Scraped my car! Can I fix it?

Hi,

I have a 2014 Limited 4Runner - my first 4Runner! Anyway, I was just parking my car about 10 minutes ago and had trouble because someone decided to park their car in front of my garage. I thought I could maneuver my car in and I was being extremely careful, but unfortunately I still scraped my car for it's very first ding. The scrape is on the Passenger Side Rear Fender.

Anyway, looking at it, it appears the parts that are damaged are plastic and clipped on. I don't think there's any major damage to the car in general. I was actually wondering if anyone on this forum could help me determine if it's something I could simply replace (snap off scraped parts and snap on new parts). I attached a few pictures of the damage.

I searched online for replacement parts, and I think I found one of the parts needed to replace it (but I think it's for the drivers side, and not passenger side). Here is the link:

Anyway, so what I'm hoping for is someone to help me with:

1) Can this be replaced easily as in just swapping parts?
2) What parts do I need?
3) Please make sure that the parts are correct (for 2014 Limited 4Runner for Passenger rear fender).

^Sorry I had to like the this comment.

But yes, looks like no real damage. I would just replace the mouldings even if there was slight panel damage.

Hey man,

I'm sorry if you found that offensive. I didn't know any better, but I promise I'll learn. Right now, what happened is making me feel really low right now, so I'm hoping that maybe we can just focus on trying to help me instead of making me feel even worse than I already do.

That looks like the correct part to me. I am not sure if those come color matched, or if you will need to get them painted after the fact.

I don't think they do come painted. But it doesn't look like a special paint so a body shop should be able to source the flares, color match, clear coat, and reinstall.

It sucks, I know, opened my rear right door and scuffed some paint on the bottom edge. Not nearly the damage you did, but it's just a thing. Easily fixable with time/money.

Don't let it ruin your week.

oh no.... I took no offense at all... your 4runner did! lol Just get the new trim piece, paint it and slap it on. If that douchebag is still blocking your garage go slit his tires or loosen his lugs
 
I would say no you can't fix it properly. Looks like that clip is all but ripped out and deformed. Removing the damaged pieces without damaging the other clips may prove challenging. Plus you have some damage behind that moulding that will require some body work to allow the new pieces to fit correctly. I suggest you bite the bullet and let a reputable body shop do the repair and repaint.

It looks like a shadow to me and a new fender, paint and some clips and he is back in business.
 
Agreed it's hard to really tell from the pics. However, there are two pieces damaged. If they have to be primed and painted it's going to be tough for the OP to match on his own. I suppose it's worth a shot and use a body shop as a last resort.

Or plasti-dip the fenders on the other three and just use plasti-dip to paint. I think it looks nice with the black matte on the grey. I dipped all 4 of mine and it looks fair and would be cheaper for OP. Or he can drop off the pieces to be painted at a body shop and install himself for probably no more than a few hundred.

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke to my brother and he gave me some really good perspective on things. He said first of all it's just a truck. Maybe I'll get flamed for saying that, but in the end there are more important things in life. He said I'm lucky I didn't bump the other persons car, or that no one got hurt. I should just feel lucky to be in a position in life to be driving such a great vehicle in the first place. In the end, it's a 4Runner and bumps and bruises like that will only give it more character.

Someone mentioned that the replacement pieces don't come painted, so even if I replaced the fender myself I'd have to paint it. I don't have any experience in painting things, and if I tried I'd probably make it look worse in the end. I think I'll simply contact my Toyota dealer and have them work with whatever body shop they want to get it fixed.

I hope it doesn't take them too long to fix. Maybe a week?
 
Am I the only one seeing the rear quarter panel bashed, bent in?

You won't get the flare to fit unless you go paintless on that shit and pop it out.

I'd get paintless to straighten that out then get a new clip and plastic fender.
 
Should only take a day or 2 once the body shop has the parts in hand. Go directly to a body shop and not through the dealer. Look them up online and check reviews and have them do it all from ordering the part to paint and install. Then you only have one place to go if something is wrong.

I smashed my front bumper up, it cost 600 bucks to install a new PAINTED bumper, and more time for the paint to dry than the install.

They also popped a dent out of the front quarter panel.

first off, you live and you learn. and this looks like a good learning experience. plus now when you get other scratches, dings, maybe even some redneck pinstriping you won't feel so bad.

secondly, find your own reputable body shop, the dealer is likely just going to overcharge you to be the middle man and contract out the work for cheap to make maximum profit. before the griping starts, yes, not all dealers are like that, but i am speaking from experience and what i have read on here. find a good shop that comes highly recommended and get them to do the work and they will stand behind it.

Everyone knows that the Limited version is almost like a car... Almost a soccer mom mobile according to some.

I'll keep mine though.

To OP, just take it to a decent body shop and pay cash to get it fixed, you'll get better pricing over insurance and should be relatively fast for that minor damage.
