I just got my 1998 from a tow yard lien sale for $1,500 and as I got deeper & deeper into it I found the source of the dirt ; the vent thing on the drivers side. The sunroof drain goes into it but it looks like it should have some foam or something to keep dirt out. The compartment had 4" of dirt in it, so much I just used my hand to scoop it out before I used the shop vac. The fine dust is deep inside every body panel, door pillar, and dust comes out of the headliner when you slam the door. I have totally gutted the interior at this point and hosed it out, am washing the carpets, headliner, etc. and sound/insulating everything before I put it back.
What is this filter looking thing for on the drivers rear panel ?

You are missing the outer cover. PM me and maybe we can work out a deal. I am dismantling my 99 4runner and just looked outside. I think I have the parts you need.

Is this to vent the gas filler if it leaks or what is its purpose ?
Not sure if I am going to do away with it or not.

There is supposed to be a 1-way flap door on that vent (all recent vehicles have something similar). My truck was that way when I got it too...
You can still get the part new from Toyota.

Let's air out the back of the vehicle when the HVAC system is set to outside air and makes it easier for the doors to close. The one-way valve is so that the air from the back of the car doesn't come back into the car if the front windows are cracked, etc.

Thanks for the answer ! The only car I've seen that was hard to close the door with the windows shut was an old VW Bug. I swear those things would float.
how do you remove the back plastic panels completely from the truck with out having to cut it? I have been looking at mine trying to figure it out. I am going to gut my entire 4runner and most likely put newer seats in the front and re upholster the rear seats but keep the headliner, panels and carpet out and just dynamat some of the smoother flat surfaces this summer.

Mine was missing the flap as well. I just cut up an old tile sponge to fit the hole. It does a great job of keeping the dirt out. It doesn't do that well against water though. lol

What exactly was supposed to be in that compartment from the factory?? My sons has straps in there but nothing is in it..

It all comes right out. You need to have the back seats out first to make it easy (and you can see a bit of the dirt build-up I had in there before cleaning).
Nothing was in there from the factory on US/Canadian 4Runners.

In Brazil, the legally required warning triangle was strapped in that rack thingy in my '97 SW4 (Brazil market 4Runner). I guess you only get the triangle in countries that require it. Brazil also gets you a fire extinguisher under the front of the driver's seat and a first-aid kit in the glove box.

I'm looking for a vent like that for a mod I'm doing to my first-gen (move the vent to the back). May I know dimensions, especially that of the opening where it inserts?

did you have to take the seatbelts off the I guess its the C pillar?
