Install ?

Hey Guys,

A question for anyone who has had Schrockwork's Rock Rails or Rocky Road Outfitter's "Super Sliders" installed on their 5th generation SR5 or Ttrail Edition:

1. Can Schrock's Rock Rails or RRO's Super Sliders be installed without having to remove the factory mud flaps.

2. Do either of these extend outward and upward enough to actually prevent dents and dinks from car doors, etc.

3. In your experience, are either (or both) of these fairly resistant to denting, paint flaking and corrosion (I live in Michigan and we salt our roads five months a year, depending)?

I have contacted both companies and in reference to question No. 1 above I was informed that they (the company) "thinks" that the mud flaps would have to be permanently discarded. As I have no real interest in "serious" off roading, and because I live about 1.5 miles away from the nearest paved road, mud flaps definitely serve a purpose on my daily muddy-road commute.

Any insight would be tremendously appreciated. My reality is, my new 4R will be far more likely to incur damage from another car door or some other parking lot hazard moreso than from any off-roading mishap (I mainly stick to 2-track trails and fire roads). Will be ordering either an SR5 or Trail Edition this coming Thursday night. Actually, I've already placed the order for an SR5, but I asked my sales agent to hold off on placing the order to give me a few days to get the Trail Edition completely out of my head.

Shrockworks:
Trail: Works Fine
SR5/Limited: Rocker panels need to be cut or removed

2. Do either of these extend outward and upward enough to actually prevent dents and dinks from car doors, etc.
Shrockworks:
Car doors: Yes
Other SUV: No (otherwise your own doors would not be able to open either)

3. In your experience, are either (or both) of these fairly resistant to denting, paint flaking and corrosion (I live in Michigan and we salt our roads five months a year, depending)?
Shrockworks:
Doing just fine here in Indiana. Mine are powder coated

See red above. I can't speak for Rocky Road; don't own those.

From my experience (2010 TE):

I know they would not fit on mine with the Husky mudflaps (which are now collecting dust in my garage)

I would have to say no, and I even bumped my out as much as possible with custom aluminum pads between the frame and slider bracket. It might protect against very very low cars (miata, vett, etc), but nothing normal

Mine are already showing signs of rust, I plan to take a closer look next month, only at certain weld areas. They are powder coated.

I have the RR SR5 version.

All this is pertaining to RR, no Schrock.

Yes, however I cant speak for the SR5, only TE

50/50 on this, they do technically stick out beyond the door so it would provide some protection but not a ton

Mine arrived with a couple dings in the paint, and have some rust. I'm ok with that because I was already planning to put bedliner on them.


My thoughts
-consider Bud Built, their stuff seems great (and if you are looking for protection their seem to extend the furthest)
-RR's (and I believe Shrock's also) tube extension is quite narrow, to the point of lending itself to slipping if used as a step, that's one of the reasons Im planning to line x them.
-I wouldn't do any serious offroading without them.

westwind77 - Do you have any pictures of your SR5 with the RR installed? I am about to pull the trigger on those and am having problems finding any good examples.

Or if anyone has some shots of an LE with the Rocky Road Supersliders please share.

To answer your PM, the install was fairly simple, but I did use 2 hydraulic floor jacks, one at each side/end to help. If you 'twist' the sliders you can slip the plate in behind the brackets/cables and not have to remove anything. I did have one issue, the instructions they provided were wrong, essentially telling you to put the right on the left and the left on the right based on which side has the arm closest to the front. From what I have seen they corrected it (after a couple phone calls and e-mails to them). I also padded mine out with plates as much as I could against the frame, but I did that a little while back, the photos show as original.
